Crossandra, scientifically known as Crossandra infundibuliformis, is one of the most commercially valuable flowers in tropical floriculture. Native to southern India and Sri Lanka, this compact evergreen shrub belongs to the Acanthaceae family and produces vibrant blooms in shades of orange, salmon, yellow, and red almost year-round. While it lacks fragrance, its bright colours, lightweight petals, and excellent keeping quality have earned it a permanent place in South Indian flower markets, religious rituals, and home gardens. Why crossandra matters in commercial floriculture

Crossandra stands out among flower crops for several practical reasons. It is a perennial plant that flowers throughout the year, requires relatively low inputs of fertiliser, and offers high profitability compared to many seasonal flowers. According to research published in the International Journal of Creative Research Thoughts, crossandra has gained considerable importance over other flower crops due to its perennial nature, continuous blooming, and minimal fertiliser consumption.

Commercially, crossandra is cultivated extensively in the southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. As per data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), crossandra is among the traditional flowers grown across large areas in these states, forming a key part of India’s loose flower trade. The estimated cultivation area in Tamil Nadu alone is around 1,317 hectares, producing approximately 2,634 tonnes annually.

An average yield of 2,000 kg of flowers per hectare per year is achievable with standard varieties, while the Delhi Crossandra variety can produce up to 2,800 kg per hectare per year, as documented by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU). This consistent output, combined with the crop’s three-year duration (including ratoon cropping), makes it a dependable income source for small and marginal farmers.

Cultural and religious significance

Crossandra flowers are deeply woven into the cultural fabric of South India. In states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh, these bright orange blooms are considered essential for religious and ceremonial purposes.

Temple offerings and worship

Crossandra is one of the most commonly used flowers for temple offerings across South India. Its vibrant orange colour is associated with auspiciousness, and the flowers are offered to deities during daily worship and festivals. The lightweight nature of the petals and their ability to stay fresh for extended periods make them ideal for temple use, where large volumes of flowers are needed daily.

Hair adornments: gajras and venis

One of the most distinctive uses of crossandra is in traditional hair decoration. Women in South India routinely wear strands of crossandra flowers, known as gajras or venis, in their hair during weddings, festivals, and everyday occasions. According to the University of Florida’s IFAS Extension, crossandra blossoms are traditionally combined with jasmine to adorn women’s hair in India and Sri Lanka. The combination works well because jasmine provides fragrance while crossandra contributes vivid colour.

Half-opened crossandra buds are often preferred for hair decorations because they continue opening slowly, keeping the arrangement looking fresh for hours. This practical quality – combined with the flower’s light weight – makes it more comfortable for daily wear compared to heavier blooms.

Garlands and floral decorations

Crossandra flowers are widely strung into garlands, either alone or mixed with jasmine and other flowers. This practice is especially popular in South Indian weddings, housewarmings, and religious ceremonies. As noted by TNAU, using crossandra in combination with jasmine has become increasingly popular because the pairing creates both colour contrast and fragrance.

Use as a pot plant and houseplant

Beyond its role as a loose flower crop, crossandra has gained significant popularity as an ornamental pot plant. Its compact growth habit – typically reaching 30 to 90 cm in height – glossy dark green foliage, and continuous flowering make it well-suited for indoor and patio settings.

Crossandra has commercial importance as a potted ornamental in countries like Denmark, Sweden, and Hungary, where it is grown and marketed as a flowering houseplant. The plant thrives indoors when given adequate light and humidity, performing well under conditions similar to those required by African violets. Costa Farms, a major U.S. nursery, notes that crossandra is valued equally for its constant display of orange or apricot flowers and its glossy foliage.

For indoor growers, crossandra pairs well with contrasting containers – purple or white pots work particularly well against its warm-toned flowers. The plant can also be placed alongside other tropical houseplants like coleus and lantana in container arrangements.

Landscape applications

Crossandra’s compact size and year-round blooming habit make it an excellent choice for landscaping in tropical and subtropical regions. Here are some of its primary landscape uses:

Garden beds and borders: Crossandra works well as a front-of-border plant or as mass plantings in garden beds. Its height of one to three feet and bushy growth create a dense, colourful display. In frost-free regions, it functions as an evergreen perennial that blooms most of the year.

Shade gardens: Unlike many flowering plants, crossandra tolerates partial shade, making it useful for shaded garden areas where other blooming plants struggle. The NC State Extension classifies it as suitable for shade gardens and shade borders.

Public parks and institutional grounds: In South India, crossandra is commonly planted in parks, temple gardens, resort landscapes, and along institutional pathways. Its low maintenance needs and reliable flowering make it practical for large-scale plantings.

Container gardening: In regions with cold winters, crossandra is grown as an annual in outdoor containers during the warm months and brought indoors during winter. It pairs effectively with sun-tolerant companion plants in mixed container displays.

