Setting up a cacti and succulents garden is an exciting project, but it takes more than just selecting your favourite plants. The right tools and materials play a crucial role in how well your garden establishes and thrives over time. From basic hand tools to specialized monitoring devices and top-dressing materials, each item serves a specific purpose – protecting plant health, improving soil conditions, and making your gardening work easier and safer. Here’s a detailed look at everything you’ll need to get started.

Basic gardening tools every cacti gardener needs

Before moving to specialized equipment, you need a solid set of basic gardening tools. These are the workhorses of any cacti and succulents garden, used daily for planting, pruning, and general maintenance.

Knives

A sharp, clean knife is one of the most important tools in your cacti gardening kit. You’ll use it for propagation – making clean cuts on stems and offsets (also called “pups”) – as well as for removing dead or damaged tissue from plants. A clean cut heals faster and reduces the risk of fungal or bacterial infection entering the wound. A standard grafting knife or a sharp utility knife works well. Always sterilize the blade with rubbing alcohol before making cuts to prevent cross-contamination between plants.

Gloves

Handling cacti without proper protection is a recipe for pain. Standard gardening gloves are not enough – many cactus spines, especially the tiny hooked ones called glochids found on Opuntia species, can penetrate ordinary fabric easily. Thick leather gloves, particularly welding gloves that cover the wrists, provide far better protection. Some gardeners also wrap duct tape around the fingers of nitrile gloves to create a spine-resistant surface. Duct tape is also useful for removing glochids from skin if they do get embedded.

Trowels

A trowel is essential for digging, transplanting, and mixing soil. For cacti and succulents, choose a trowel with a narrow, pointed blade. This shape lets you dig precisely without disturbing the roots of neighbouring plants – an important consideration in densely planted gardens or container arrangements. Stainless steel trowels resist rust and last longer, making them a practical choice for the long term.

Pruners (secateurs)

Pruners are used for trimming, shaping, and removing dead growth from your cacti and succulents. Bypass pruners are the best type for this purpose because they make a clean, scissor-like cut rather than crushing the plant tissue. Crushed tissue heals slowly and is vulnerable to infection. Keep your pruners sharp and clean, and wipe the blades with a 70% alcohol solution between plants, particularly if you’re working with a plant that shows signs of disease.

Tweezers and tongs

Long-handled tweezers (12 to 15 inches) are incredibly useful for tasks that require precision in tight or prickly spaces. You can use them to remove debris, dead leaves, and weeds from between spiny plants without putting your hands at risk. They’re also handy for placing small cuttings or seedlings during propagation. Kitchen tongs serve a similar role – they’re great for gripping and repositioning small to medium cacti. Padding the tips of tongs with foam or sponge helps prevent damage to delicate spines.

Specialized equipment for cacti and succulents

Beyond the basics, certain specialized tools help you monitor and control growing conditions more precisely. These are especially important because cacti and succulents are highly sensitive to overwatering and soil chemistry imbalances.

Moisture meters

Overwatering is the single most common cause of death in cacti and succulents. The surface of the soil can appear dry while the lower layers remain wet – and that hidden moisture is where root rot begins. A soil moisture meter solves this problem by measuring moisture levels deeper in the soil, right at the root zone.

Most moisture meters are simple probe-style devices. You insert the probe 2 to 4 inches into the soil, wait about 60 seconds, and read the gauge. Scales typically range from 1 (very dry) to 10 (very wet). For most cacti and succulents, you should wait until the meter reads in the 1-3 range before watering again.

Some models come as 3-in-1 testers that measure soil moisture, pH, and light levels in one device. These multi-function meters are convenient and don’t require batteries to operate, making them practical for both indoor and outdoor use. One thing to note: these meters can sometimes give inaccurate readings in very gritty, inorganic soil mixes because the probe needs good contact with moist particles to register correctly. Always remove the probe after taking a reading to prevent corrosion.

pH testing paper

Cacti and succulents prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil, with an ideal pH range of about 6.0 to 7.0. Soil that is too alkaline or too acidic can interfere with nutrient uptake, leading to poor growth and even plant death. pH testing paper (also known as litmus paper) is an inexpensive and straightforward way to check your soil’s acidity.

To use it, mix a small amount of soil with distilled water, dip the testing strip into the solution, and compare the colour change against the chart provided with the strips. If your soil is outside the ideal range, you can adjust it – adding sulphur to lower pH or limestone to raise it. Regular pH monitoring is especially important if you use tap water for irrigation, since tap water in many regions tends to be alkaline.

Spray bottles

A spray bottle filled with 70% isopropyl alcohol is a must-have for pest control. Mealybugs, scale insects, and spider mites are common pests on cacti and succulents. A quick spray directly on the pests is an effective and low-toxicity treatment. A separate spray bottle for water can also be useful for misting newly propagated cuttings or seedlings that haven’t developed full root systems yet.

Chopsticks and dibbers

This might sound unconventional, but a simple chopstick is one of the most useful tools for working with cacti and succulents. Use it to settle roots during planting, push soil into gaps between closely placed plants, and check soil moisture (a dry chopstick pulled from the soil means it’s time to water). A dibber or awl serves a similar purpose – it’s pointed for making planting holes for seeds, cuttings, and offsets in compacted soil.

Containers and drainage essentials

The right container is just as important as the right soil. Cacti and succulents are extremely intolerant of waterlogged conditions, so drainage is non-negotiable.

