Proper air circulation is equally important, as stagnant, humid air creates the perfect environment for fungal diseases.

Dealing with common problems

If you spot signs of disease, act quickly. Bacterial soft rot requires immediate removal of infected parts using sterilized tools, followed by treatment with copper fungicide. For fungal issues like powdery mildew, improve ventilation and consider applying a fungicide formulated for cacti.

Mealybugs, those cottony white pests that cluster on plants, can be dabbed with rubbing alcohol using a cotton swab for small infestations. For more serious cases, neem oil or insecticidal soap provides effective control. The key is persistence-treat affected plants every few weeks until the infestation is completely eliminated.

Prevention truly is easier than cure. Use well-draining soil specifically formulated for cacti and succulents. Choose containers with adequate drainage holes. Quarantine new plants for a few weeks before introducing them to your collection to ensure they’re not harboring pests. Remove dead leaves and debris promptly, as these can harbor pests and diseases.

Creating the ideal growing environment

Maintenance extends beyond watering and feeding-it includes providing the right growing conditions year-round. Most cacti and succulents need bright light, with many species thriving in full sun. However, be cautious about moving plants from lower light to full sun abruptly. Even cacti can sunburn, especially if they’re behind glass that magnifies the sun’s intensity. Gradually acclimate plants to increased light over a week or two.

Temperature considerations matter too. While these plants tolerate heat well, they often need cooler temperatures in winter to encourage flowering. A winter rest period at temperatures in the 40s and 50s Fahrenheit is ideal for many species. Just ensure that if temperatures drop significantly, your plants are dry-the combination of cold and wet is particularly dangerous.

Soil quality deserves attention. Over time, even the best potting mix can become compacted or depleted of nutrients. Plan to refresh or replace soil every 2-3 years, or whenever you notice water draining poorly.
