India is the second-largest fruit producer in the world, with an estimated output of over 112 million tonnes of fruits annually. This massive production is not spread evenly across the country – it is concentrated in specific states and well-defined production belts shaped by climate, soil type, altitude, and rainfall patterns. From the apple orchards in the Himalayan foothills to the sprawling mango groves of the Gangetic plains, each region contributes something unique to India’s fruit basket. Understanding which states grow what – and why – is essential for anyone studying Indian agriculture or planning a career in horticulture.

India’s fruit production at a glance

India grows a remarkable diversity of fruits – mangoes, bananas, citrus, apples, grapes, guavas, papayas, pomegranates, and many more. According to government estimates for 2024-25, total fruit production in India stood at approximately 113.22 million tonnes. Bananas and mangoes together account for the bulk of this output, followed by citrus fruits, papayas, and grapes. The leading fruit-producing states include Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Bihar. Each of these states specialises in certain fruits based on its agro-climatic conditions, and over decades, well-established production belts have emerged within them.

Mango-producing states and belts

Mango is the most widely cultivated fruit in India, often called the “king of fruits.” India accounts for roughly half of the world’s total mango production, and the crop is grown across almost every state. However, a handful of states dominate commercial production.

Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh is the largest mango-producing state in India, contributing around 25% of the country’s total mango output. The state’s fertile alluvial plains, warm summers, and well-distributed rainfall create ideal growing conditions. Major mango belts in the state are centred around Lucknow, Malihabad, Saharanpur, Varanasi, and Bulandshahar. Malihabad, near Lucknow, is particularly famous and is often referred to as a mango hub. The prominent varieties grown here include Dasheri, Langra, Chausa, and Safeda. Dasheri mangoes from Lucknow and Langra from Varanasi are among the most recognised varieties across India.

Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh ranks as the second-largest mango producer and leads in terms of total area under mango cultivation. The state’s tropical climate with hot summers and adequate rainfall supports extensive mango farming. Districts like Chittoor, Kadapa, Kurnool, Krishna, and East and West Godavari form the core of Andhra Pradesh’s mango belt. The state is especially known for varieties such as Banganapalli, Totapuri, and Neelum. The Banganapalli mango, indigenous to this region, is valued for its sweetness and long shelf life.

Karnataka, Bihar, and Gujarat

Karnataka is a major producer, known especially for Alphonso (also called Hapus) and Totapuri varieties. The Kolar district area, including Srinivaspur, is often called a “mango city.” Bihar’s mango production is concentrated in the fertile Gangetic belt, with Zardalu, Langra, and Gulabkhas being popular varieties. Gujarat grows the prized Kesar mango, primarily in the Gir region around Junagadh and Bhavnagar. Gir Kesar received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2011, recognising its unique quality.

Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu

Maharashtra is famous for the Alphonso mango, grown primarily in the Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts along the Konkan coast. This variety commands premium prices in both domestic and export markets. Tamil Nadu’s mango belt spans districts like Dharmapuri, Salem, and Krishnagiri, with Totapuri and Neelum being widely cultivated. Krishnagiri district alone produces an estimated 30,000 tonnes of mangoes annually, much of which goes to fruit pulp processing industries.

Banana-producing states and belts

Banana is the second most important fruit crop in India after mango and ranks first in actual production volume. India is the world’s largest banana producer, with annual output exceeding 36 million tonnes from about 994 thousand hectares of cultivated land. The crop is available year-round, making it a staple fruit across the country.

Maharashtra

Maharashtra is one of India’s top banana-producing states and holds the highest productivity per hectare. The Jalgaon district is the undisputed banana capital of the state, where high-density planting of the Grand Naine (also known as G-9) variety using tissue culture plants has become the standard practice. The state also produces Robusta, Dwarf Cavendish, and Safed Velchi. Maharashtra leads India’s banana exports as well, with Jalgaon alone sending thousands of wagon loads annually to markets across northern India.

Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu has the largest area under banana cultivation in India and ranks among the top producers. Key banana-growing districts include Theni, Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), Erode, Coimbatore, and Pudukkottai. Unlike Maharashtra, which relies heavily on the Cavendish type, Tamil Nadu cultivates a diverse range – over 15 varieties – including Robusta, Rasthali, Poovan, Nendran, Red Banana, and Ney Poovan. The Trichy belt is particularly well-known for both domestic supply and export-quality bananas.

Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat

Andhra Pradesh is another leading banana state, with the Rayalaseema region (Anantapur and Kadapa districts) and the Godavari delta being the primary growing areas. Varieties like Robusta, Thella Chakkarakeli, and Grand Naine are widely cultivated. Gujarat’s banana production is concentrated in districts such as Bharuch, Anand, Narmada, and Surat, with Dwarf Cavendish and Grand Naine being the dominant varieties. Gujarat follows a near-monocultural approach to banana farming, focused on high-yield Cavendish types.

Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh

Karnataka’s banana belt includes districts like Chikmagalur, Shivamogga, and Hassan, where the local Yellaki (Ney Poovan) variety is popular alongside Robusta. Uttar Pradesh, though primarily known for mangoes, is also a significant banana producer. The eastern districts of Kushinagar, Gorakhpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Maharajganj are the main growing areas. Banana has been declared the One District One Product (ODOP) crop for Kushinagar, reflecting its importance to the region.

