Lilium, commonly known as lilies, is one of the most commercially important genera in the global cut flower industry. Belonging to the family Liliaceae, the genus comprises around 80 species of herbaceous perennial plants that grow from scaly bulbs and produce striking six-petaled flowers. Whether you’re growing them for the garden, for cut flower arrangements, or for potted plant sales, understanding the right varieties, growing conditions, and harvesting practices is essential for success in lily cultivation.

Botanical overview of Lilium

Lilies are tall perennials that can range from 30 cm to 180 cm in height depending on the variety. They grow from naked, tunicless scaly underground bulbs that serve as their organs of perennation. The flowers are large, often fragrant, and come in a wide spectrum of colours – whites, yellows, oranges, pinks, reds, and purples. Most species are native to the Northern Hemisphere, spanning temperate regions across Asia, Europe, and North America.

Lily flowers can be upward-facing, outward-facing, or pendant (downward-facing), and their shapes range from trumpet and funnel forms to the recurved “Turk’s cap” style. The fruit is a three-celled capsule, and seeds ripen in late summer. One important thing to note: many plants carry “lily” in their common names (such as daylily, water lily, or calla lily), but true lilies belong only to the genus Lilium.

Major groups and varieties of Lilium

Commercial lily production revolves around several hybrid groups, each with its own set of characteristics suited to different markets. Here’s a look at the most important ones.

Asiatic hybrids

Asiatic hybrids are derived from crosses among species in the Sinomartagon section, including Lilium bulbiferum, L. lancifolium, L. dauricum, and others. They produce medium-sized, upward or outward-facing flowers that are mostly unscented. Asiatic lilies bloom early in the season and are known for their wide colour range – from vibrant oranges and yellows to deep reds and purples. Popular cultivars include ‘Tresor’, ‘Navona’, ‘Landini’, and ‘Strong Gold’. These are relatively easy to grow and are more cold-hardy compared to Oriental types.

Oriental hybrids

Oriental hybrids are based on species from the Archelirion section, particularly Lilium auratum and Lilium speciosum. These produce large, intensely fragrant flowers that tend to be outward-facing. Popular cultivars include ‘Stargazer’, ‘Sorbonne’, ‘Siberia’, and ‘Casa Blanca’. Oriental lilies prefer acidic soil and partial shade in warmer climates. They are highly valued in the cut flower industry for their impressive size and long vase life, but they require more specific growing conditions than Asiatic varieties.

Easter lilies (Lilium longiflorum)

Easter lilies are characterised by their pure white, trumpet-shaped flowers. Native to the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan, they are among the most famous trumpet-flowered lilies in the world. A key advantage of Easter lilies is that they can be forced to bloom at specific times through temperature manipulation, making them essential for the holiday flower market. Nearly all commercial Easter lily bulbs sold in North America are now produced along the coastal regions of northwestern California and southwestern Oregon.

LA, LO, OT, and other interspecific hybrids

Modern breeding has produced several important interspecific hybrid groups. LA hybrids (a cross between L. longiflorum and Asiatic lilies) are increasingly popular because they offer larger flowers, strong stems, and less intense fragrance than Orientals. OT hybrids (Oriental ร— Trumpet crosses) combine the fragrance of Orientals with the sturdiness of Trumpet lilies. LO hybrids (L. longiflorum ร— Oriental) provide unique flower shapes and colours. According to the University of Maryland Extension, LA hybrids have largely replaced Asiatic lilies in the commercial cut flower market. Newer TA hybrids (Trumpet ร— Asiatic) are also emerging, offering deeper pigment colours.

Climatic requirements and growing conditions

Lilies thrive in temperate climates with distinct seasons. They need a period of cold dormancy (vernalisation) to bloom successfully. In India, cooler hill regions such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and parts of the Northeast are naturally suited for lily cultivation. However, with the rise of protected cultivation (polyhouses and greenhouses), lilies are now grown commercially even in non-traditional areas.

