With their glossy, heart-shaped spathes and long-lasting blooms, they have become a staple in cut-flower markets and potted-plant production across the globe. What are anthuriums?
Anthurium is the largest genus in the Araceae (arum) family, containing roughly 1,000 species of flowering plants. The name comes from the Greek words anthos (flower) and oura (tail), a reference to the distinctive tail-like spadix. These plants are native to tropical regions of Central and South America – from Mexico down to northern Argentina, including parts of the Caribbean.
Anthuriums grow in a variety of forms. Some are epiphytes (growing on other plants), some are terrestrial, and others are climbing hemi-epiphytes. What most people call the “flower” is actually a colourful spathe – a modified leaf – surrounding the true flowers, which are tiny and arranged along the spadix. In the global cut-flower market, anthuriums rank as the second most traded tropical flower after orchids.
Important species and commercial varieties
While there are hundreds of anthurium species, only a handful are widely grown for commercial purposes. Here are the key ones:
Anthurium andraeanum
This is the most commercially important species, originally from Colombia and Ecuador. It produces the large, showy, heart-shaped spathes that most people associate with anthuriums. Through extensive breeding, cultivars are now available in red, pink, orange, white, green, purple, and bicolour patterns. Popular cultivars include ‘Tropical’ (vibrant red), ‘Princess Alexia’ (bright pink with yellow spadix), and ‘White Heart’ (pure white, popular for events).
Anthurium scherzerianum
Known as the pigtail anthurium, this species has a characteristically curled spadix and somewhat smaller spathes than A. andraeanum. Together with A. andraeanum, it is one of only two species that produce bright red spathes, and both have been heavily bred for colour variation.
Anthurium crystallinum
Prized not for its flowers but for its large, velvety, dark green leaves with striking silvery-white veins, this species is a popular foliage ornamental.
Potted hybrids
Modern breeding has produced compact interspecific hybrids – crosses between A. andraeanum and dwarf species such as A. amnicola and A. antioquiense. Varieties like ‘Red Hot’, ‘Orange Hot’, ‘Lady Jane’, and ‘Southern Blush’ have been released through programmes at the University of Florida and in the Netherlands. These compact cultivars are ideal for potted-plant production and indoor display.
Ideal growing conditions
Anthuriums are tropical plants and perform best under warm, humid, and partially shaded conditions. Getting the environment right is critical for both healthy growth and quality flower production.
Temperature
The optimum daytime temperature range is 24-30ยฐC, while nighttime temperatures should stay between 15-22ยฐC. Temperatures below 15ยฐC can cause chilling injury (purpling of spathes, browning of spadix), and temperatures above 35ยฐC lead to heat stress and scorching. In commercial greenhouses, ventilation and airflow are managed to keep temperatures within this range.
Light
Anthuriums require bright but indirect light. Direct sunlight scorches leaves and damages flower buds, while too little light reduces flowering and causes weak, elongated growth. In tropical regions, providing 75-80% shade is standard practice. Commercial greenhouses typically use a combination of fixed shade nets (around 50-60%) and movable nets (25%) to adjust light levels seasonally. The ideal light intensity falls in the 20,000-25,000 lux range.
Humidity
A relative humidity of 60-80% is recommended for anthurium cultivation. In greenhouse setups, foggers are commonly installed to maintain adequate moisture levels in the air. Low humidity leads to browning of leaf edges and poor spathe quality.
Growing medium
Anthuriums need a well-aerated, organic-rich medium with excellent drainage and good water-holding capacity. The roots are naturally exposed in their epiphytic habitat, so the substrate must never become waterlogged. Common media mixes include:
Peat, perlite, and bark in a 1:1:1 ratio – widely used in Florida and the Netherlands. A combination of coconut husk and coco peat – the primary medium used for commercial cultivation in India. Other amendments such as brick pieces, charcoal, leaf mould, and volcanic cinder are also employed. The substrate pH should ideally be between 5.5 and 6.5, and soluble salts should stay between 1 and 2 dS/m.