Apple-producing states and belts

Apple cultivation in India is restricted to the temperate Himalayan regions where cold winters provide the essential chilling hours that the crop needs. India produces approximately 2.5 million tonnes of apples annually, making it one of the top ten apple-producing countries globally.

Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu & Kashmir is India’s leading apple-producing region, accounting for about 60% of the country’s total apple output. The Kashmir Valley, particularly districts like Baramulla, Kupwara, Shopian, and Kulgam, forms the heartland of Indian apple production. The region grows premium varieties such as Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Ambri, and Gala. The Ambri variety is unique to Kashmir and is prized for its distinctive flavour. Apple cultivation here benefits from elevations ranging between 1,500 and 2,500 metres, cold winters, and well-drained mountain soils.

Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is the second-largest apple producer in India and is often called the “Apple State.” The main apple-growing districts are Shimla, Kinnaur, Kullu, and Mandi. The Kotgarh area in Shimla district is historically significant as the birthplace of commercial apple farming in India. The state has also established an agri-export zone covering several districts to promote apple exports. Climate change is, however, pushing apple orchards to higher altitudes – cultivation now extends up to 3,500 metres in areas like upper Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti.

Uttarakhand and the Northeast

Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland also grow apples, though in much smaller quantities. Uttarakhand’s production is concentrated in the districts of Almora, Nainital, and Dehradun. Arunachal Pradesh has significant untapped potential for apple cultivation and could emerge as an important supplier to northeastern and even Bangladeshi markets.

Citrus-producing states and belts

Citrus fruits – oranges, mandarins, lemons, limes, and sweet oranges – form the third-largest fruit category in India after mangoes and bananas. The country cultivates citrus across approximately 1 million hectares, spread over several distinct production belts.

Nagpur orange belt

Maharashtra’s Nagpur region is India’s most famous citrus belt. The Nagpur Mandarin (also called Nagpur Santra) is grown extensively in the districts of Nagpur, Amravati, Akola, and Aurangabad. Nagpur is popularly known as the “Orange City of India.” The region’s semi-arid climate with distinct wet and dry seasons suits mandarin cultivation perfectly.

Punjab and Rajasthan – the Kinnow belt

The northwestern states of Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan (Sriganganagar) form a major citrus belt focused on Kinnow, a mandarin hybrid known for its high juice content and tangy flavour. This belt benefits from hot summers, cool winters, and well-developed canal irrigation systems. Kinnow from this region is widely exported.

Northeast India and South India

The Khasi and Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, along with parts of Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, grow the Khasi mandarin. In South India, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu (Dindigul, Trichy), and Karnataka produce a range of citrus including sweet oranges, limes, and lemons. These southern belts benefit from tropical warmth and multiple cropping seasons.

Grape-producing states and belts

India’s grape production is concentrated in a few states, with an annual output exceeding 3 million tonnes. Maharashtra is the dominant grape producer, particularly in the districts of Nashik, Sangli, and Solapur. Nashik is often called the “Grape Capital of India” and is also the centre of India’s wine industry. Karnataka, especially the Bijapur and Bagalkot districts, is the second-largest producer. Thompson Seedless, Sharad Seedless, and Flame Seedless are the most important table grape varieties grown for both domestic consumption and export.

Other important fruit belts

Guava

Uttar Pradesh leads guava production, with the Allahabad (Prayagraj) region being the most famous belt. The Allahabad Safeda variety is renowned for its white flesh and sweetness. Other significant guava-producing states include Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra.

Litchi

Litchi cultivation in India is largely concentrated in Bihar, which produces about 70% of the country’s litchi. The Muzaffarpur district is the heart of India’s litchi belt, with the Shahi variety being the most popular. West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Assam also contribute to litchi production.

Pomegranate

Maharashtra dominates pomegranate production, with the Solapur, Ahmednagar, and Nashik districts forming the primary belt. The Bhagwa variety is the most widely cultivated. Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Rajasthan are other significant producers.

Papaya and pineapple

Papaya is widely grown in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, with Gujarat leading in both area and production. Pineapple production is concentrated in the northeastern states – particularly Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Manipur – as well as in Kerala and Karnataka.

Why specific fruits grow in specific regions

India’s fruit production map is not random – it is shaped by a combination of environmental and geographical factors. Temperature is the most important determinant. Apples need cold winters with adequate chilling hours, restricting them to Himalayan states. Mangoes and bananas require warm tropical or subtropical conditions. Altitude plays a key role too – apple orchards sit at 1,500 to 3,500 metres, while banana plantations thrive at lower elevations. Rainfall patterns matter as well: mango trees need a dry spell before flowering but benefit from rain during fruit development. Soil type also influences production – the alluvial soils of the Indo-Gangetic plain are ideal for mangoes and guavas, while the well-drained mountain soils of Himachal Pradesh suit apples. Over time, these natural advantages have been reinforced by decades of farmer expertise, research institution support, and government policies, creating the specialised production belts we see today.

India’s fruit production – the road ahead

India’s fruit sector continues to evolve. The adoption of high-density planting, tissue culture, drip irrigation, and cold chain infrastructure is improving both productivity and quality. Government initiatives under the National Horticulture Mission and state-level schemes are supporting farmers with subsidies and technical guidance. Climate change, however, is posing new challenges – apple belts are shifting to higher altitudes, and erratic rainfall is affecting mango flowering. The future will likely see new production zones emerge as farmers and researchers adapt to changing conditions.
