For entrepreneurs, satellite nurseries are especially attractive because they can be started on limited land, including backyards and terraces. Demand for nursery products has expanded beyond orchards and parks into high-rise buildings, offices, factories, hospitals, hotels, roadsides, and rooftops. The recurring revenue from rental contracts gives the nursery owner a predictable income stream. In cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, plant rental services are in high demand from corporate offices, co-working spaces, hotels, and event venues.

Essential oil extraction from flowers

Essential oils extracted from flowers are among the most valuable products in the floriculture value chain. Ornamental plants like rose, jasmine, and tuberose, apart from their decorative value, also yield high-grade aromatic essential oils used in perfumery, pharmaceuticals, and aromatherapy. The global essential oil market is expanding rapidly – industry reports predict it will reach USD 27.5 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of over 8.5%.

Key flowers used for oil extraction

Rose (Rosa damascena): Rose oil, commonly known as rose otto or rose attar, is one of the most expensive essential oils in the world. It is extracted primarily through steam distillation or solvent extraction. Major rose oil-producing regions in India include Kannauj (Uttar Pradesh) and parts of Rajasthan. Rose oil is used extensively in perfumery, cosmetics, and traditional Ayurvedic formulations.

Jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum and Jasminum sambac): Jasmine oil is valued for its sweet, intense fragrance and therapeutic properties. Over 20,000 farmers in India cultivate jasmine, with around 80,000 to 100,000 people involved in the picking activity alone. The oil is typically obtained as a “concrete” through solvent extraction, which is then processed into an “absolute” – a concentrated aromatic product used in high-end perfumes.

Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa): Tuberose concrete is another sought-after product, prized for its heady fragrance. It finds applications in the fragrance industry and luxury cosmetic formulations.

Extraction methods entrepreneurs should know

The choice of extraction method depends on the flower type, the scale of operation, and the end product desired. The main methods include:

Steam distillation is the most traditional approach, where flowers are placed in a still with water and heated. The steam carries the volatile essential oil, which is then condensed and separated. This method works well for roses and some other hardier florals.

Solvent extraction uses chemical solvents like hexane to dissolve the aromatic compounds from delicate flowers such as jasmine, which cannot withstand the heat of distillation. The result is a waxy “concrete,” which is further treated with alcohol to yield the pure absolute.

Supercritical COβ‚‚ extraction is a modern technique that uses pressurised carbon dioxide to pull out essential oils. It produces high-purity oil without solvent residues, but the equipment cost is significantly higher.

For entrepreneurs starting out, steam distillation units are the most affordable and can be set up at the village or district level. Registering with associations like EOAI (Essential Oil Association of India) or APEDA can help build credibility and market access.

Aromatherapy: where floriculture meets wellness

Aromatherapy – the use of essential oils from plants for therapeutic purposes – has become a significant consumer market worldwide. Flower-derived essential oils like lavender, rose, jasmine, and chamomile are at the core of aromatherapy practice. The domestic demand for essential oils in India is increasing sharply, thanks to rising disposable incomes, the growth of the wellness and spa industries, and a return to traditional remedies.

Entrepreneurial opportunities in aromatherapy

Product development: Entrepreneurs can create branded aromatherapy products such as diffuser oils, massage blends, bath oils, scented candles, and pillow sprays using flower-based essential oils. The shift towards natural, chemical-free personal care products is a strong tailwind for this segment.

Spa and wellness services: Setting up an aromatherapy studio or partnering with spas, yoga centres, and wellness retreats to supply customised essential oil blends is another avenue. India’s booming wellness tourism industry adds further demand.

Dry flower production: low investment, high returns

Dried flowers have emerged as a rapidly growing niche in the floriculture industry. Unlike fresh flowers that wilt in days, dried flowers last for months or even years, making them ideal for home dΓ©cor, wedding arrangements, craft projects, and gifting. India holds a strong position in global dry flower exports, shipping over 500 varieties to 20 countries including the USA, Japan, Europe, and the Middle East.

How the dry flower business works

The process starts with selecting the right flower varieties. Flowers with firm petals and vibrant colours – such as gomphrena, statice, strawflower, marigold, globe amaranth, roses, and chrysanthemum – are best suited for drying. Harvesting is done at the right stage, just before the flowers fully bloom, for the best results.