Vase arrangements and floral design

Although crossandra is primarily marketed as a loose flower in India, it is also used in vase arrangements and modern floral designs. The flowers sit atop erect stems with five asymmetrical, overlapping petals that create a compact and visually appealing display. Flower colours range from the common orange and salmon-orange to coral, red, yellow, and even turquoise in some species.

One practical advantage of crossandra in floral work is its post-harvest durability. Fully opened flowers remain fresh on the plant for about three days. Once picked, they maintain their appearance for 36 to 48 hours without any special preservation treatment, which is reasonable for a tropical loose flower. For vase use, the flowers’ natural waxy coating provides some protection against moisture loss and physical damage during handling.

In modern floral design, crossandra’s compact flower form and bright colour palette make it suitable for small, tight arrangements and table centrepieces where a vivid tropical look is desired.

Medicinal and traditional uses

Beyond ornamental and cultural applications, crossandra has a history of use in traditional Indian medicine. The plant is recognised in both Ayurvedic and Siddha systems of medicine for its therapeutic properties.

According to a review published in the International Journal of Research and Development in Pharmacy & Life Sciences, crossandra is well known for medicinal use across various regions of India. The flower extract has been traditionally used for conditions like fever, headache, pain relief, and appetite stimulation. Leaves and bark also find use in folk remedies – leaf paste is applied for toothache, and bark ground with turmeric is used for treating skin conditions in children.

Modern pharmacological studies have identified several bioactive compounds in crossandra, including flavonoids, terpenoids, and steroidal glycosides. Research has documented properties such as hepatoprotective, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing activity. A study on wound healing found that a 4% flower extract ointment showed results superior to the standard drug in experimental models.

While these findings are promising, most studies remain preliminary and small-scale. Crossandra’s medicinal potential is an active area of research interest.

Ecological benefits

Crossandra contributes positively to local ecosystems. Its colourful blossoms attract pollinators including butterflies and dragonflies, as noted by the University of Florida. For farmers practising intercropping, crossandra plants on the farm can improve pollination of nearby crops due to the increased pollinator activity they attract.

The plant is also classified as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses, making it a safe choice for gardens and homes with pets. Its disease-resistant and insect-resistant characteristics further reduce the need for chemical interventions in the garden.

Economic importance for small farmers

For smallholder farmers in South India, crossandra represents a reliable livelihood option. The crop begins flowering just two to three months after planting and continues producing throughout the year, with only a slight dip during the monsoon season. This year-round production ensures a steady income flow, unlike seasonal crops that generate revenue only during limited harvest windows.

Market prices for crossandra flowers in India range from approximately โ‚น300 to โ‚น1,200 per kilogram depending on the season and market demand. Even with a modest landholding, farmers can generate meaningful returns. The flowers are sold in local wholesale markets and are a staple at major flower trading centres in cities like Madurai, Chennai, and Bengaluru, as documented in the FAO’s report on Indian floriculture.

The crop’s relatively low maintenance requirements – moderate fertiliser needs, tolerance to a range of soil types, and a three-year crop duration – further improve its economic viability for resource-constrained growers.

Key varieties and their uses

Several crossandra varieties are cultivated commercially, each suited to different purposes:

Orange Crossandra is the most widely grown tetraploid variety, producing bright orange flowers. It sets seeds profusely and breeds true, making propagation straightforward.

Delhi Crossandra is a triploid variety that produces deeper orange flowers and higher yields (up to 2,800 kg/ha/year). Since it does not produce viable seeds, it is propagated through stem cuttings.

Lutea Yellow is a tetraploid variety with orange-yellow flowers, offering a different colour option for garland makers and landscapers.

Sebaculis Red is a hardy tetraploid cultivar valued for its high tolerance to root-knot nematodes, a major pest concern in crossandra cultivation.

Additionally, IIHR (Indian Institute of Horticultural Research) has released improved varieties like Arka Ambara and Arka Kanaka, as listed by the TNAU Agritech Portal, which offer better flower quality and field performance.

Crossandra in the broader floriculture industry

Within India’s floriculture sector, crossandra occupies an important niche as a traditional loose flower. India’s flower-growing area covers approximately 65,000 hectares, with more than two-thirds devoted to loose flowers like marigold, jasmine, chrysanthemum, and crossandra. Tamil Nadu leads the country in flower production, contributing around 25% of national output.

While crossandra’s export potential remains limited compared to roses or orchids, recent improvements in post-harvest handling and cold chain logistics are opening new possibilities. The flower’s natural durability gives it an advantage for transport over longer distances, potentially expanding its market reach beyond South India.

As consumer interest in tropical and indigenous flowers grows globally, crossandra – with its vivid aesthetics, low-maintenance cultivation, and rich cultural heritage – is well-positioned to gain wider recognition in the international floriculture market.
