Whether you have a single echeveria on your windowsill or an entire shelf of cacti, there comes a point when you want more. The good news is that cacti and succulents are among the easiest plant groups to propagate. Their fleshy tissues store water and nutrients, giving newly separated plants a built-in survival kit during the critical establishment phase. From sowing tiny seeds to snipping stems and even surgically joining two different species together, propagation opens up a world of possibilities for expanding your collection – often at zero cost.

Sexual propagation: growing from seeds
Seed propagation is the only method that combines genetic material from two parent plants, producing offspring with unique characteristics. It is also the primary way solitary-growing cacti – species that do not produce offsets or branch readily – are multiplied. While it demands patience (some cacti take years to reach mature size), raising a plant from seed to flower is one of the most rewarding experiences in gardening.
Collecting and preparing seeds
Seeds develop inside fruits that form after successful pollination. The fruits should be fully ripe before harvesting – colour change and slight softening are common signs of readiness. In prickly pears, for instance, ripe fruits turn deep red or purple. Once collected, seeds need to be cleaned of any surrounding pulp, since organic residue encourages fungal growth. A gentle rinse in clean water followed by drying on paper towels for a few days is usually sufficient.
Before sowing, it helps to soak seeds in warm water for about 30 minutes to soften the seed coat and improve germination. Species with very tough coats, such as Opuntia, may need several days of soaking.
Sowing and germination
Use a fine, free-draining growing medium. A popular mix is equal parts seed-starting compost, perlite (or coarse grit), and horticultural sand. Fill small pots or trays, moisten the medium thoroughly, and sprinkle the seeds across the surface. Most cactus seeds should not be pressed deep into the soil – a very light covering of fine grit or vermiculite is enough.
The bag method (also called the baggie method) is widely favoured by growers. After sowing, the pot is sealed inside a clear plastic bag to create a mini greenhouse that traps heat and moisture. This maintains the high humidity (around 60-70 %) that seeds need for germination. Place the sealed pots in bright, indirect light at a temperature of roughly 21-27 ยฐC (70-80 ยฐF). Faster species like Astrophytum and Mammillaria may sprout within 5-10 days, while slower growers can take weeks or even months.
Once seedlings appear, gradually open the bag over several days to acclimatise them to lower humidity. Seedlings need more frequent watering than adult plants – light misting every few days works well. Reduce watering gradually as the plants grow. It is best to use distilled or unchlorinated water, because chlorine can damage tender young roots.
When to sow
Late winter through early summer is the ideal sowing window in most climates, since longer days and warmer temperatures naturally support germination. If you have grow lights and a heat mat, seeds can be started any time of year. During their first winter, keep seedlings indoors at a minimum of about 15 ยฐC (60 ยฐF) and do not let the soil dry out completely – young plants are not yet tough enough for the cold, dry dormancy that adults handle with ease.
Asexual propagation: cloning your plants
Asexual methods produce genetic copies of the parent plant, preserving every desirable trait – flower colour, growth pattern, variegation – exactly. They are generally faster and more reliable than seed propagation, which is why they are the go-to approach for most home gardeners and commercial growers alike.
Stem cuttings
Stem cutting is the quickest way to get a good-sized new plant. It works well for any cactus or succulent that has an elongated, actively growing stem – columnar cacti, branching species like jade plants, trailing types such as string-of-pearls, and pad-forming cacti like Opuntia.
How to take a stem cutting
Use a sharp, sterilised knife or pruning shears. Cut a healthy stem section of about 7-10 cm (3-4 inches). For pad-type cacti, remove an entire pad at the joint. Wear thick gloves or use barbecue tongs when handling spiny cacti.
Remove any lower leaves so that a clean section of bare stem can be inserted into the growing medium later. Now comes the step that sets succulent propagation apart from most other houseplants: let the cutting callus. Place it in a warm, dry spot with indirect light and allow the cut surface to dry and form a hard, protective seal. This can take anywhere from a few days for small succulent cuttings to 8-12 weeks for thick cactus stems, depending on the species and season.
Once the callus has formed, insert the cutting into a pot filled with well-drained cactus mix – a blend of one part potting soil and one part perlite or coarse sand works well. Water sparingly, just enough to keep the medium slightly moist, and place the pot in bright, indirect light. Roots typically develop within a few weeks to a month.
Leaf cuttings
Many succulents with thick, fleshy leaves – such as Echeveria, Crassula (jade), Kalanchoe, and Sedum – can grow entirely new plants from a single detached leaf. This method produces many plants at once, though the resulting plantlets are smaller and take longer to reach mature size compared to stem cuttings.
How to propagate from leaves
Gently twist a healthy leaf from the stem, making sure the base of the leaf comes away cleanly – a torn leaf with a damaged base is unlikely to root. Lay the leaves on newspaper or a dry surface in a warm area with indirect light and allow the base to form a callus, which typically takes 2-7 days.
Once calloused, place the leaf callus-side down on (or slightly into) moist cactus soil. Keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy. Over the coming weeks, tiny roots will emerge from the base, followed by a miniature plantlet. When the plantlet has developed several of its own leaves and a visible root system, it can be potted up individually.
Note that leaf propagation does not work for most cacti – their leaves are either absent or reduced to spines. It is primarily a succulent technique. Also, variegated plants propagated from leaves may sometimes revert to plain green colouring.
Division (offsets and pups)
Many cacti and succulents naturally reproduce by sending out offsets – small plantlets, also called pups, that grow at the base of or alongside the parent plant. Species well known for prolific offset production include Aloe, Haworthia, Agave, Echeveria, Sempervivum (hens and chicks), and among cacti, Echinopsis, Mammillaria, and Rebutia. The succulent houseplant Kalanchoe daigremontiana (Mother of Thousands) takes it a step further, producing tiny plantlets along the edges of its leaves that detach and root on their own.