When coconut husk is used, it should be thoroughly washed and treated with a recommended fungicide (e.g., carbendazim at 1 g/litre) and insecticide (e.g., chlorpyrifos at 1.5 ml/litre) before bed preparation. The growing medium is typically maintained at a depth of 20-30 cm and replaced every two to three years.
Planting and cultural practices
In commercial greenhouse production, longitudinal beds of 0.9-1.1 m width are prepared, with a maximum bed length of 30 m. A spacing of 30 cm ร 25 cm is maintained between plants. Small planting holes of about 5-6 cm depth and width are made at each spot. Plants should be inserted carefully so that the roots do not touch the ground directly – a handful of coir pith below the base helps prevent direct contact.
A few important cultural practices to follow:
Irrigation: Sprinkler or drip irrigation is used. Water quality matters – electrical conductivity of irrigation water should be around 0.5 dS/m. Water above 1.0 EC is generally unsuitable. Fertilisation: A balanced N:P:K fertiliser at a ratio of 20:20:20 is applied through fertigation during the vegetative stage. During flowering, the ratio can shift to 6:14:7 or 20:30:20 to promote bloom production. Weed management: Chemical weedicides are avoided because many are phytotoxic to anthuriums. Manual weeding is the standard practice. Leaf maintenance: Only 3-5 healthy leaves should be retained per plant for good quality flower production. Old and diseased leaves should be regularly pruned. Plant support: Some anthurium varieties with slender stems may need to be tied to a thin stake or split bamboo for support. As roots emerge above the substrate surface over time, additional coconut husk should be added to cover them.
Propagation techniques
There are several ways to propagate anthuriums, each suited to different scales of production.
Tissue culture (micropropagation)
This is the dominant commercial propagation method. Nearly all modern cultivars are propagated through tissue culture, which ensures disease-free, genetically uniform planting stock. Tissue-cultured plantlets are grown in medium-filled multi-cavity plastic liner trays. This method is essential for large-scale production because it reduces the risk of transmitting bacterial blight and other systemic infections.
Division
Division is the simplest method for home growers. The plant is carefully removed from its pot, and the root clump is separated into smaller sections. Each division should have at least one healthy stem and a functioning root system. The divisions are potted individually with fresh growing medium and watered thoroughly.
Stem cuttings
A healthy stem with at least two nodes is selected and cut just below a node. The cutting is planted in a moist, well-drained medium and kept in a warm, humid environment until roots develop.
Seed propagation
Seeds can be used to grow anthuriums, but this method is slow, produces variable offspring, and is mainly used in breeding programmes rather than commercial production.
Pest and disease management
Anthuriums are susceptible to several bacterial and fungal diseases, as well as common greenhouse pests. Effective management combines sanitation, cultural control, and targeted chemical treatments.
Bacterial blight
This is the most serious disease affecting anthuriums worldwide. It is caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. dieffenbachiae. The first symptoms are yellowed, water-soaked lesions along leaf margins that rapidly develop into V-shaped necrotic areas. The bacteria enter through hydathodes (leaf pores) or through wounds made during pruning and harvesting. Systemically infected plants eventually wilt and die.
Key management strategies include: using only certified tissue-cultured, pathogen-free planting material; practising strict field sanitation – removing and destroying infected leaves and plants immediately; sterilising all cutting tools with a quaternary ammonium disinfectant between plants; using drip irrigation instead of overhead sprinklers to keep foliage dry; increasing air circulation to lower humidity; and applying copper-based products (e.g., Kocide 3000), mancozeb, or biological agents like Bacillus subtilis (Cease).
Bacterial wilt
Caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, bacterial wilt leads to leaf yellowing, vascular browning, and rapid plant death. The pathogen survives in soil for years. Infected plants and their surrounding soil should be discarded completely, and tools must be sterilised between plants.