Terracotta pots with drainage holes are widely regarded as the best option for cacti. The porous clay material allows moisture to evaporate through the pot walls, helping the soil dry out faster between waterings. Glazed ceramic and plastic pots retain moisture longer, which can be acceptable in very dry climates but risky in humid conditions.

Place a small piece of window screen mesh over the drainage hole before adding soil. This prevents soil from washing out through the hole during watering while still allowing excess water to escape freely. It also stops pests from entering through the drainage hole – a surprisingly common problem with outdoor containers.

Soil mix and amendments

Getting the soil right is fundamental. Cacti and succulents require a fast-draining growing medium that doesn’t hold excess moisture around the roots. You can buy pre-made cactus and succulent mixes, or you can make your own by combining regular potting soil with coarse sand, perlite, or pumice.

A widely recommended ratio is two parts inorganic material (pumice, perlite, or coarse sand) to one part organic material (compost or coir). For very rot-prone species like certain columnar cacti and euphorbias, increase the inorganic proportion further. According to Grow Organic, mixing up to 50% pumice into potting soil creates ideal growing conditions for cacti and succulents.

Avoid soil mixes that contain a high proportion of peat moss, as peat can become hydrophobic (water-repellent) when fully dried out and then holds too much water when re-wetted. Also avoid heavy garden soil or mixes with large chunks of bark, as these can promote mould and pest issues.

Top-dressing materials

Top dressing refers to a layer of inorganic material spread over the soil surface after planting. It’s not just decorative – it provides several practical benefits for cacti and succulents.

Why use top dressing?

A good top dressing does the following for your cacti garden:

Prevents soil splash and erosion: When you water, the force of the stream can displace soil and splash muddy water onto the lower stems of your plants. A layer of gravel or pebbles breaks up this force, keeping soil in place and the plant base clean and dry. Reduces rot risk: By keeping the crown and base of the plant separated from damp soil, top dressing helps prevent rot at the soil line – one of the most common causes of cactus death. Regulates soil temperature: The inorganic layer acts as insulation, moderating temperature swings between day and night. Dark-coloured top dressings absorb more heat, while light-coloured ones reflect it. Suppresses weeds: A continuous layer of pebbles or gravel makes it difficult for weed seeds to germinate and establish. Improves appearance: A well-chosen top dressing gives the garden a polished, professional look that echoes the plants’ natural habitat.

Pumice

Pumice is a lightweight, porous volcanic rock and one of the best top-dressing materials for cacti and succulents. Its porous structure means it can absorb and slowly release moisture, helping to regulate the hydration of the upper soil layer. Unlike perlite, pumice doesn’t float to the surface when watered – it stays in place. It also doesn’t decompose, rot, or blow away, making it a permanent addition to your garden.

As a soil amendment mixed into the growing medium, pumice improves drainage and aeration. As a top dressing, it protects the plant crown from sitting in soggy soil during heavy rain. Pumice is available in various grades; the 1/4-inch size is the most commonly used for succulent and cactus containers. It’s also naturally rich in trace minerals that can benefit plant health over time.

Beach pebbles

Beach pebbles are smooth, rounded stones available in a range of colours – white, grey, brown, black, and mixed. They make an attractive top dressing and are heavy enough to stay in place even in windy outdoor settings. Beyond aesthetics, beach pebbles help retain soil moisture by reducing surface evaporation and prevent weed growth.

One important precaution: if you’re using actual pebbles collected from a beach, wash them thoroughly before use. Beach sand and unwashed pebbles can contain high salt levels that will damage your plants over time. Commercially sold decorative pebbles labelled for garden use are typically pre-washed and safe.

Other top-dressing options

Depending on the look you want and what’s available in your area, you can also use crushed granite, decomposed granite (DG), aquarium gravel, crushed coral, or even fire glass as a top dressing. Each has a different visual character. Crushed granite provides a natural, earthy look. Fire glass adds a bold, modern touch. The Huntington Botanical Gardens in California, one of the world’s most renowned cactus collections, historically uses a soil mix heavy in pumice and tops beds with inorganic materials to protect plant crowns.

Additional supplies worth having

A few more items round out a well-equipped cacti gardening station:

Newspaper or folded paper strips: A folded strip of newspaper makes an excellent handle for moving spiny cacti without touching them. Wrap it around the plant like a collar and lift. This technique is widely used by collectors and nursery professionals for transplanting prickly species safely.

Soft artist’s brush: Useful for cleaning dust and debris off leaves and out of tight spaces between spines. The pointed end of the brush handle can also double as a dibber for settling roots.

Labels and markers: If you’re growing a collection with multiple species, labelling your plants is essential. Wooden ice-lolly sticks or plastic plant tags work well. Some gardeners also use the wooden stick as a low-tech moisture tester – push it into the soil and check if it comes out dry.

Watering can with a narrow spout or squeeze bottle: A squeeze bottle or long-spouted watering can directs water straight to the soil without splashing the stems or leaves. This is important because water sitting on cactus tissue, especially in humid conditions, can encourage fungal growth.

Putting it all together

Building a cacti and succulents garden doesn’t require an enormous investment in tools, but having the right equipment from the start saves time and prevents common mistakes. The basics – a good knife, protective gloves, a trowel, and pruners – handle most day-to-day tasks. Specialized tools like moisture meters and pH testing paper help you monitor the two biggest threats to cacti health: overwatering and poor soil chemistry. And top-dressing materials like pumice and beach pebbles protect your plants while giving the garden a finished, natural appearance.
