This climatic diversity is the reason India ranks as the second-largest fruit producer in the world, cultivating everything from temperate apples to tropical bananas. In 2024-25, India’s total fruit production reached an estimated 117.65 million tonnes, a clear indicator of the sector’s growing strength. Why India’s climate is perfect for fruit cultivation
India stretches from roughly 8ยฐN to 37ยฐN latitude, creating a natural gradient of climatic conditions. The northern mountains experience harsh winters with snowfall, while the southern peninsula enjoys warm, humid weather year-round. Between these extremes lie subtropical plains, semi-arid plateaus, and coastal belts – each with a distinct temperature range, rainfall pattern, and soil type.
This variation is not just a geographical fact – it directly determines which fruits can be grown where. Temperate fruits like apples need prolonged winter cold (called chilling hours) to break dormancy, while tropical fruits like mango and banana cannot tolerate frost at all. Subtropical fruits fall somewhere in between, handling mild winters but needing warm summers. India’s landscape accommodates all three categories, which is why the country produces such an extraordinary diversity of fruits.
India’s six horticultural zones for fruit production
To plan fruit cultivation effectively, India is divided into six horticultural zones based on climatic conditions. Each zone has its own set of recommended fruits, soil types, and growing practices.
Temperate zone
This zone covers the high-altitude regions of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, parts of Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and the Nilgiri and Palani hills in Tamil Nadu. Winters are long and cold, with frost and snowfall being common. The soil tends to be shallow and acidic, with adequate rainfall. Fruit plants here enter dormancy during winter and need a certain number of chilling hours to resume growth in spring. The major fruits grown are apple, pear, walnut, almond, plum, peach, cherry, and strawberry. This zone is the backbone of India’s apple and dry fruit production.
North-western subtropical zone
Covering Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, this zone has hot, dry summers and brief, mild winters. Temperatures are intermediate – chilling occurs only for short spells. The soil is generally sandy loam to alluvial, and rainfall varies widely. Fruits grown here include mango, guava, ber (Indian jujube), date palm, aonla (Indian gooseberry), and citrus varieties like kinnow. Punjab’s kinnow belt is one of the most commercially important citrus-growing areas in the country.
North-eastern subtropical zone
This zone encompasses Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, parts of Arunachal Pradesh, and parts of West Bengal. The climate is warm and humid with moderate to high rainfall. It is well suited for fruits like litchi, banana, pineapple, citrus (especially oranges and lemons), jackfruit, and guava. The Muzaffarpur district of Bihar, for instance, is synonymous with litchi production in India.
Central tropical zone
Spanning parts of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Orissa, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, this zone experiences distinct wet and dry seasons with high temperatures for most of the year. The soil types include black cotton soil, alluvial, and laterite. This zone is known for excellent mango varieties, cashew, banana, citrus, sapota (chiku), and papaya. The dry period in this region is actually beneficial – it helps with fruit maturation and sugar concentration in crops like mango.
Southern tropical zone
Covering parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, this zone enjoys relatively stable temperatures throughout the year, making it suitable for continuous fruit production. Both the south-west and north-east monsoons bring rainfall here. Major fruits include banana, grape, mango, coconut, pineapple, and breadfruit. The diverse soil types – from red loam to black soil – support everything from plantain cultivation to table grape farming.
Coastal tropical humid zone
This zone stretches along the coasts of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal, and includes the Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands. It has high humidity, consistent temperatures, and heavy rainfall. Fruits that thrive here are banana, coconut, cashew, pineapple, mango, and jackfruit. The consistent moisture and warmth make this zone ideal for tropical fruits that love humidity.
Major fruits produced in India
While India grows dozens of fruit species, a handful dominate the production landscape. Here is a look at the most significant ones.
Mango
Often called the king of fruits, mango occupies the largest share of India’s fruit cultivation area – roughly 35% of the total area under fruits. India is the world’s largest mango producer. In 2024-25, mango production was projected at approximately 22.8 million tonnes. The fruit is grown across tropical and subtropical zones, with major producing states being Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu. Popular varieties include Alphonso, Dasheri, Langra, Banganapalli, and Totapuri.
Banana
Banana is India’s highest-produced fruit by volume. In 2024-25, banana output was estimated at around 38 million tonnes. It is primarily a tropical crop but can also be grown in frost-free subtropical areas. Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka are the leading banana-producing states. Commercially important varieties include Grand Naine, Robusta, Dwarf Cavendish, Poovan, and Rasthali. Banana’s quick turnaround time – typically 12 to 14 months from planting to harvest – makes it economically attractive for farmers.
