Sheep, goats, and pigs form the backbone of small-scale livestock farming across India. For millions of rural households, these animals are not just a source of meat, milk, and wool – they’re a reliable source of income, nutrition, and employment. But profitable livestock rearing doesn’t happen by chance. It requires a solid understanding of animal care, nutrition, housing, and health management. Let’s break down the essential management practices every small-scale farmer should know for sheep, goats, and pigs.

Why sheep, goats, and pigs matter for small-scale farmers

India has one of the largest goat populations in the world, and around five million households are engaged in rearing small ruminants. Sheep and goats thrive in arid, semi-arid, and mountainous areas where crop farming or dairying may not be economically viable. They require relatively low investment and minimal land, making them ideal for landless labourers and marginal farmers. Pigs, on the other hand, have an exceptionally high feed-to-meat conversion ratio (65-80% dressed weight), which makes pig farming one of the most efficient livestock enterprises. The National Livestock Mission (NLM) by the Government of India actively supports entrepreneurship in sheep, goat, and pig farming through subsidies of up to 50% on project costs – making it easier than ever for farmers to start or expand their operations.

Sheep farming: management essentials

Sheep are valued for their meat, wool, skin, and manure. They are relatively easy to manage and can be maintained largely on natural grazing lands, wastelands, and crop stubble. However, proper management – especially around breeding, pregnancy, and health – is critical for a productive flock.

Care of pregnant and lactating ewes

Pregnant ewes need extra attention during the last six weeks of gestation, when the foetus grows rapidly. At this stage, farmers should provide a balanced diet rich in energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Concentrates like maize, barley, and oilseed cakes should supplement the regular grazing. Ewes that are underfed during late pregnancy are at risk of pregnancy toxaemia (twin lamb disease), a potentially fatal metabolic condition. After lambing, lactating ewes require increased nutrition – roughly 1.5 to 2 times their maintenance diet – to support adequate milk production for their lambs. Access to clean drinking water at all times is equally important.

Weaning lambs

Weaning is a critical management step. Lambs should receive colostrum (the first milk) within the first hour of birth, as it provides essential antibodies for disease resistance. Lambs are typically weaned between 60 and 90 days of age. The process should be gradual – reduce the time lambs spend with their mothers over a few days to minimise stress. Once weaned, lambs should have access to high-quality forage and a starter feed to support their continued growth.

Vaccination and parasite control in sheep

Disease prevention is far more cost-effective than treatment. A proper vaccination and health management schedule should cover the major diseases that affect sheep in India. Key vaccines include those for enterotoxaemia (overeating disease), peste des petits ruminants (PPR), foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS), and sheep pox. Vaccinations should ideally be administered before lambing, at weaning, and before the breeding season.

Internal parasites, especially Haemonchus contortus (barber pole worm), are a major cause of production losses. Regular deworming using drugs like fenbendazole or ivermectin is essential. The Government of India’s advisory on small ruminant production notes that the cost of deworming is minimal (around โ‚น40 per animal) while the expected economic gain exceeds โ‚น500 per animal. External parasites such as ticks and lice should be controlled through periodic dipping or spraying.

Goat farming: management essentials

Goats are often called the “poor man’s cow” for good reason. They are hardy, adaptable, and can survive on low-quality forage. They provide meat, milk, fibre, and skin, and their demand in India continues to grow steadily. Effective management of goats centres around nutrition, breeding care, weaning, and disease control.

Care of pregnant and lactating does

A pregnant doe needs a balanced diet enriched with energy, protein, and essential minerals, especially in the last 6-8 weeks of pregnancy when foetal growth is most rapid. Supplementary feeding with grains and legumes is recommended during this period. Undernutrition in late pregnancy can lead to pregnancy toxaemia or the birth of weak kids. After kidding, lactating does need increased rations to sustain milk production. Farmers should also ensure that the kidding area is clean, dry, and well-ventilated to reduce the risk of infection for both the mother and kids.

Weaning kids

Newborn kids must be given colostrum within the first half hour of birth, as it contains vital antibodies. After the first five days, kids should be gradually separated from the mother and allowed to suckle at fixed intervals – roughly once every six hours. Complete weaning is typically done at around 8-12 weeks of age. After weaning, kids should be offered quality forage, tree loppings, and a starter concentrate to support growth.

Vaccination and parasite control in goats

Goats are generally hardy, but intensive rearing with more animals in one place increases disease risk. According to Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s livestock extension, the major diseases to vaccinate against include PPR (yearly vaccination), FMD (first dose at three months, then every 4-6 months), enterotoxaemia (yearly, before monsoon), goat pox (yearly, optional), and haemorrhagic septicaemia (yearly, before the rainy season). Kids should be dewormed from one month of age and then monthly until six months. Regular treatment for ectoparasites (ticks, lice) through dipping or spraying is also important to protect both growth and skin quality.

Good hygiene practices – clean sheds, uncontaminated water, proper drainage, rotational grazing, and quarantine for newly purchased animals – go a long way in keeping the herd healthy.

