Getting the harvesting technique right and understanding how yield varies across varieties can make a real difference in profitability. When does crossandra start flowering?
Crossandra plants begin flowering within 2-3 months after planting and continue to produce flowers throughout the year. This quick turnaround from planting to first harvest is one of the key reasons the crop is popular among commercial flower growers.
However, production is not uniform across all seasons. During the rainy season, flower output drops noticeably. In southern India, this dip typically coincides with the monsoon months. In northern regions, production can also slow down during winter and during short rainy spells. The rest of the year, the plants bloom steadily, giving growers a consistent supply for local and regional markets.
This year-round production is a significant economic advantage. Unlike many seasonal crops, crossandra provides a relatively stable income stream, and when flower supply in the market is low during off-seasons, prices tend to go up, helping compensate for any dip in volume.
How crossandra flowers are harvested
The harvesting method for crossandra is simple but requires care and consistency. Unlike many cut flower crops where the stem is cut, crossandra harvesting involves pulling the corolla (the colourful petal portion) out of the calyx (the green, outer protective part of the flower). This is the standard technique used across commercial farms in India.
The right time to harvest
Fully opened flowers should be picked early in the morning. At this time, temperatures are cooler and the flowers retain maximum moisture, which helps maintain freshness during transport and sale. Harvesting during the heat of the day leads to faster wilting and shorter shelf life.
Harvesting frequency
Crossandra flowers need to be picked every alternate day. This is because the flowers on a spike open sequentially from the base upward, with two diagonally opposite flowers opening at the same time. Each spike takes about 15-25 days to complete its flowering cycle, so regular harvesting ensures that all flowers are picked at the right stage.
Once flowering on a spike is complete, the spent spike should be removed from the plant. This redirects the plant’s energy toward producing new flower spikes rather than wasting resources on spent ones.
Freshness and shelf life
A fully opened crossandra flower can stay fresh on the plant for about three days. However, once harvested, the flowers tend to fade within 36-48 hours. This short post-harvest life makes timely harvesting and quick transport to the market crucial. Delayed picking or slow transport can significantly reduce the quality and market value of the flowers.
Key crossandra varieties and their yields
The yield of crossandra depends heavily on the variety being grown. The two broad categories are tetraploid varieties and the triploid Delhi variety, each with distinct characteristics.
Tetraploid varieties
The main tetraploid cultivars include Orange, Lutea Yellow, and Sebaculis Red. These varieties have a chromosome count of 2n=40 and are propagated through seeds, with a seed rate of about 5 kg per hectare. Seedlings are typically ready for transplanting around 60 days after sowing.
Among these, the Orange variety is the most widely grown. It sets seeds abundantly, breeds true, and produces bright orange flowers. Sebaculis Red is valued for its high tolerance to nematodes, making it a good choice in fields where nematode infestation is a concern. Lutea Yellow produces orange-yellow flowers and is sometimes used in pot cultivation.
The average yield for tetraploid varieties is around 2,000 kg of flowers per hectare per year.
Delhi Crossandra (triploid)
The Delhi variety is a triploid cultivar (2n=30) known for its deep orange, more attractive flowers. Because it is triploid, it does not produce viable seeds, so it must be propagated through terminal stem cuttings of 10-15 cm length. About 41,700 cuttings are required per hectare.
The yield of Delhi Crossandra is notably higher – up to 2,800 kg of flowers per hectare per year. This makes it a preferred choice where higher output is the priority. However, practical considerations exist: the stems of the Delhi variety tend to be shorter, which can make garland-making slightly more difficult compared to other varieties like Lakshmi.
Yield comparison at a glance
Tetraploid varieties (Orange, Lutea Yellow, Sebaculis Red): ~2,000 kg/ha/year. Delhi Crossandra (Triploid): ~2,800 kg/ha/year. The difference of roughly 800 kg per hectare per year can have a substantial impact on a grower’s revenue, especially considering that crossandra prices can range from โน300 to โน1,200 per kilogram depending on the season.
Factors that influence crossandra yield
While variety selection is the most obvious factor affecting yield, several agronomic practices also play a significant role.
Nutrition and fertilization
Crossandra is a heavy feeder over its three-year crop cycle. For tetraploid varieties, the recommended practice is to apply farmyard manure at 25 tonnes per hectare as a basal dose, followed by NPK at 75:50:125 kg/ha, repeated at half-yearly intervals for two more years. Delhi Crossandra has a different schedule: FYM at 25 t/ha, gypsum at 100 kg/ha, and P and K at 50 and 100 kg/ha as basal, with quarterly top-dressings of NPK at 40:20:60 kg/ha.
Research has also shown that the application of plant growth regulators like GA3 at 200 ppm can significantly boost flower yield, with one study recording yields of over 3,100 kg per hectare under such treatment. Spraying ascorbic acid at 1,000 ppm before flowering is another recommended growth regulator practice.
Irrigation
Adequate and regular irrigation directly impacts flower output. The crop should be irrigated once a week under normal conditions, with more frequent watering during dry spells and flowering stages. Drip irrigation is an efficient option that also helps conserve water.
Pest and disease management
Nematodes and wilt disease caused by Fusarium solani are the two biggest threats to crossandra yield. Fields should be tested for nematode presence before planting. In infested fields, nematicides like Phorate or Carbofuran 3G can be applied. Wilt can be managed by soil drenching with Carbendazim at 1 g per litre. Aphids, another common pest, can be controlled by spraying Dimethoate 30 EC.
Crop duration and economic viability
A crossandra crop typically remains productive for about three years, including a ratoon crop in the third year. During this period, plants continue flowering and yielding, although the output may gradually decline in the final year. This three-year productive cycle means that growers make a one-time investment in land preparation, planting material, and establishment, and then harvest returns over multiple seasons – a significant advantage in terms of cost efficiency.
The relatively low maintenance requirement of crossandra, combined with its year-round production, makes it an attractive option for small and medium-scale growers, particularly in South Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh where it occupies a substantial share of the area under traditional flower crops.
Practical tips for maximizing crossandra harvest
Harvest on time: Never skip the alternate-day picking schedule. Flowers left too long on the plant reduce the quality of subsequent blooms and waste the plant’s energy.
Pick early in the morning: This ensures flowers have maximum turgidity and last longer in the market.
Remove spent spikes promptly: This encourages the plant to produce fresh flowering spikes sooner.
Pack properly for market: For local markets, crossandra flowers are commonly packed in damp gunny bags. For distant markets, bamboo baskets with proper ventilation offer better protection.
Choose the right variety for your market: If your buyers value garland-making ease, the Orange or Lakshmi varieties may be preferred. If maximizing volume is the goal, Delhi Crossandra delivers significantly higher yields.
Plan for labour: Harvesting is the most labour-intensive part of crossandra farming. Flowers need to be picked early, packed, and dispatched to the market quickly. Labour availability and costs should be factored into your profitability calculations from the start.
