Crossandra, commonly known as the firecracker flower, is one of the most commercially important tropical flowering plants in India and parts of Africa. Belonging to the family Acanthaceae, this genus comprises around 54 species spread across Africa, Madagascar, Arabia, and the Indian subcontinent. Its bright, lightweight blooms – popular for garlands and hair adornment – make it a staple of South Indian floriculture. But not all Crossandra plants are the same. The genus offers a wide range of species and cultivated varieties, each with distinct flower colours, growth habits, and practical uses. Let’s explore them in detail.

The genus Crossandra: a brief botanical background

The name “Crossandra” comes from the Greek words krossos (fringe) and aner (male), referring to the fringed anthers of the plant. Though there are over 50 recognised species in the genus, only a handful are cultivated commercially – primarily C. infundibuliformis, C. undulaefolia, C. guineensis, C. mucronata, and C. subacaulis. Among these, C. infundibuliformis is by far the most widely grown for flower production. Its native range stretches from Ethiopia through East Africa to India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, and it thrives in seasonally dry tropical environments.

Crossandra plants are evergreen perennials or small shrubs with glossy, dark green leaves and dense terminal flower spikes. The flowers are funnel-shaped with overlapping asymmetrical petals, and they bloom almost continuously in warm weather. The common name “firecracker flower” comes from the seed pods, which burst open when exposed to high humidity or rain, scattering seeds around the parent plant.

Key Crossandra species in cultivation

While dozens of species exist in the wild, the following are the most relevant for horticulture and commercial floriculture.

Crossandra infundibuliformis

This is the most widely cultivated species and the foundation for most commercial varieties. Native to India and Sri Lanka, the plant typically grows 1 to 3 feet tall and produces distinctive orange to salmon-coloured flowers arranged in terminal spikes. The Latin name infundibuliformis means funnel-shaped, describing the flower form. It adapts well to both garden beds and containers, making it suitable for a wide range of growing conditions. The glossy, oval-shaped leaves can grow up to 5 inches long and provide an attractive backdrop for the vibrant blooms. In southern India, this species is known as Kanakambaram in Tamil and Telugu and Aboli in Marathi. Its flowers are frequently combined with jasmine for garlands and religious offerings.

Crossandra undulaefolia

Often considered a synonym or close relative of C. infundibuliformis, this species has historically been listed as the commercial flower-producing species in Indian horticulture texts. It shares most morphological features with C. infundibuliformis but was originally described with slightly different leaf characteristics – notably more undulate (wavy) leaf margins. In modern taxonomy, it is frequently treated as the same species.

Crossandra greenstockii

This species is characterised by a more compact growth habit and smaller, more delicate flowers compared to C. infundibuliformis. It typically grows to about 12-18 inches tall, making it well suited for front borders or container gardens where space is limited. The flowers are usually orange to coral in colour, and the plant has a neat, tidy appearance with a consistent blooming pattern.

Crossandra pungens

True to its name, C. pungens has a more rugged appearance with slightly thorny stems. It produces orange flowers in dense clusters and tends to have a more sprawling growth habit compared to other species. One advantage of this species is its greater drought tolerance once established, making it more suitable for drier garden conditions.

Crossandra flava

C. flava breaks the typical orange colour tradition of the genus by producing yellow blooms. It is relatively rare in cultivation but is highly valued by collectors for its distinctive flower colour. In growth habit, it is similar to C. infundibuliformis but slightly more compact. The bright yellow flowers stand out sharply against the dark foliage.

Crossandra guineensis

Originating from West Africa, this species has a more tropical appearance with larger leaves. It is less commonly available in the commercial market but holds interest for botanical gardens and plant breeders looking to introduce new traits into cultivated Crossandra lines.

Crossandra nilotica

C. nilotica is native to parts of Africa and represents the genus’s diversity across the continent. Like C. guineensis, it is not widely grown commercially but is important from a genetic and botanical perspective. It is adapted to different environmental conditions than the Indian species.

Major cultivated varieties and hybrids

Plant breeders – particularly in India – have developed several important cultivars from Crossandra infundibuliformis and related species. These varieties differ in ploidy level, flower colour, yield, and pest resistance. According to Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Crossandra cultivars are broadly classified into tetraploid types (2n=40) and triploid types (2n=30).

Orange Crossandra

This is the standard cultivar that most growers associate with the crop. It is a tetraploid (2n=40) that sets seeds profusely and breeds true, producing bright orange flowers. It is propagated through seeds, with a typical seed rate of 5 kg per hectare. The standard variety grows 18-36 inches tall and works well as a middle-border plant or focal point in mixed plantings. It yields an average of about 2,000 kg of flowers per hectare per year.

Delhi Crossandra

This is a triploid cultivar (2n=30) specifically bred for Indian conditions. It produces bright deep orange flowers that are considered more attractive than the standard orange type. Because it is triploid, Delhi Crossandra does not produce seeds and must be propagated through terminal stem cuttings of 10-15 cm length. It has a compact, bushy growth habit and exceptional heat tolerance, making it particularly suited for the intense summers of northern and central India. One of its standout advantages is a higher yield – about 2,800 kg of flowers per hectare per year, significantly more than the standard tetraploid types. Delhi Crossandra requires a different spacing pattern (60 ร— 40 cm) and its own specific fertilisation regime.

