Crossandra, often called the firecracker flower, is one of those plants that quietly dominates South Indian floriculture without getting the global spotlight it deserves. It is an important commercial flower, mainly grown in India, tropical Africa, and Madagascar. Native to southern India and Sri Lanka , this evergreen shrub produces vibrant blooms year-round and has become a staple in temple offerings, garlands, and traditional hair adornments across the subcontinent. Origin and natural habitat

Crossandra infundibuliformis is native to seasonally dry tropical regions, including parts of tropical Africa, India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. In India, wild populations are concentrated in the southern states. In its native habitats, the species occurs in Kerala across districts like Idukki, Kasaragod, Kozhikode, and Palakkad, and throughout Tamil Nadu with notable presence in areas like the Alagar Hills in Madurai district, Kolli Hills in Namakkal, and Shevaroy Hills in Salem. In Sri Lanka, the plant is found in the southern wet zones and tropical lowlands.

The plant grows naturally in scrub jungles, forest thickets, and slopes from foothills up to 1,000 metres in elevation. This wide altitudinal range is one reason Crossandra adapts well to diverse growing conditions across the tropics. The species is also native to eastern and central tropical Africa, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The word “Crossandra” is derived from the Greek words Krossos meaning “fringe” and Aner meaning “male,” referring to the fringed anthers of the flower. In regional languages, the flower goes by Kanakambaram in Tamil, Malayalam, and Telugu, and Aboli in Marathi.

Botanical profile

Crossandra belongs to the family Acanthaceae. There are 20-25 species, but only a few – such as Crossandra infundibuliformis, C. undulaefolia, C. guineensis, C. mucronata, and C. subacaulis – are cultivated. The species most widely grown for commercial flower production is Crossandra undulaefolia.

The plant is an evergreen subshrub that typically grows 1 to 3 feet tall, featuring glossy, dark green, oblong-ovate leaves with wavy margins. The flowers are fan-shaped and may appear at any time throughout the year. The blooms emerge in sequence from the base of the spike – two flowers that are diagonally opposite on the spike open at the same time, and it takes about two days for each flower to fully open.

The “firecracker” name

The common name “firecracker flower” comes from an interesting seed dispersal mechanism. The seed pods, which form after the flower dries up, tend to burst open explosively when exposed to high humidity or rainfall, releasing seeds onto the ground. This natural explosive dehiscence is both a survival strategy and a fascinating botanical feature.

Commercial varieties grown in India

Indian growers work with two main categories of Crossandra varieties based on their ploidy levels:

Tetraploid types (2n=40): Orange Crossandra is a tetraploid that sets seeds profusely, breeds true, and produces bright orange flowers. Lutea Yellow is also tetraploid with orange-yellow flowers. Sebaculis Red is a hardy tetraploid cultivar with a high degree of tolerance to nematodes.

Triploid type (2n=30): The Delhi Crossandra cultivar is triploid and produces more attractive flowers of a bright deep orange colour. Because triploids don’t set viable seeds easily, Delhi Crossandra must be propagated through terminal cuttings of 10-15 cm length.

Research institutions like Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) and the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bengaluru, have developed improved cultivars. TNAU bred a hybrid from two local types collected from the Palni and Marudhamalai hills, which produces larger flowers and shows high field tolerance to the nematode-fungus complex. IIHR has released varieties such as Arka Kanaka, Arka Chenna, Arka Shreeya, and Arka Ambara, each suited to different growing conditions.

Cultivation potential and growing conditions

Crossandra is a tropical plant with specific but fairly manageable requirements. Understanding these conditions helps growers maximise yield and flower quality.

Climate requirements

Crossandra requires a temperature of 30-35ยฐC for optimal growth. It is shade-tolerant to some extent but susceptible to low temperatures and frost. These flowers thrive in warm and humid climates, making them ideal for farming in tropical regions. This is why the crop performs exceptionally well in South Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala.

Soil preferences

Well-drained sandy loam and red soils with a pH of 6.0-7.5 are ideal for Crossandra. Alkaline or saline soils are not suitable because plants develop chlorosis. It is also recommended to test soil for nematode presence before planting, as root-knot nematodes are a major pest of this crop.

Propagation methods

Crossandra can be raised through seeds as well as by cuttings or seedlings. The required seed rate is 5 kg/ha for optimum plant population. Sixty-day-old seedlings are transplanted into the main field. For the Delhi cultivar, rooted cuttings are the only viable propagation method since it does not produce fertile seeds.

Planting and spacing

Seedlings or rooted cuttings, treated with fungicide, are planted on the side of ridges at a spacing of 30 cm between plants and 60 cm between ridges. Providing partial shade, especially during the establishment phase, helps maintain plant health and improves flower yield.

