India’s poultry sector has grown from a backyard activity into one of the most organised segments of animal agriculture. Whether it is the broiler bird that reaches your plate in weeks or the layer hen that produces eggs for over a year, poultry farming relies on a careful balance of breed selection, housing, nutrition, and disease management. Understanding these systems and practices is essential for anyone entering or studying this fast-growing industry.

Why poultry farming matters in India
The Indian poultry sector is valued at over INR 1,750 billion and employs more than six million people directly or indirectly. The industry has been expanding at roughly 7-8% annually, well above the overall agricultural growth rate of around 2.5%. Rising urbanisation, increasing disposable incomes, and growing awareness of protein nutrition have all fuelled this expansion. Per capita egg consumption in India currently sits at about 79 eggs per year, and chicken meat consumption at around 5 kg – both figures still well below the ICMR-recommended levels of 180 eggs and 10.8 kg of poultry meat annually. That gap between current consumption and the nutritional recommendation represents an enormous market opportunity.
Broiler farming: meat production at speed
Broiler farming focuses entirely on raising chickens for meat. These birds are bred specifically for rapid weight gain and efficient feed conversion. A typical broiler reaches a market weight of 1.5-2.0 kg in just 6 to 8 weeks, making the production cycle remarkably short. Farmers can potentially raise 6-7 batches per year from the same facility, which maximises return on investment.
Popular broiler breeds
Commercial broiler breeds in India include Cobb, Hubbard, Vencobb, and Krishibro. These are genetically selected for high growth rate and superior feed-to-meat conversion. There are also dual-purpose breeds such as Rhode Island Red, Gramapriya, and Vanaraja that serve both egg and meat production – these are especially popular in backyard and rural farming setups.
Broiler management cycle
The broiler rearing cycle begins with procuring day-old chicks from certified hatcheries. Chicks are first placed in a brooding house where temperature is carefully maintained – typically around 35ยฐC in the first week, then gradually reduced. Feed quality is critical: feed alone accounts for 65-70% of total broiler production cost. A standard broiler feed programme moves through starter, grower, and finisher rations, each formulated to meet the bird’s changing nutritional needs. By week 6-8, the birds are ready for market.
Layer farming: the economics of egg production
Layer farming is the other major pillar of the Indian poultry industry. Unlike broilers, layer hens are raised over a much longer production cycle – typically 72 to 78 weeks – during which a good layer bird can produce 280-320 eggs. The operational approach, breed selection, and housing requirements differ significantly from broiler production.
Layer production phases
The layer cycle has three distinct stages. Brooding (0-8 weeks) involves nurturing chicks with controlled heat, balanced starter feed, and early vaccinations. Growing (8-18 weeks) is the development phase where pullets are prepared through specific nutrition and lighting programmes for the onset of egg laying. Laying (18-72+ weeks) is the productive phase. Hens typically start laying around 18-22 weeks of age, reach peak production at about 32-35 weeks, and then gradually decline. Once productivity drops below an economically viable level, spent hens are culled and sold for meat.
Common layer breeds
White Leghorn is the most widely used commercial layer breed in India, known for its high egg output and excellent feed efficiency. BV-300, Hy-Line, and Lohmann are other popular commercial strains. For backyard or semi-intensive settings, indigenous or improved breeds like Gramapriya and Kadaknath are also used.
Poultry farming systems: from backyard to intensive
Poultry farming in India exists on a wide spectrum. At one end are small backyard operations with a handful of birds; at the other are large commercial farms housing 50,000 birds or more under controlled conditions. The choice of system depends on the scale of operation, available capital, and the type of product being targeted.
Free-range and backyard systems
In the free-range system, birds roam freely during the day and return to a simple shelter at night. This is the oldest form of poultry keeping and is still practised by around 36 million farmers in India for supplementary income and family nutrition. Birds scavenge for much of their food – seeds, insects, and herbage – with some hand-feeding. Investment is minimal, but so is the output per bird. These systems are especially relevant for rural poverty alleviation and household food security.
Deep litter system
The deep litter system is a popular intensive floor-based housing method. In this system, birds are kept entirely indoors on a floor covered with 10-15 cm of absorbent litter material such as paddy husk, sawdust, wood shavings, or groundnut hulls. As the litter gets soiled, fresh material is added on top without removing the old layer. Over time, the litter builds up to a significant depth.
The decomposition process within the litter generates heat and produces beneficial bacteria. Research has shown that deep litter can help poultry fight off coccidiosis, a common parasitic disease that historically caused around 20% mortality. The decomposed litter also serves as an excellent organic fertiliser.
However, the system demands careful management. Ventilation is essential to prevent ammonia build-up, and regular stirring of the litter keeps it dry and friable. Respiratory issues and parasitic infections can occur if the litter becomes damp or compacted. The deep litter system is widely used for both broiler and layer production, though it is more common for broilers in India.
Cage system (battery cage)
The cage system – also known as the Californian cage system or battery cage system – is the most widely used housing method for commercial layer farms. Birds are kept in small wire compartments with feed and water provided from outside. Eggs roll out onto a collection tray, reducing breakage and contamination. A single layer bird requires about 0.6 to 0.65 sq. ft of cage space.