Lutea Yellow

This tetraploid variety offers a yellow to orange-yellow flower colour – a significant departure from the typical orange blooms. It maintains many desirable characteristics of the standard Crossandra while providing a completely different colour palette. The yellow flowers are striking against the dark green foliage, and the variety works well in hanging baskets and as a front line in shrubbery borders. It can be propagated through seeds like other tetraploid types.

Sebaculis Red

Another tetraploid cultivar, Sebaculis Red is known for being a hardy variety with a high degree of tolerance to nematodes – one of the most serious pests in Crossandra cultivation. Its reddish flower colour adds another dimension to the available colour palette. This nematode resistance makes it particularly valuable in fields where root-knot nematodes are a known problem.

Other notable cultivars and selections

Beyond the four principal Indian cultivars, several other varieties have been developed or selected for specific traits.

Florida Sunset

This cultivar is popular in the United States and produces mango-orange coloured flowers. It is well suited for warm climates (USDA zones 9-11) and performs well as both a landscape plant and a houseplant.

Orange Marmalade

Developed by Costa Farms, this cultivar features bright, pure orange flowers and glossy green foliage. It is marketed as a houseplant-friendly variety that may bloom year-round when grown indoors with sufficient light.

Mona Wallhead

A Swedish cultivar, Mona Wallhead is noted for its salmon-pink flowers, shiny black-green foliage, and a very compact growth habit. It typically grows 12-18 inches tall and has better cold tolerance than many other Crossandra selections, making it useful in slightly cooler climates.

Nile Queen

This variety rounds out the colour spectrum with distinctly reddish-orange blooms. It is less commonly found in the market but is appreciated by collectors and gardeners seeking unusual flower colours.

Fortuna

Fortuna represents a significant advancement in Crossandra breeding. It features an improved root system, greater resistance to temperature fluctuations, more abundant flowering, glossier foliage, and brighter coloured flowers. Notably, the entire spike flowers more completely, extending the plant’s ornamental value.

Diane

Diane is a selection characterised by large, broadly shaped leaves and a robust, compact growth habit. Its flower colour is a darker, richer shade of salmon-orange, and the petals are more rounded and larger than those of the commonly cultivated variety.

Mutant varieties from breeding programmes

Indian researchers, particularly at TNAU, have developed several promising mutant varieties of Crossandra through chemical and radiation-induced mutation breeding.

Kanakadhara

This is a mutant of Delhi Crossandra developed using sodium azide treatment. It produces brilliant orange flowers of normal size but with unique floral characteristics that distinguish it from its parent variety.

Subasu

Also a mutant of Delhi Crossandra, Subasu closely resembles its parent in most respects but features long inflorescences with light orange, medium-sized flowers.

Lakshmi

Derived from a local yellow variety, Lakshmi produces large leaves and big, deep yellow flowers on long inflorescences. It has a notably high yield potential.

Maruvur Arasi

This is a red-coloured mutant of Delhi Crossandra obtained through gamma irradiation. It produces deep bright red flowers – a colour that is quite unusual in the Crossandra genus.

IIHR (Arka) series cultivars

The Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bangalore, has released several cultivars under the “Arka” brand name, including Arka Ambara, Arka Kanaka, Arka Shravya, Arka Shreeya, and Arka Chenna. In performance trials conducted in Andhra Pradesh, Arka Shravya recorded the tallest plant height, the greatest plant spread, the earliest spike initiation, and the maximum number of flowers per spike among ten cultivars tested. Arka Chenna, on the other hand, showed the highest number of branches per plant.

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

This variety holds special cultural significance. Developed by T. Venkatapati Reddiar, a Padma Shri-awarded farmer from Puducherry who created over 100 Crossandra varieties using tissue culture techniques, this cultivar is named after India’s former President. It is planted in the Rashtrapati Bhavan gardens and was developed with enhanced disease resistance and improved flowering characteristics. The flowers are large and vibrant orange, and the plant shows excellent tolerance to heat and humidity.

Choosing the right variety for your needs

Selecting the right Crossandra variety depends on your specific growing conditions and intended purpose. For commercial flower production in India, Delhi Crossandra offers the highest yield per hectare, while the standard Orange type is easier to propagate by seed. In areas with known nematode problems, Sebaculis Red provides built-in pest resistance. For landscape and ornamental use, compact varieties like Mona Wallhead and C. greenstockii work well in front borders and containers. If you want colour variety beyond the traditional orange, Lutea Yellow and Nile Queen offer yellow and reddish alternatives respectively. Crossandra generally thrives in USDA zones 10-11 and can handle partial shade, making it versatile for different garden positions.

For indoor growing, cultivars like Orange Marmalade and Florida Sunset perform reliably as flowering houseplants when given bright indirect light and regular humidity. The key is to keep the soil moist but never waterlogged, and to provide warmth – Crossandra does not tolerate temperatures below about 13ยฐC (55ยฐF).

The future of Crossandra breeding

Crossandra breeding continues to evolve through both conventional hybridisation and modern techniques such as induced mutation and tissue culture. TNAU’s breeding work has already produced hybrids with larger flowers, attractive yellowish-orange petals, and improved tolerance to the nematode-fungus complex that plagues many Crossandra fields. The breeding objectives going forward include developing low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plants for landscape use, and breeding sterile, non-invasive varieties with a wider range of flower colours.

As demand for loose flowers in India grows and ornamental gardening becomes more popular worldwide, the diversity within the Crossandra genus – from its wild African species to the latest IIHR releases – ensures that this firecracker flower will continue to evolve and find new admirers.
