Akadama is a hard-baked Japanese clay that excels at water retention while still allowing drainage. After about two years, akadama begins to break down, which means you’ll need to either repot your tree or use akadama in a mix with more stable components. Lava rock provides structure and helps with both water retention and drainage. Its rough, jagged surface encourages the development of fine feeder roots-the tiny root hairs that absorb nutrients and water most efficiently.

Customizing your mix

The exact ratio of these components varies depending on your tree species. For deciduous bonsai trees, use 50% akadama, 25% pumice, and 25% lava rock. For conifers and pines, a more balanced mixture of 33% each component works better.

Your local climate and watering habits should also influence your mix. If you live in a humid area or can’t check your trees multiple times daily, increase the akadama content for better water retention. In wet climates, add more lava rock to improve drainage. The ideal bonsai soil should be pH neutral, with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5.

Some growers add a small amount of organic material like pine bark or fine gravel to their mixes. While organic components can provide nutrients and improve water retention, they break down over time and may reduce drainage as they decompose. If you choose to include organic matter, pine bark is generally the best option because it decomposes more slowly than other materials.

The plant: Selecting species that thrive in miniature

Not all plants are created equal when it comes to bonsai cultivation. While the art form’s name literally translates to “tree in a pot,” certain species adapt to miniaturization far better than others.

Characteristics of ideal bonsai species

The best plants for bonsai share several key traits. They should naturally produce small leaves or needles that remain proportional to the tree’s miniature size. Species with large leaves can look out of scale no matter how skillfully you train them.

The ability to produce new buds on old wood is crucial because it allows for continual pruning and regeneration. Without this characteristic, your styling options become severely limited. The plant should also tolerate root disturbance well, since bonsai require regular repotting to maintain their health and size. Species that struggle with root pruning will likely fail to thrive in a bonsai pot.

Junipers are among the most popular choices for both beginners and experts. Their dense foliage, flexibility for shaping, and hardy nature make them ideal for learning the basics of bonsai care. They thrive in bright, indirect light and adapt to various styling approaches.

Ficus species, particularly Ficus retusa and Ficus microcarpa, excel as indoor bonsai. These resilient trees tolerate the lower light and humidity of typical homes better than most species. Their thick trunks and potential for aerial roots add dramatic visual interest to your compositions.

Chinese elms are wonderfully forgiving for beginners. They have small, glossy leaves, natural pest resistance, and adapt well to both indoor and outdoor environments. Their flexibility allows for different bonsai styles, from formal upright to cascade.

Pines represent the quintessential bonsai aesthetic with their rugged bark and needle clusters. Species like Japanese Black Pine, Mountain Pine, and Japanese White Pine are particularly suitable for bonsai. However, they require more care and experience than many other species, making them better suited for intermediate to advanced growers.

Matching plant to environment

It’s crucial to understand that most bonsai are outdoor trees that require seasonal temperature changes and dormancy periods.