Flowering, yield, and economics

Crossandra begins flowering 2-3 months after planting and continues to bear flowers throughout the year, with a drop in production during the rainy season. This year-round blooming habit is one of the crop’s biggest advantages for commercial growers – most other loose flowers are seasonal.

An average yield of 2,000 kg of flowers per hectare per year can be obtained, while the Delhi Crossandra variety can produce up to 2,800 kg per hectare per year. The price for Crossandra flowers can range from โ‚น300 to โ‚น1,200 per kilogram depending on the season , with peak prices during major festival periods.

The crop duration extends up to 3 years, including a ratoon crop in the third year. This perennial nature means that once established, Crossandra provides income for multiple years without replanting – a significant economic advantage over annual flower crops.

Area under cultivation in India

Crossandra is cultivated on approximately 4,000 hectares of land in the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. According to data from the National Horticulture Board (NHB, 2022), India’s total Crossandra cultivation area is about 3,003 hectares with a production of approximately 1,65,300 tonnes.

Tamil Nadu ranks first among the flower-producing states of India, occupying about 25% of the country’s flower production. Crossandra is among the six major loose flowers produced in the state alongside jasmine, chrysanthemum, marigold, rose, and nerium. Major flower markets such as Madurai and Chennai handle significant volumes of Crossandra trade daily.

Cultural significance and traditional uses

Despite lacking fragrance, Crossandra holds a deeply entrenched position in South Indian culture. The flowers are prized for three key qualities: their bright colour, light weight, and good keeping quality.

Hair adornment and garlands

The flowers are commonly used for hair adornment, and though not fragrant, they are very popular because of their attractive bright colour, light weight, and good keeping quality. Women across South India string Crossandra flowers into gajras (floral hair accessories) – gajras are typically made of jasmine, but rose, crossandra, and barleria are also widely used .

The most popular use is combining Crossandra with jasmine in floral strands. Using Crossandra flowers in combination with jasmine is becoming increasingly popular in India, particularly in the southern parts, because the jasmine flowers provide colour contrast and the desired fragrance. The vibrant orange of Crossandra against the white of jasmine creates a visually striking combination – the Crossandra brings colour, and the jasmine brings scent.

Temple offerings and religious use

Crossandra flowers are used in religious ceremonies as offerings to gods and goddesses. They are believed to be the favourite flowers of Lord Hanuman, Lord Subrahmanya, Goddess Lakshmi, and Goddess Lalitha. Every morning, devotees carry fresh Crossandra blooms to temples across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. This consistent religious demand provides a stable market base for growers throughout the year.

Durability advantage

Fully opened flowers remain fresh on the plant for about three days; when picked, they last 36-48 hours. This is considerably longer than many other loose flowers, which makes Crossandra practical for garlands, decorations, and temple use where flowers need to hold up for at least a day.

Landscape and ornamental value

Beyond the loose flower trade, Crossandra has considerable potential as an ornamental and landscaping plant. The plant serves as a valuable ornamental shrub, well-suited for adorning temples and enhancing garden landscapes, whether cultivated in flower beds, along borders, or as potted plants.

Crossandra is easy to grow and can be used as a houseplant or in the landscape. Its compact size, glossy foliage, and continuous flowering make it a favourite for tropical and subtropical gardens. In colder climates, it is grown successfully as an indoor flowering plant with adequate warmth and humidity.

Challenges in Crossandra cultivation

While Crossandra is relatively low-maintenance, growers do face some challenges:

Nematode infestation: Root-knot nematodes are a significant problem. Growers are advised to avoid planting in nematode-infested fields and to apply nematicides like Phorate or Carbofuran as preventive treatment.

Wilt disease: This fungal problem can wipe out entire plantings if not managed early. Soil drenching with Carbendazim or Triflooxystrobin + tebuconazole is recommended for control.

Labour-intensive harvesting: Flower picking is labour-intensive, especially during the harvest stage, as hand-picking has to be done in the early hours of the morning on alternate days without fail. This adds to production costs and requires reliable labour availability.

Rain sensitivity: Flower production drops during the monsoon season, and heavy rains can damage the delicate blooms on the plant.

Future prospects

Crossandra cultivation has strong growth potential for several reasons. First, the demand for loose flowers in India continues to rise, driven by urbanisation, growing disposable incomes, and undiminished cultural and religious demand. Crossandra is in high demand for its vibrant orange colour and long shelf life , and this demand shows no signs of slowing.

Second, breeding programmes at institutions like IIHR Bengaluru and TNAU are continuously developing improved cultivars with better yield, pest resistance, and colour range. Recent evaluations of Crossandra genotypes across different agro-climatic zones in India are helping identify varieties best suited to specific regions.

Third, Crossandra’s potential as a landscape plant and potted ornamental opens up markets beyond the traditional loose flower trade. As urban landscaping and home gardening expand in India, compact flowering shrubs like Crossandra stand to benefit significantly.