How to divide offsets
Wait until the offset is large enough to handle – ideally it should be at least one-third the size of the parent. Many offsets will already have some roots of their own. Using a sterilised knife or your fingers, carefully separate the pup from the parent plant. If a clean cut is needed, allow the wound to callus for a few days before planting, just as you would with a cutting.
Plant the offset in its own pot with well-drained cactus mix. Water lightly and place in bright, indirect light. Because offsets often come with established roots, they tend to settle in faster than cuttings or seedlings, making division one of the easiest and most reliable propagation methods.
Grafting
Grafting is the most advanced propagation technique, involving the surgical joining of two different plants so they grow as one. The lower plant, which keeps its root system, is called the rootstock. The upper plant, which is attached to the rootstock, is the scion. If you have ever seen a bright red or yellow ball cactus perched on a green column in a garden centre, you have seen a grafted cactus – those colourful Gymnocalycium mihanovichii mutants lack enough chlorophyll to survive on their own roots and depend entirely on the rootstock for nutrients.
Why graft?
Grafting serves several practical purposes. It can save a plant suffering from root rot by moving the healthy top onto a new root system. It speeds up the growth of very slow-growing or rare species by pairing them with a vigorous rootstock. It also allows growers to cultivate plants that cannot photosynthesize sufficiently to sustain themselves. And for ornamental purposes, grafting creates eye-catching combinations of contrasting colours and forms.
Choosing rootstock and scion
For a graft to succeed, the rootstock and scion should belong to the same plant family – and the closer the relationship, the better the compatibility. Commonly used rootstocks for cacti include Hylocereus (dragon fruit), Trichocereus (now Echinopsis), Harrisia, and Pereskiopsis. For succulents, Crassula (jade plant) is sometimes used as rootstock for Echeveria scions. Both plants should be healthy and actively growing – the spring-through-autumn growing season gives the best results.
How to perform a flat graft
The flat graft is the simplest and most common technique for cacti. Here is a step-by-step overview:
1. Prepare your tools. You need a very sharp, sterilised knife or razor blade, rubbing alcohol for sterilisation, rubber bands or grafting tape, and gloves.
2. Cut the rootstock. Make a clean horizontal cut across the rootstock a few centimetres above the soil line. Slightly bevel (chamfer) the edges of the cut to prevent the edges from drying inward.
3. Cut the scion. Slice the base of the scion plant flat. Try to match the diameter of the scion as closely as possible to the rootstock.
4. Join the two plants. Look at the freshly cut surfaces – you will see a ring or cluster of small dots in the centre. This is the vascular cambium, the tissue responsible for transporting water and nutrients. Align the cambium rings of the scion and rootstock so that they overlap. Press the scion gently onto the rootstock to remove any trapped air.
5. Secure the graft. Wrap rubber bands from the top of the scion, down and around the bottom of the pot, to hold steady pressure. Alternatively, use grafting clips or tape.
6. Aftercare. Keep the grafted plant in a shaded spot for about a week to prevent the cut surfaces from drying too quickly. Avoid watering directly on the graft union. After 7-14 days, gently test whether the scion feels attached. If it holds firm, the graft has taken and you can remove the rubber bands and gradually move the plant back into normal light conditions.
Other grafting techniques include the cleft (V) graft, where a wedge-shaped scion is inserted into a V-cut on the rootstock, and the side graft, where an angled incision on the side of the rootstock receives the scion. These offer greater surface contact but require more precise cutting and are better suited to experienced growers.
Choosing the right propagation method
The best method depends on the species you are working with and your goals. Here is a quick reference:
Seed propagation – best for solitary cacti that do not offset, for creating genetic diversity, and for rare species that are difficult to source as cuttings. Requires the most patience.
Stem cuttings – ideal for branching and columnar cacti, trailing succulents, and any species with an elongated stem. Fast results and high success rate.
Leaf cuttings – perfect for rosette-forming succulents like Echeveria, Sedum, and Crassula. Produces many plants from a single parent but takes time to reach mature size.
Division / offsets – the easiest method whenever offsets are available. Works for Aloe, Haworthia, Agave, Sempervivum, Mammillaria, and many more.
Grafting – used for chlorophyll-deficient mutants, slow-growing rarities, or to rescue a plant from disease. Requires practice and compatible plant pairings.
Essential tips for propagation success
Regardless of which method you choose, a few universal principles greatly improve your chances:
Use well-draining soil. A mix of one part potting soil to one part perlite or coarse sand prevents waterlogging, which is the number-one killer of new propagations. Pre-mixed cactus and succulent potting mixes are readily available, or you can blend your own.
Sterilise your tools. A quick wipe with rubbing alcohol between cuts prevents the spread of bacteria and fungi. This is especially critical during grafting.
Always let cuts callus. Placing a freshly cut succulent or cactus directly into moist soil is an invitation for rot. Allowing the wound to dry and seal is the single most important difference between succulent propagation and propagating other houseplants.
Provide bright, indirect light. Direct sun can scorch delicate cuttings and seedlings. A spot near a bright window with a sheer curtain, or under grow lights set 15-30 cm above the plants, is ideal.
Be patient. Cacti and succulents operate on their own timeline. Seeds may take days to months to germinate. Cuttings may sit for weeks before showing any root growth. Resist the urge to overwater or constantly disturb them – gentle observation is better than frequent intervention.
Time it right. Spring and early summer, when plants are actively growing, is the optimal season for every propagation method. Grafting during the dormant winter months has a much lower success rate.