Root rots
Fungal pathogens like Rhizoctonia, Pythium, and Phytophthora cause root and stem rots, especially in waterlogged or poorly drained substrates. Ensuring proper drainage and avoiding overwatering are the primary preventive measures. Fungicides containing phosphorous acid or metalaxyl can be applied as needed.
Anthracnose
This fungal disease causes brown to black spots on leaves and spreads quickly under wet, humid conditions. Good air circulation, avoiding overhead watering, and prompt removal of affected foliage are essential. Fungicidal sprays can be used to manage outbreaks.
Common pests
Anthuriums are affected by pests such as aphids, thrips, mealybugs, mites, and nematodes. Aphids and thrips feed on young leaves and flowers, causing distortion and discolouration. Mealybugs are usually found in clusters on the undersides of leaves. Nematodes (particularly root-knot nematodes) cause stunted growth, yellowing, and characteristic root galls. Integrated pest management combining regular scouting, neem oil or insecticidal soap applications, and biological control agents offers the most sustainable approach.
Harvesting anthuriums
Anthurium plants typically begin flowering about 8 months after planting and produce an average of 6-8 flower stalks per plant per year. The best time to harvest is when one-third to two-thirds of the true flowers on the spadix are open. For maximum vase life, some Hawaiian growers prefer harvesting when about three-quarters of the spadix surface is rough (meaning those flowers are mature).
Flowers are cut in the morning using a sharp, clean knife, leaving about 3 cm of stem on the plant to prevent stem rot. Only flowers that are spotlessly clean, with glossy spathes and no blemishes, black spots, or deformities, are selected for market. After cutting, the base of the stalk is immediately placed in clean water to prevent drying.
Post-harvest technology
Proper post-harvest handling is critical because anthuriums are perishable, and their market value depends heavily on visual quality.
Conditioning and treatment
After harvest, stems should be re-cut and placed in clean water containing a biocide such as hypochlorite (at around 50 ppm) to prevent microbial growth. Flowers are often washed gently to remove dust and pesticide residues. Preservative solutions containing sucrose, citric acid, and 8-hydroxyquinoline sulphate (8-HQS) have been shown to significantly extend vase life. Treatments like pulsing with silver nitrate solution (1,000 ppm for 10-20 minutes) or dipping in carnauba wax emulsion can also improve longevity.
Grading
Flowers are graded by spathe size, stem length, colour uniformity, glossiness, and freedom from damage. In Caribbean and Hawaiian markets, anthuriums are typically sorted into five grades based on flower size.
Packaging and storage
Anthuriums are packed individually or in small groups using moist shredded paper or plastic sleeves to prevent the spadix of one flower from puncturing the spathe of another during transit. Unlike many temperate cut flowers, anthuriums are chilling-sensitive and must be stored above 10ยฐC, ideally at 12-15ยฐC with 90-95% relative humidity. When properly handled, anthuriums can maintain a vase life of up to three weeks.
Avoiding common post-harvest problems
Exposure to ethylene gas causes premature wilting and discolouration. Flowers should be kept away from ripening fruit and vehicle exhaust. Chilling injury, visible as spathe purpling and spadix browning, is another concern during cold-weather transport. Maintaining the cold chain at above 10ยฐC throughout shipping is essential.
Economic importance and scope
Globally, the Netherlands is one of the leading producers and exporters of anthuriums, both as cut flowers and potted plants. In the United States, Florida leads the nation in potted flowering anthurium production. Major importing countries include the USA, Canada, Germany, and Japan.
In India, commercial anthurium production is still developing, concentrated mainly in the Western Ghats (Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu) and the North-Eastern states. The crop has strong export potential due to its leafless stem and excellent vase life. With the adoption of greenhouse technology, fertigation systems, and quality planting material, anthurium cultivation offers a viable and profitable opportunity for Indian floriculturists.
