Rice is, without question, one of the most important food crops on the planet. It serves as the primary source of calories and nutrition for over half the world’s population, with billions of people across Asia, Africa, and Latin America depending on it daily. In India especially, rice is not just a crop – it is a way of life, deeply woven into the country’s food security, rural economy, and cultural identity. Whether it is steamed white rice in the south, biryani in the north, or puffed rice in the east, this single grain sustains a nation of over 1.4 billion people. Understanding rice cultivation – where it grows, how it is classified, and which varieties perform best – is essential for anyone studying Indian agriculture.

Why rice matters globally and in India
Rice, wheat, and maize together supply more than 50% of all calories consumed by the human population. Among the three, rice stands out because about 85% of its total production goes directly to human consumption, compared to 72% for wheat and just 19% for maize. In Asia alone, more than 2 billion people get 60 to 70% of their daily caloric intake from rice and its products.
India holds a special position in the global rice economy. The country is now the largest producer of rice in the world, surpassing China for the first time in 2024-25. According to USDA estimates, India harvested a record 147 million metric tons of rice in marketing year 2024-25. The Indian government’s own final estimates for the same crop year put total production at approximately 150.18 million tonnes, a significant jump from 137.82 million tonnes the previous year.
Area under rice cultivation and distribution in India
India has the largest area of land under rice cultivation in the world. In the crop year 2024-25, the total area under rice stood at around 51.27 million hectares. This makes rice the most extensively grown food crop in the country, covering diverse agro-climatic zones from the Indo-Gangetic plains to the coastal deltas of the south and east.
Rice cultivation in India spans three cropping seasons: kharif (monsoon), rabi (winter), and a smaller summer (zaid) crop. The kharif season accounts for the bulk of production – roughly 83% of India’s total rice output. Rabi rice contributes about 10%, and the summer crop makes up the rest.
Top rice-producing states
The distribution of rice production across Indian states has seen notable shifts in recent years. Based on the latest final estimates for 2024-25:
Uttar Pradesh is now the largest rice-producing state in India with 20.76 million tonnes, followed by Telangana at 17.45 million tonnes and West Bengal at 16.02 million tonnes. Punjab comes in fourth at 14.36 million tonnes, with Chhattisgarh (10.37 million tonnes) and Odisha (9.53 million tonnes) rounding out the top six.
It is worth noting that many older references still list West Bengal as the top producer. However, recent data confirms that Uttar Pradesh has overtaken it, driven by increased area under paddy, better irrigation coverage, and adoption of improved varieties.
Highest rice productivity: Punjab leads
While Uttar Pradesh leads in total output, Punjab records the highest rice productivity in the country at approximately 4,428 kg per hectare. This is well above the national average of around 2,929 kg per hectare. Punjab’s high productivity is the result of assured irrigation through an extensive canal network, mechanised farming practices, and strong adoption of high-yielding varieties. Andhra Pradesh and Haryana also show impressive yields per hectare.
Botanical classification of rice
Rice belongs to the genus Oryza, which contains over 20 wild species and two cultivated species. The two cultivated species are:
Oryza sativa – the Asian cultivated rice, which accounts for nearly all global rice production. It was first domesticated in the Yangtze River basin in China roughly 8,000 to 13,500 years ago.
Oryza glaberrima – the African cultivated rice, grown in limited areas of West Africa. It originated from the wild species O. barthii and has largely been replaced by higher-yielding O. sativa varieties in many regions.
Oryza sativa is the species of primary commercial and agricultural importance worldwide, and it is the species that dominates Indian rice farming.
Three ecotypes of Oryza sativa
Oryza sativa is further classified into three main ecotypes – indica, japonica, and javanica – each adapted to different climatic conditions and geographic regions. This classification was first proposed based on morphological differences and later supported by genetic and molecular studies.
Indica
Indica rice is the most widely grown ecotype, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions including India, Southeast Asia, and parts of Africa. The plants tend to be taller, with long, slender grains. Indica varieties are generally more drought-tolerant, making them suitable for areas with irregular rainfall. Most of the rice grown in India – from common paddy to aromatic basmati – belongs to the indica group. These varieties are used in everyday dishes like steamed rice, biryani, and fried rice.
Japonica
Japonica rice is primarily cultivated in temperate zones – Japan, Korea, northern China, and parts of Europe and the Americas. The grains are short, round, and sticky when cooked, making japonica rice ideal for sushi, rice bowls, and other East Asian dishes. Japonica plants are generally shorter and more robust, with better resistance to lodging (falling over in windy conditions). This ecotype is less drought-tolerant but performs well in areas with consistent rainfall and cooler temperatures.