Drying methods include air drying (hanging bunches upside down in a shaded, well-ventilated space), pressing (between sheets or wooden frames), silica gel drying (for delicate flowers that need to retain their shape), and solar drying using specially designed dryers. Entrepreneurs like Shivraj Nishad from Kanpur have built thriving businesses using solar dryers to dehydrate local flowers, employing over 100 farmers and offering 15 varieties of dried flower products.

The dried flowers are then arranged, coloured (if desired), and packaged for sale. Products range from simple dried bunches and potpourri to elaborate wreaths, bouquets, shadow boxes, and framed arrangements.

Why this avenue is attractive for new entrepreneurs

Dried flower farming requires very little space, minimal water, and no expensive inputs, making it a perfect supplementary activity for small and marginal farmers. Much of the processing work can be done indoors, which makes it especially suitable for women, self-help groups, and rural youth seeking a year-round livelihood. The gross margins for the dried flower business are typically around 65%, making it a financially rewarding venture.

The e-commerce boom has further opened doors. Entrepreneurs can sell dried flower products on platforms like Amazon, Etsy, and social media channels without needing a physical retail store.

Natural dyes from flowers: the sustainable frontier

The growing global demand for eco-friendly and chemical-free products has brought natural dyes derived from flowers into the spotlight. Synthetic dyes used in textiles and food have faced increasing scrutiny over health and environmental concerns. Natural flower-based pigments offer a sustainable alternative.

Flowers commonly used for natural dyes

Marigold (Tagetes erecta): Produces bright yellow and orange pigments. Marigold-derived lutein is also used as a food colouring agent.

Extracting natural dyes typically involves harvesting plant materials at the peak of colour intensity, processing them through boiling, soaking, or fermentation, and then applying the extracted dye to textiles, paper, or other materials. The dyes find applications in the textile industry (especially handloom and organic clothing), food and beverage sector, cosmetics, and art supplies.

Entrepreneurs across India are turning discarded flowers into value-added products, including natural dyes, pigments, soaps, candles, incense sticks, and handmade paper. This “flower waste upcycling” approach addresses both the environmental problem of floral waste (particularly from temples and events) and creates a profitable business from material that would otherwise end up in landfills.

Employment generation and the bigger picture

Each of these entrepreneurial avenues contributes meaningfully to job creation. The floriculture sector supports over 1.5 million jobs in India, with women making up 60% of the workforce. Ancillary activities – packaging, logistics, product formulation, and marketing – further multiply employment opportunities.

The Government of India has identified floriculture as a sunrise industry and has accorded it 100% export-oriented status. Through initiatives like the CSIR Floriculture Mission, the government is actively promoting agro-technologies, new varieties, and value addition technologies to boost farmer and entrepreneur incomes. India’s floriculture exports have grown from Rs. 1,600 crore in FY21 to Rs. 2,000 crore in FY25 , reflecting the sector’s momentum.

The concept of integrated “Flori-Malls” – as envisioned by policymakers – is especially worth noting. These are integrated facilities with cold chain infrastructure, essential oil extraction units, pigment extraction facilities, and vermicompost units, helping farmers turn excess flowers into products like dyes, gulkand, and dry flowers. Such models demonstrate how multiple entrepreneurial avenues within floriculture can be combined for maximum impact.

Getting started: practical tips for aspiring entrepreneurs

If you’re considering entrepreneurship in floriculture, here are some practical starting points:

Identify your niche: Assess your local market, available resources, and personal interests. A satellite nursery may suit someone in an urban area, while essential oil extraction may be better for someone in a jasmine- or rose-growing belt like Tamil Nadu or Uttar Pradesh.

Start small, scale gradually: Most of these avenues – especially dry flowers, nurseries, and aromatherapy product lines – can be started with modest investment. Test your product-market fit before committing to large-scale infrastructure.

Leverage government schemes: Under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), subsidies of up to β‚Ή56 lakh are available for protected cultivation and β‚Ή50.75 lakh for cold storage facilities. The National Horticulture Board also provides financial support for larger projects.

Build market linkages: Whether you’re selling dried flowers on e-commerce platforms, supplying essential oils to perfumers, or offering plant rental services to corporates, having reliable buyers is crucial. Trade fairs, APEDA-facilitated export channels, and online marketplaces can all help.

Invest in quality and training: Attend workshops, connect with agricultural universities, and explore training offered under the CSIR Floriculture Mission. Knowledge of proper extraction techniques, drying methods, and plant care will set you apart from competitors.
