Marigold, scientifically known as Tagetes spp., is one of the most widely cultivated flower crops across the world. Native to Central and South America, especially Mexico, marigold spread to different parts of the world during the early 16th century. Whether you spot it in a temple garland, a garden border, or a poultry feed additive, marigold has carved a place for itself across industries – from floriculture and agriculture to food processing and medicine. Its low-maintenance nature, vivid colours, and diverse applications make it a go-to crop for both commercial growers and home gardeners.

Origin and distribution
The genus name Tagetes was given after Tages, a demigod known for his beauty. African marigold was first introduced into Spain early in the 16th century and became popular in Southern Europe. Despite their names, neither African nor French marigolds actually originate in Africa or France. African marigolds are called that because they were first imported to Europe via a trade route that passed through northwest Africa, while French marigolds derived their name from their popularity in French gardens.
In India, marigold cultivation is concentrated near major cities. Major growing states include Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra. The flower holds deep cultural and religious significance in India, where it is used extensively for garlands, temple offerings, wedding decorations, and festivals like Diwali and Dussehra.
Major species and varieties of marigold
The three most commonly cultivated species of marigold are African marigold, French marigold, and Signet marigold. Each differs significantly in height, flower size, growth habit, and end use.
African marigold (Tagetes erecta)
African marigolds are the biggest of the marigolds and can reach heights of 3 to 4 feet. They have a strong upright habit and produce large double flowers that are up to 5 inches in diameter. The flower colour ranges from lemon yellow to deep orange. Popular varieties include Pusa Narangi Gainda, Pusa Basanti Gainda, Crackerjack, Climax, Doubloon, Golden Age, and Spun Gold. Pusa Narangi Gainda produces orange flowers with big ruffled florets and yields about 25-30 tonnes per hectare. African types are the preferred choice for loose flower production and garland-making.
French marigold (Tagetes patula)
French marigolds have a bushy and compact growing habit, usually standing between 6 and 12 inches tall. Double varieties are much more common, with blooms up to 2 inches wide. The flower colour varies from yellow to mahogany red. Popular varieties include Red Brocade, Rusty Red, Butter Scotch, Valencia, and Succana. French marigolds are ideal for rockeries, edging, hanging baskets, and window boxes.
Signet marigold (Tagetes tenuifolia)
Signet marigolds are the smallest type, usually 6 inches tall or less, with a mounding growth habit. Their flowers have a single row of petals, are only about 1 inch wide, and are edible – commonly used in salads or as a garnish. Varieties include Golden Gem, Lulu, Pumila, and Ursula.
Climate and soil requirements
Marigold requires mild climate for luxuriant growth and flowering. Mild temperatures during the growing period (14.5ยฐC-28.6ยฐC) greatly improve flowering, while higher temperatures (26.2ยฐC-36.4ยฐC) adversely affect flower production. Severe winter and frost can blacken and kill the plants.
Marigold is adaptable to different types of soil conditions. However, a deep, fertile, friable soil with good water-holding capacity, well drained and near neutral pH (7.0-7.5), is most desirable. The ideal soil for marigold cultivation is fertile sandy loam. To increase the drainage of heavy garden soil, incorporating compost or sand is recommended.
Seasons and sowing schedule
Marigold can be grown three times in a year – during the rainy, winter, and summer seasons. The following schedule is typically followed in India:
Rainy season: Sowing in mid-June, transplanting in mid-July.
Winter season: Sowing in mid-September, transplanting in mid-October.
Summer season: Sowing in January-February, transplanting in February-March.
This flexibility in growing seasons is one reason marigold remains in constant commercial demand throughout the year.
Propagation methods
Marigold is primarily propagated through two methods: seeds and stem cuttings.
Seed propagation
For raising seedlings for one hectare, about 1.0 kg of seed is required. Seeds can be sown in pots, seed boxes, or on flat or raised nursery beds. Seeds should be planted about 1/4 inch deep and fully covered with growing media. They germinate in 5 to 8 days at 70-75ยฐF (21-24ยฐC). Nursery beds are prepared by incorporating well-rotted farmyard manure (FYM).
At the time of transplanting, seedlings should be 7 to 10 cm tall and bear 3-4 true leaves. Transplanting should be done in well-prepared land in the evening hours.
Propagation by cuttings
For the cutting method, 6-10 cm long cuttings are taken from the apical portion of the shoot and treated with root-promoting hormones like IAA and IBA. Cuttings planted in sand or vermiculite root easily. This method is especially useful for maintaining varietal purity in specific cultivars. The rooted cuttings can then be transferred to beds or pots for further growth and flowering.
Field preparation and spacing
Proper field preparation is crucial for a good marigold crop. The land should be ploughed 2-3 times to achieve a fine tilth. FYM is applied at the rate of about 50 tonnes per hectare during the last ploughing.
African marigold (T. erecta) requires 40 ร 30 cm spacing, while French marigold (T. patula) requires 20 ร 20 cm or 20 ร 10 cm spacing for high yield. Proper spacing ensures adequate sunlight, air circulation, and room for bushy growth.
Nutrient, water, and weed management
Fertilization
Marigold benefits from balanced nutrition. A general recommendation is to apply NPK at 80:40:80 kg per hectare. Nitrogen is typically split into two or three applications during the growth period. After initial planting, marigolds are low feeders – too much fertilizer causes excessive foliage growth at the expense of blooms.