Javanica (tropical japonica)
Javanica rice – now more commonly referred to as tropical japonica – is grown in specific regions such as parts of Indonesia and Madagascar. The grains are medium to long, and the plants are intermediate in height between indica and japonica types. Javanica varieties have moderate drought tolerance and are adapted to the unique climatic conditions of these tropical island environments. Genetically, javanica is closely related to japonica and is considered a subgroup within it by many modern researchers.
Climate and rainfall requirements for rice
Rice is fundamentally a tropical crop that thrives in hot and humid conditions. The ideal temperature range during the growing season is 20ยฐC to 37ยฐC, with 25ยฐC to 30ยฐC being optimal for most growth stages.
The crop grows best in areas with an annual rainfall of 1,000 to 1,500 mm, well-distributed across the growing period. Adequate water is critical – rice fields are typically flooded for much of the crop’s life cycle. In fact, rice cultivation accounts for 34% to 43% of the world’s total irrigation water use.
In India, the southwest monsoon (June to September) provides the bulk of the water needed for kharif rice. States with strong monsoon rainfall and access to irrigation – such as West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab – are naturally suited for large-scale rice cultivation. In drier regions, irrigation from canals, tube wells, and dam projects (like Telangana’s Kaleshwaram project) makes year-round rice farming possible.
Recommended rice varieties in India
India’s vast diversity of agro-climatic zones means that no single rice variety works everywhere. Over the decades, Indian agricultural research institutions – particularly the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Indian Institute of Rice Research (IIRR), and various state agricultural universities – have developed and recommended specific varieties and hybrids for different states.
Key hybrid varieties
Pusa RH 10 is among the most notable hybrid rice varieties in India. Developed by IARI, it is recognised as the world’s first superfine-grained aromatic rice hybrid. It combines high yield potential with excellent grain quality and is widely recommended for cultivation in states like Haryana and parts of Uttar Pradesh, where the rice-wheat cropping system demands quick-maturing varieties.
Pant Sankar Dhan 1, developed by G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, is another important hybrid recommended by the Uttar Pradesh agriculture department. Along with Pant Sankar Dhan 3, Narendra Sankar Dhan 2, and other hybrids, it is promoted for cultivation in the state and in the tarai region of Uttarakhand.
Other important varieties
Beyond hybrids, several high-yielding and specialty varieties are recommended across states:
Pusa Basmati 1121 and Pusa Basmati 1509 are leading basmati rice varieties from IARI, widely grown in Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh. Pusa Basmati 1509, in particular, matures about 30 days earlier than 1121 and helps farmers save water and prepare fields for the rabi wheat crop.
Samba Mahsuri (BPT 5204) remains one of the most popular medium-duration varieties in southern and eastern India, known for its fine grain quality. Its improved version, DRR Dhan 100 (Kamala), developed by the Indian Institute of Rice Research, matures 20 days earlier and offers higher yields.
Swarna and IR 36 are widely grown across the eastern and central states. Jeeraga Samba holds a special place in Tamil Nadu for its small, aromatic grains used in traditional South Indian cuisine. In the northeast, local varieties adapted to deep-water and upland conditions continue to be cultivated alongside modern releases.
The selection of varieties also depends on the ecosystem – whether the field is irrigated, rainfed, upland, or prone to flooding. Climate-smart varieties like CR Dhan 108 (for early direct-seeded rice systems in eastern India) and Pusa DST Rice 1 (for drought and saline conditions) represent the next generation of rice cultivars developed to address specific environmental challenges.
India’s evolving role in global rice trade
India’s dominance in rice extends beyond production. The country is the world’s largest rice exporter. In 2024-25, Indian rice exports were estimated at a record 24.5 million tons. This is notable because India had placed restrictions on rice exports in 2023 following a delayed monsoon, which briefly pushed global rice prices higher. Once the 2024 crop proved better than expected and stocks rebuilt, exports resumed at full pace.
India’s competitive edge in the global market comes from a combination of large production volumes, government support through minimum support prices and input subsidies, and a diverse portfolio of rice types – from low-cost parboiled rice to premium basmati. This makes developments in Indian rice cultivation relevant not just domestically, but for global food security.
Challenges and the road ahead
Despite impressive production numbers, Indian rice farming faces real challenges. Water scarcity is a growing concern – rice is an extremely water-intensive crop, and groundwater levels in major producing states like Punjab and Haryana are declining. Methane emissions from flooded paddy fields contribute significantly to greenhouse gases, with rice accounting for roughly 10-12% of global methane emissions.
Climate change is also altering monsoon patterns, making rainfall less predictable. To sustain and grow rice production, India needs a combination of water-efficient cultivation methods (such as alternate wetting and drying), climate-resilient varieties, and better post-harvest infrastructure to reduce losses.
