Best practices and common pitfalls to avoid

Quality matters tremendously when selecting compost for top dressing. Choose compost that has been hot-composted, reaching temperatures above 140 degrees Fahrenheit during processing. This heat kills weed seeds and pathogens that could otherwise introduce problems to your lawn. If you’re purchasing commercial compost or using municipal compost, this should be guaranteed. If using homemade compost, make sure it’s fully decomposed and has been properly managed.

Avoid using builder’s sand or beach sand, which can have the wrong particle size or salt content. Horticultural sand or coarse sand is what you want if creating your own mix. Similarly, topsoil quality varies enormously-some products labeled as topsoil contain significant amounts of rocks, sticks, or even weed seeds.