Temperature

Temperature management is critical throughout the crop cycle. For Asiatic and LA hybrids, recommended night temperatures are 10-13ยฐC (50-55ยฐF) with daytime temperatures of 17-18ยฐC (62-65ยฐF). Oriental, OT, and LO hybrids prefer slightly warmer conditions – night temperatures of 14-17ยฐC (58-62ยฐF) and day temperatures of 18-20ยฐC (65-68ยฐF). Commercial greenhouse cultivation typically maintains night temperatures between 10 and 17ยฐC and day temperatures between 16 and 21ยฐC.

Soil requirements

Lilies demand well-drained, porous, loamy soil. Waterlogging is one of the quickest ways to kill lily bulbs, as it leads to root rot. A soil pH of around 6.0 to 6.5 is generally considered ideal – slightly acidic. Before planting, the soil should be amended with organic matter such as compost, well-rotted manure, or finely ground bark to improve both drainage and nutrient content. For light soils like sandy and sandy loams, planting in ridges or on 1-metre-wide raised beds is recommended. In high-rainfall areas, raised beds help prevent waterlogging.

Light

Lilium is a facultative long-day plant, meaning it can grow under various light conditions but requires long days for optimal flowering. In commercial greenhouse settings, supplemental lighting is often used during winter months to promote stem elongation and timely blooming. Recent research also shows that combining blue and red LED light treatments can enhance plant height, bud development, and even vase life.

Planting methods and field preparation

Lily bulbs are planted during the dormant season. In the north Indian plains, October through November is the ideal window for planting Asiatic lilies, while March to April works better in the hills. For Oriental types, planting is generally done between mid-September and mid-December.

Bulbs are measured by circumference – and size matters. Larger bulbs produce stronger stems and more flowers. Selecting undersized bulbs often results in weak stems or no flowering at all. Bulbs are usually pre-cooled by suppliers for 6 to 8 weeks at 1-2ยฐC (34-36ยฐF) before being shipped for planting. They should be planted at a depth of approximately 2.5 times the bulb height, with the pointed end facing upward.

Spacing depends on the hybrid group and intended market. Planting can be done in raised beds, flat beds, or ridges depending on soil type and climate. It’s important to water the field a few days before planting so that the soil has adequate moisture when bulbs go in.

Irrigation and nutrient management

During active growth, lilies need consistent moisture but not waterlogged soil. The general approach is to water deeply but infrequently, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between irrigations. This encourages deep root development. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses are ideal because they deliver water directly to the root zone while keeping foliage dry. Overhead watering should be avoided, especially during flowering, as wet petals promote diseases like botrytis (grey mould).

Applying 2-3 inches of organic mulch (shredded bark, straw, or compost) around the plants helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. However, mulch should not be placed directly against the stems to avoid pest and disease issues.

For nutrition, a high-potassium fertiliser applied every couple of weeks from planting until about six weeks after flowering supports strong bloom development. Potassium is especially critical for lily plants, as it plays a key role in osmotic regulation and phloem transport, promoting both bulb growth and flower quality.

Propagation methods in Lilium

Lilies can be multiplied through several vegetative methods. Since sexual reproduction in lilies has significant limitations – including extended juvenile phases of 3-5 years and genetic variability in seed-derived plants – commercial propagation relies almost entirely on asexual methods.

Scale propagation

This is the most widely used commercial method. Individual scales are gently detached from the mother bulb and placed in slightly damp peat moss or vermiculite in sealed plastic bags. Stored at around 21ยฐC (70ยฐF) for a few weeks, small bulblets develop at the base of each scale. These bulblets can then be chilled for 6-12 weeks and planted in nursery beds. Scale propagation gives the largest quantity of new plants among all vegetative methods and maintains genetic stability.

Stem bulblets and bulbils

Many lily species produce small bulblets along the underground portion of their stem. These can be detached in autumn and transplanted into nursery beds. Some species, like Lilium lancifolium (tiger lily), also produce aerial bulbils – small bead-like structures that form in the leaf axils on the stem. When ripe, these bulbils can be collected and planted like seeds, producing flowering-sized bulbs within one to two years.

Tissue culture (micropropagation)

For large-scale, disease-free production, tissue culture is the preferred method. Bulb scale explants are cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with appropriate plant growth regulators such as BAP and NAA. The process involves inducing shoot buds from scales, multiplying them through subcultures, and then promoting bulblet formation using high sucrose concentrations in the medium.