Pig farming: management essentials

Pig farming is one of the fastest-growing livestock sectors in India, especially in the north-eastern states. Pigs are prolific breeders, grow rapidly, and can convert a wide range of feed materials – including kitchen waste, vegetable scraps, and grain by-products – into high-quality meat. However, success in pig farming depends heavily on scientific management, particularly around breeding, farrowing, and piglet care.

Care of pregnant sows

The gestation period in pigs is approximately 114-120 days. During pregnancy, sows must receive rations that supply sufficient nutrients for foetal growth and the mother’s maintenance. However, overfeeding should be avoided – overly fat sows tend to produce weak piglets and are more likely to crush them during farrowing. Ideally, sows should gain about 35 kg and gilts (first-time mothers) about 55 kg from breeding to farrowing. Pregnant sows housed in groups should be monitored to prevent fighting, which can cause abortion. About two weeks before the expected farrowing date, the sow should be moved to a clean, disinfected farrowing pen so she can settle in.

Farrowing management

The farrowing pen is critical. It should be well-bedded with clean straw or sawdust and equipped with guard rails (made of GI pipes, placed 20-25 cm from the ground and wall) to prevent the sow from accidentally crushing the piglets. A creep area – a small, warm space accessible only to the piglets – should be set up in one corner of the pen. Three to seven days before the expected farrowing date, the sow should be given a laxative, bulky ration with plenty of water and roughages (like sweet potato vine or green fodder) to prevent constipation during delivery.

During farrowing, a caretaker should be present to assist if needed. Normal farrowing may last a few hours, with piglets arriving at intervals. If the sow strains excessively or the gap between piglets exceeds 45 minutes, veterinary assistance should be sought.

Piglet care and weaning

Newborn piglets should receive colostrum within the first few hours of life – it provides crucial antibodies. Other immediate care includes clearing mucus from the nose and mouth, cutting the umbilical cord, and applying tincture iodine to prevent navel infection. Needle teeth should be clipped shortly after birth to prevent injury to the sow’s teats. Iron injections are recommended on the 4th and 14th day of life to prevent piglet anaemia, a common problem in intensive systems.

Piglets are typically weaned at 6-8 weeks of age. The sow should be separated from the litter for a few hours each day in the days leading up to weaning to reduce stress. After weaning, piglets should be transitioned from an 18% protein creep feed to a 16% protein grower ration over about two weeks. Deworming should be done about two weeks after weaning.

Vaccination and health management in pigs

Swine fever (hog cholera) is the most important disease to vaccinate against – piglets should receive the vaccine at around 30-35 days of age, with FMD vaccination at 42 days. Regular deworming is essential, as pigs are highly susceptible to internal parasites that can drastically reduce weight gain. Keeping the pigsty clean – ideally cleaned at least once a week – and providing proper drainage significantly reduce disease incidence. Ectoparasite control through regular treatment of skin infections is also important.

Housing requirements for all three species

Good housing protects animals from extreme weather, predators, and disease. While the specifics differ by species, some principles are universal: the shelter should be well-ventilated, dry, easy to clean, and provide adequate space per animal.

Sheep and goat housing

For sheep and goats, a simple open-sided shed with a raised floor (in high-rainfall areas) or a well-drained earth floor works well. Provide at least 1-1.5 sq. metres per adult animal. Separate pens should be available for pregnant and lactating animals, sick animals, and newly purchased stock (quarantine). Bedding material like straw or dried leaves helps keep animals warm during winters and should be changed regularly.

Pig housing

Pig pens should have a rough-finished, waterproof cement or stone floor with proper drainage for waste disposal. Under village conditions, pens of about 3m ร— 2.4m with an open yard of similar dimensions are recommended. Walls should be 1.2-1.5 metres high. Separate pens are needed for boars, dry sows, farrowing sows, and weaners. In summers, water sprinkling on roofs or shade provision helps prevent heat stress – pigs are highly sensitive to high temperatures.

Nutrition: the foundation of productive livestock farming

Regardless of species, nutrition is the single biggest factor influencing growth, reproduction, and disease resistance. Underfed animals produce less, breed poorly, and fall sick more often.

Sheep and goats can largely be maintained on natural grazing – grasses, crop residues, tree loppings, and browse. However, supplementary feeding with concentrates (grains, oilseed cakes, mineral mixtures) is essential during pregnancy, lactation, and growth phases. Access to mineral licks or a mineral supplement helps prevent deficiencies.

Pigs require a more structured feeding programme. Standard rations are formulated for different life stages – creep/starter feed (up to 15-20 kg body weight), grower feed (up to 50 kg), and finisher feed (up to 70 kg). While many farmers in India rely on kitchen waste, hotel scraps, and bakery waste, these should ideally be used as partial replacements within a balanced ration rather than as the sole feed source. A ration containing 50-60% maize, 10-15% wheat, and 15-22% soyabean meal forms a good base.

Government support and financial assistance

The Indian government provides significant support for small-scale livestock farmers. Under the National Livestock Mission, subsidies of up to 50% (maximum โ‚น50 lakh) are available for establishing sheep and goat breeding units or pig farming enterprises. The scheme targets individuals, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and Section 8 companies. It also covers breed improvement infrastructure and fodder development. Farmers can apply online through the NLM portal on the Udyami Mitra platform.