Irrigation
The frequency and quantity of water mainly depends on soil type and season. In lighter soil, more frequent irrigation is needed. Weekly irrigation is necessary from September to March in sandy loam soil, while during summer months (April to June), irrigation every 4-5 days is required. Over-watering should be avoided as marigolds tolerate drought better than waterlogged conditions.
Weeding
Weed control is essential for healthy growth. Typically, 3-4 manual weedings are carried out throughout the crop cycle. Chemical weed control methods can also supplement manual weeding.
Pinching: a key cultural practice
Pinching – the removal of the growing tip – is one of the most impactful techniques in marigold cultivation. When the apical portion of the shoot is removed early, a large number of axillary shoots develop, resulting in well-shaped bushy plants bearing more uniform flowers. Removal of shoot apices about 40 days after transplanting enhances flower yield.
Marigolds benefit from having their main stem pinched back when the plant is 8-12 inches tall, which encourages branching and results in more and longer stems. For tall African varieties, staking is recommended to support the heavy flower heads and prevent stem breakage.
Pest management
Although marigold is generally a hardy crop, several pests can cause damage:
Red spider mite (Tetranychus sp.): These mites sometimes appear near flowering time, giving plants a dusty appearance. They can be controlled by spraying Metasystox 25 EC or Rogor at 1 ml per litre of water.
Hairy caterpillar (Diacrisia obliqua): This pest feeds on the foliage and can be managed with appropriate insecticides at recommended doses.
Aphids: These sap-sucking insects attack leaves and tender shoots, causing curling and stunted growth. Effective control options include neem oil, pyrethrin-based products, insecticidal soap, and spinosad.
Bud caterpillar (Helicoverpa armigera): This pest feeds internally on flower buds and can significantly reduce bloom quality. Removal of infested parts and timely insecticide application helps in control.
Disease management
The key diseases affecting marigold include:
Damping off: Caused by Rhizoctonia solani, it appears as brown necrotic spots girdling the radicle and can cause pre-emergence mortality. Seeds should be treated with Captan at 3 g or Carbendazim at 2.5 g per kilogram of seeds before sowing.
Flower bud rot: Caused by Alternaria dianthi, this disease mainly affects young flower buds, causing dry rotting. Regular spraying with Dithane M-45 at 0.2% concentration is recommended.
Powdery mildew: Oidium sp. causes whitish, superficial spots on leaves. Eventually, the entire aerial part can be covered with whitish powder. It can be controlled by spraying Karathane or dusting with sulphur powder at fortnightly intervals.
Collar rot: Caused by Phytophthora sp. and Pythium sp., this disease can be prevented through soil sterilization and by using healthy seedlings.
Harvesting and yield
Marigold flowers are plucked when they have attained full size. Plucking should be done in cool hours of the day. The field should be irrigated before plucking so that flowers keep well for a longer period after harvest. Harvested flowers are typically collected in polythene bags or bamboo baskets lined with moist muslin cloth for transport to markets.
Flowers are generally picked once every 3 days, and harvesting begins roughly 60 days after transplanting. Yield varies significantly by variety and cultural practices, but African marigold can produce roughly 15-25 tonnes of flowers per hectare.
Uses of marigold
Marigold is far more than just a decorative flower. Its applications span several industries.
Ornamental and cultural uses
Marigold is grown as an ornamental crop for loose flowers as well as for garlands. It is widely used in landscape plans due to its variable height and colour. In India and Mexico, marigold holds immense cultural importance – from Diwali decorations to the Day of the Dead celebrations.
Poultry feed and natural pigment
Marigold extract is a xanthophyll pigment mixture whose active ingredient is lutein. Marigold meals and extracts are among the most widely accepted natural pigments in poultry feed. Marigold extract has been used commercially as a poultry feed additive to improve pigmentation of broiler skin and egg yolk colour. The lutein content in marigold petals accounts for roughly 80-90% of total carotenoids, making it an extremely efficient natural colouring source.
Nematode suppression and companion planting
Marigold produces a substance called alpha-terthienyl, which can aid in the reduction of root-knot nematodes and other disease-promoting organisms such as fungi, bacteria, insects, and some viruses. This property makes marigold an excellent cover crop and companion plant, especially for vegetable crops like tomatoes and peppers. French marigold cultivars appear to be most effective against the widest range of nematode species.
Medicinal and cosmetic applications
Leaf paste is used externally against boils and carbuncles. Leaf extract serves as a remedy for earache. Flower extract is considered a blood purifier and has been traditionally used to treat bleeding piles, eye diseases, and ulcers. The essential oils present in different Tagetes species are also used in the perfume and cosmetic industries.
Dye and food colouring
The carotenoids extracted from marigold petals are used as natural food colourants and textile dyes. Marigold is established as one of the main commercial sources of natural carotenoids for the food, animal feed, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries. The growing consumer preference for natural over synthetic dyes has boosted the commercial significance of marigold-based pigments worldwide.
Economic importance of marigold cultivation
Marigold is one of the most economically viable flower crops in India. Its low input cost, short crop duration, and year-round demand make it an attractive option for smallholder farmers. The crop offers assured income – with initial investment of roughly โน1.5 lakh per acre, farmers can earn multiple harvests across three seasons. Market demand peaks during festive seasons like Diwali, Navratri, and wedding periods, when prices can increase significantly.
Beyond the fresh flower market, the growing industrial demand for marigold oleoresin (used in lutein extraction) has opened up new revenue streams for growers. India and China are the leading global producers of marigold for the lutein industry.