Research published in Discover Plants demonstrated that optimised tissue culture protocols can achieve up to 93% shoot bud initiation and 100% survival rates during hardening. Tissue culture produces genetically identical, virus-free plants and can generate thousands of plantlets from a single bulb, significantly shortening the production timeline compared to conventional propagation.

Pest and disease management

Lilies are susceptible to several pests and diseases that can significantly reduce yield and quality if left unchecked.

Major pests

Aphids are one of the most common pests, both causing direct feeding damage and serving as vectors for viral diseases. The scarlet lily beetle (Lilioceris lilii) is another major threat – its larvae can cause severe damage to stems and leaves. The beetle lays its eggs and completes its life cycle exclusively on true lilies and fritillaries. Other pests include leatherjackets (which feed on roots) and various caterpillars.

Major diseases

Botrytis (grey mould) is perhaps the most common fungal disease affecting lilies, particularly in humid conditions or when overhead irrigation is used. Viral diseases – spread primarily by aphids – cause mottling, streaking, and distortion of leaves and flowers, leading to gradual decline of the plant. Fusarium basal rot attacks the bulb itself and can wipe out entire batches. Good sanitation, proper spacing for air circulation, use of disease-free planting material (from tissue culture), and appropriate fungicide applications form the basis of an integrated disease management strategy.

Harvesting lilies

The timing of harvest has a direct impact on the quality and longevity of cut lily flowers. For commercial cut flower production, lilies should be harvested when the first, lowermost bud shows full colour but has not yet opened. Harvesting too early can result in buds that fail to open or open incompletely, while harvesting too late leads to shorter vase life and increased risk of damage during transport.

The best time to cut is early in the morning or when temperatures are below 27ยฐC (80ยฐF), as handling flowers in high heat can cause bruising. Use sharp, clean pruning shears and make a clean angled cut. The flower stalk should be clipped about 8-10 cm above ground level so that the remaining foliage continues to nourish the bulb for future seasons. After 90 to 120 days from planting, flowers are typically ready for harvest.

Place cut stems immediately in clean water – plastic buckets are preferred over galvanized ones, which can leave residues that clog stems. Remove anthers from open blooms to prevent pollen from staining the petals or surrounding surfaces.

Post-harvest handling and vase life

Proper post-harvest care is what separates a mediocre lily crop from a premium one. Freshly harvested lilies typically have a vase life of 9 to 14 days, depending on cultivar and handling conditions. Asiatic types generally last 7-14 days, while Orientals can persist for 10-15 days.

Key post-harvest steps

After cutting, stems should be placed in water in a cooler at 2-5ยฐC (35-41ยฐF) within 30 minutes. Remove the bottom one-third of the foliage and grade stems by length or number of flowers. For transport, keeping stems in water significantly prolongs quality. Adding a floral preservative containing a biocide and sucrose to vase water can improve bud opening and extend freshness.

However, extended cold storage can be problematic. Research from the University of Massachusetts shows that storing cut lilies at low temperatures for more than one week can significantly increase bud abortion, reduce flower size, and accelerate leaf yellowing – the most common post-harvest issue in lilies. Spraying leaves with a solution of BA (benzyladenine) and GA (gibberellic acid) can help prevent yellowing. Ethylene exposure is another concern, as it can cause premature bud opening and bud blasting in certain cultivars.

Tips for extending vase life

Re-cut stems at an angle every two days to maintain water uptake. Change vase water daily and keep arrangements away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Removing basal leaves that would be submerged in water prevents bacterial growth and xylem plugging.

Commercial significance of Lilium

Lilium ranks among the top ten cut flower varieties in the global floriculture sector. It holds the fourth position in international flower trade, and its commercial importance continues to grow. The global cut flower market was estimated at approximately USD 39 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach around USD 52 billion by 2030. Most commercial bulb production is concentrated in the Netherlands, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa, France, and the Pacific Northwest of the United States. In India, protected cultivation is opening up new opportunities for lily production in non-traditional growing regions.

The continued development of new hybrid groups – especially LA, OT, and double-flowered Oriental types like the RoseLilyยฎ series (which are pollen-free) – is broadening market appeal and giving growers fresh options for differentiation.