The key advantages of cage systems include high stocking density, clean egg production, easy detection of sick or non-productive birds, and minimal feed wastage. Automated feeding, watering, and egg collection further improve labour efficiency. However, the initial investment is substantially higher than floor-based systems, and there are growing concerns around animal welfare due to restricted movement. Cage systems are most prevalent for layer operations, where they dominate commercial production in India.
Slatted floor and combination systems
Some farms use slatted floor systems where birds stand on wire or wooden slats that allow droppings to fall through to a collection area below. Others use a combination of slats and litter (slat-cum-litter system) to balance the benefits of both approaches. These systems offer higher stocking densities than pure deep litter while still allowing birds more freedom of movement than cages.
Nutrition and feed management
Feed is the single largest cost component in poultry farming, accounting for 75-80% of total production cost in layers and 65-70% in broilers. Getting the feed right is therefore not just a biological necessity – it directly determines profitability.
Poultry rations are typically based on maize as the primary energy source and soybean meal as the main protein source. These two ingredients together drive the cost of compounded feed, making the industry sensitive to fluctuations in grain prices. Commercially formulated feeds are available as mash, pellets, or crumbles. Pelletised feed generally improves feed conversion efficiency because birds waste less while eating.
Different production stages require different nutrient compositions. Broiler starter feed (0-2 weeks) contains about 22-23% crude protein, which is gradually reduced in grower and finisher rations. Layer feeds are formulated with higher calcium content (3.5-4%) to support eggshell formation. Supplements such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and coccidiostats are routinely added.
Health management and vaccination
Disease outbreaks can devastate a poultry operation. The Indian poultry industry has faced estimated annual losses of around โน25,000 crore due to disease-related mortality, reduced productivity, and treatment costs. A solid health management plan rests on three pillars: biosecurity, vaccination, and good management practices.
Vaccination schedule
Vaccination is the frontline defence against major poultry diseases. Common vaccines administered in Indian poultry farms include those for Marek’s disease (at the hatchery), Newcastle disease (ND), Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD or Gumboro), Infectious Bronchitis (IB), and fowl pox. The timing and frequency of vaccination varies by region and disease prevalence, so consultation with a local veterinarian is essential. As noted by Poultry India, farmers should always request vaccination certificates when purchasing chicks or pullets.
Biosecurity: the cheapest form of disease control
Biosecurity refers to the set of management and physical measures designed to reduce the risk of disease introduction and spread. According to Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s expert guidelines, biosecurity is the most cost-effective disease control measure available, and no prevention programme will work without it.
Practical biosecurity measures include fencing the farm perimeter, controlling visitor and vehicle access, maintaining an all-in-all-out system for batches, chlorinating drinking water, disposing of dead birds scientifically, and keeping a vegetation-free zone of at least three metres around poultry buildings. In 2015, the Indian government released formal guidelines advising both state and private poultry farmers to adopt biosecurity protocols, and the more recent Poultry Disease Action Plan 2024 has further strengthened these recommendations.
Common poultry diseases in India
Some of the most significant diseases affecting Indian poultry include Newcastle disease (Ranikhet disease), Avian Influenza, Infectious Bursal Disease, coccidiosis, Marek’s disease, and salmonellosis. Backyard flocks are particularly vulnerable to Newcastle disease and Avian Influenza due to a lack of biosecurity and proper vaccination. Early detection, isolation of sick birds, and prompt veterinary intervention are critical for minimising losses.
The role of the integrator model
A distinctive feature of India’s commercial poultry industry is the integrator model. Large integrator companies control the entire production chain – from breeding and hatcheries to feed supply, veterinary support, and marketing. They provide contract farmers with day-old chicks, feed, medicines, and technical guidance, and buy back the finished birds. This model has been central to the growth of the Indian broiler industry, enabling small-scale farmers to participate in commercial production without bearing the full cost and market risk.
However, the integrator model operates on thin margins. Feed costs consume 60-70% of expenses, and the volatility of maize and soybean prices keeps profitability under pressure. Disputes over pricing and payment delays between integrators and contract farmers remain ongoing challenges.
Water quality: an often-overlooked factor
Water quality can make or break flock health, yet it is one of the most commonly neglected areas in poultry management. Both the microbial and mineral quality of water must be tested before setting up a farm. Contaminated water is a direct route for spreading diseases like salmonellosis and colibacillosis. Chlorination – adding 5-8 grams of bleaching powder per 1,000 litres – is the simplest and cheapest method to sanitise drinking water for poultry. Maintaining a pH of 6.8-7.5 and ensuring zero coliform count at the point of delivery are basic benchmarks for safe poultry drinking water.
Challenges and the road ahead
Despite impressive growth, India’s poultry sector faces several challenges. Antimicrobial resistance is a growing concern as large doses of antimicrobials are often used in intensive broiler production, both for prevention and as growth promoters. Climate change threatens to alter disease patterns and increase heat stress, especially in open-sided houses. Price volatility in feed ingredients and live bird markets adds financial uncertainty for farmers.
On the positive side, the industry is projected to grow at 8-10% annually. Technology is increasingly playing a role – from IoT-enabled environmental monitoring inside poultry houses to improved genetic strains that offer better disease resistance. Government schemes for poultry development, export-oriented policies, and increasing consumer demand for processed chicken products all point toward continued expansion.