Citrus fruits
India’s citrus production includes oranges (mandarin), sweet oranges (mosambi), lemons, limes, and kinnow. Total citrus output exceeds 12 million tonnes annually. Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, and Rajasthan are key citrus states. The Nagpur mandarin from Maharashtra and kinnow from Punjab are among the most commercially significant varieties. Citrus fruits are adaptable – they grow well in subtropical climates but can also be cultivated under certain temperate conditions.
Apple
Apple is India’s premier temperate fruit. According to the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, India’s apple production in 2024-25 was forecast at about 2.55 million metric tonnes, a 6% increase over the previous year due to favourable weather. Jammu & Kashmir contributes the bulk of India’s apple crop, followed by Himachal Pradesh. In recent years, the development of low-chilling apple varieties has allowed limited cultivation even in lower-altitude areas of Uttarakhand and the north-eastern hills.
Grape
Grape is primarily a temperate fruit, but in India, it is successfully grown under subtropical and tropical conditions – particularly in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. The USDA estimates Indian grape production at about 3.06 million metric tonnes for 2024-25. Maharashtra’s Nashik district is the country’s grape capital, known for both table grapes and wine production. India has also developed a growing grape export market, with Thompson Seedless and Sharad Seedless being popular export varieties.
Other important fruits
Beyond the big five, several other fruits contribute significantly to India’s total output. Guava is widely grown across Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar. Papaya thrives in tropical zones, with Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka as top producers. Pomegranate has emerged as a major commercial crop in Maharashtra. Litchi is a specialty of Bihar and West Bengal. Watermelon production has also been increasing steadily, with output rising to over 44 lakh tonnes in 2024-25.
India’s fruit production: the numbers
India’s fruit production has been on a consistent upward trajectory. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, fruit output grew from 110.21 million tonnes in 2022-23 to an estimated 112.08 million tonnes in 2023-24. By 2024-25, production rose further to an estimated 117.65 million tonnes – a 4.13% increase over the previous year. This increase was driven primarily by higher output of banana, mango, mandarin, papaya, guava, and watermelon.
For 2025-26, the first advance estimates project fruit production at around 118.68 million tonnes, with total horticulture output expected to cross 370 million tonnes. These numbers place India firmly as one of the world’s top fruit-producing nations, second only to China in total volume.
What is driving this growth?
Several factors have contributed to the steady increase in India’s fruit production over the past two decades.
Improved varieties and planting material
Agricultural research institutes across India – particularly those under ICAR – have developed high-yielding, disease-resistant varieties suited to specific climatic zones. Tissue culture propagation, especially for banana, has ensured uniform planting material and higher productivity. The development of dwarf fruit tree varieties has also made orchard management easier and more cost-effective.
Modern irrigation and farming techniques
The adoption of drip irrigation and fertigation has expanded fruit cultivation into areas that previously lacked reliable water sources. Precision agriculture tools, including soil testing and satellite-based crop monitoring, help farmers optimise inputs. These methods not only improve yield but also reduce water and fertiliser waste.
Post-harvest infrastructure
One of the persistent challenges in Indian fruit production has been post-harvest losses, estimated at 15-30% depending on the crop. To address this, the government and private sector have expanded cold storage capacity, pack houses, and controlled-atmosphere storage facilities. Improved rural road connectivity and refrigerated transport have also helped reduce spoilage and widen market access.
Government programmes and policy support
Schemes like the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) provide financial assistance for establishing new orchards, drip irrigation systems, and post-harvest units. The National Horticulture Board (NHB) also supports cold chain development and market linkages. These initiatives have been instrumental in bringing more area under fruit cultivation and improving farmer incomes.
Challenges facing Indian fruit production
Despite impressive production numbers, challenges remain. Climate change is disrupting traditional growing seasons – erratic rainfall, unseasonal frost, and rising temperatures are affecting fruit quality and yield in several zones. Apple-growing regions in Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, for example, have reported declining chilling hours, which directly impacts fruit set.
Post-harvest losses continue to be a concern, especially for perishable fruits like banana, papaya, and grapes, where gaps in the cold chain still exist in many rural areas. Pest and disease management also remains a challenge, with outbreaks of fruit fly, anthracnose, and bacterial blight affecting crops regularly.
Additionally, small and fragmented landholdings make it difficult for many farmers to invest in modern technology or access organised markets. While Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and contract farming are helping bridge this gap, much more progress is needed.
The road ahead
India’s fruit sector is poised for further growth. Increasing domestic demand – driven by urbanisation, rising incomes, and greater health awareness – creates a strong market pull. At the same time, India’s exports of fresh fruits like grapes, mangoes, and pomegranates are growing, opening up international revenue streams for farmers.
Emerging crops like dragon fruit, kiwi, avocado, and blueberry are gaining traction in niche markets and non-traditional growing areas. With continued investment in research, infrastructure, and farmer support, India’s position as a global fruit production leader is only set to strengthen.
