Timing is everything

For flowers like Molucella (Bells of Ireland), the harvest window is precise. These distinctive green towers should be cut when the small white flowers within the green calyces are at their peak, typically when the stems are fully developed but before the flowers begin to fade. Early morning harvesting, when plants are fully hydrated from overnight moisture, helps ensure the stems remain crisp and the flowers hold their characteristic form.

Consider the practical wisdom of experienced flower farmers who time their harvests to the clock. Some begin at dawn with headlamps, racing against the rising sun. Why such urgency? Because once sunlight hits those petals and stems, plants begin losing moisture rapidly through transpiration. This early harvest approach becomes even more critical with winter flowers that may already be stressed by cool temperatures and shorter days.

While cut flower production focuses on blooms, seed collection requires a completely different mindset-patience. These cheerful plants produce large, easily recognizable seeds that look somewhat like wrinkled green peas when forming. The key is patience-seeds in dry husks or pods should be left on the plant to dry naturally before collection.

Watch your nasturtium plants as flowers fade and seed pods develop. The pods will transition from green to tan or light brown, becoming papery to the touch. When you can easily pluck them from the plant and they rattle slightly when shaken-that’s your signal. Collect them on a dry, sunny day after morning dew has evaporated. If you wait too long, these seeds will simply drop to the ground, where they may self-sow or be lost to hungry birds.
