Beekeeping, technically known as apiculture, is one of the oldest and most accessible agro-based enterprises in the world. It requires minimal land, relatively low investment, and offers a range of valuable products – from honey and beeswax to royal jelly and bee venom. More importantly, bees serve as essential pollinators that directly boost the yield and quality of agricultural crops. In a country like India, where a majority of farmers operate on small or marginal holdings, apiculture presents a powerful opportunity to supplement income, improve food security, and support ecological balance.

What is apiculture?

Apiculture is the scientific practice of maintaining and managing honeybee colonies in man-made hives for the purpose of collecting honey and other bee-derived products. The term comes from the Latin word apis, meaning bee. While beekeeping has been practised traditionally for centuries, modern apiculture involves systematic colony management using standardised hive boxes, protective equipment, and scientific techniques for breeding, disease control, and product extraction.

In India, beekeeping has evolved significantly. According to research published in Entomological Research, the native species Apis cerana was the dominant bee reared across India for generations due to its adaptability to local conditions. However, the successful introduction of the European honeybee Apis mellifera in 1964 transformed the commercial landscape of Indian apiculture. A. mellifera gradually replaced A. cerana in many regions after 1975, owing to its higher honey yield and stronger resistance to common pests.

Why apiculture matters for agriculture

The most significant – yet often underestimated – contribution of bees to agriculture is pollination. Bees transfer pollen from one flower to another as they forage for nectar, enabling fertilisation and fruit or seed development. This process is critical for the reproduction of a vast number of food crops.

A review published in the journal Insects notes that around 75% of agricultural crop species depend, to some degree, on animal pollination, with bees being the most effective and widely available pollinators. In India, the use of managed honeybee colonies has shown measurable improvements in the fruit quality of crops like guava, coconut, and citrus compared to non-pollinated controls.

As highlighted by the World Economic Forum, pollinators influence about 35% of global agricultural land and support the production of 87 leading food crops worldwide. Improving pollinator density and diversity has the potential to raise crop yields by up to 25%.

The economic value of this pollination service is enormous. In India, the estimated annual value of pollination by honeybees exceeds โ‚น50,000 crore. For every โ‚น1 earned from honey production, pollination services contribute an estimated โ‚น30-40 in increased agricultural output. This makes beekeeping far more than just a honey-producing enterprise – it is a powerful crop enhancement tool.

Hive products and their economic value

Apiculture yields a diverse range of marketable products beyond honey. Each product has commercial applications across food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and industrial sectors.

Honey

Honey is the primary product of beekeeping and the most widely consumed. It is a natural sweetener with well-documented antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. India produces various types of honey – rapeseed/mustard honey, eucalyptus honey, lychee honey, sunflower honey, and multifloral Himalayan honey – depending on the floral source available to the bees. In Marketing Year 2024, India produced approximately 1.4 lakh metric tonnes of natural honey.

Beeswax

Beeswax is secreted by worker bees and used to construct the honeycomb. It has wide applications in candle-making, cosmetics, pharmaceutical coatings, and food-grade packaging. India produces an estimated 5,000-6,000 metric tonnes of beeswax annually.

Royal jelly

Royal jelly is a protein-rich secretion produced by worker bees and fed exclusively to the queen bee. It is highly valued in the health supplement and cosmetics industry for its nutritional profile, which includes amino acids, vitamins, and fatty acids.

Propolis

Propolis is a resinous substance collected by bees from tree buds and bark. Bees use it to seal gaps in the hive and as an antimicrobial agent. It is increasingly used in natural health products, throat sprays, and wound-healing formulations.

Bee pollen

Bee pollen, collected from flowers and packed into pellets by foraging bees, is considered a nutrient-dense superfood. It contains proteins, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and is sold as a dietary supplement.

Bee venom

Bee venom (apitoxin) has applications in apitherapy – a branch of alternative medicine. It is used in treatments for conditions like arthritis, chronic pain, and certain neurological disorders. It is also gaining traction in the cosmetics industry as an ingredient in anti-aging products.

Types of beekeeping in India

Beekeeping in India is broadly practised in two forms, depending on the scale and approach of the beekeeper.

Stationary beekeeping

In stationary beekeeping, colonies are kept at a fixed location throughout the year. The bees forage on whatever flora is available in the surrounding area. This method is simpler and commonly adopted by small-scale or backyard beekeepers, but it can limit honey production because of seasonal fluctuations in nectar availability.

Migratory beekeeping

Migratory beekeeping is the backbone of commercial apiculture. Beekeepers relocate their colonies seasonally to areas with abundant blooming crops, following a floral calendar. For instance, migratory beekeepers in Assam move their hives from jujube flowers to mustard fields, then to coriander, pumpkin, rubber plantations, and litchi orchards across different regions. A single migration season can last 7 to 8 months. This method maximises honey output and simultaneously provides pollination services to farmers along the route.

India’s honey production and export growth

India’s apiculture sector has shown remarkable growth over the past decade. Honey production rose from 76,150 metric tonnes in 2013-14 to around 1,20,000 metric tonnes by 2019-20 – a jump of nearly 58%. By 2024, production reached approximately 1.4 lakh metric tonnes.

On the export front, India has emerged as the second-largest exporter of honey globally (after China) as of marketing year 2024, climbing from the 9th position in 2020. In FY 2023-24, India exported around 1.07 lakh metric tonnes of natural honey worth approximately USD 177.5 million. Major export destinations include the United States, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Libya.

The top honey-producing states in India are Uttar Pradesh (17%), West Bengal (16%), Punjab (14%), Bihar (12%), and Rajasthan (9%). Punjab and Haryana, in particular, have strong beekeeping networks tied to their extensive mustard and sunflower cultivation.

Government support: the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission

The Government of India has actively supported the growth of apiculture through the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM), a Central Sector Scheme launched under the “Sweet Revolution” initiative as part of Atmanirbhar Bharat. The mission has a total budget outlay of โ‚น500 crore and is implemented by the National Bee Board (NBB).

NBHM operates through three Mini Missions. Mini Mission-I focuses on improving crop productivity through pollination aided by scientific beekeeping. Mini Mission-II covers post-harvest management of bee products, including processing, storage, branding, and marketing infrastructure. Mini Mission-III is dedicated to research and technology generation for different agro-climatic regions.

Key achievements under NBHM include the establishment of 6 world-class honey testing labs, 47 mini testing labs, 26 honey processing units, and the formation of 97 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) of beekeepers. The Madhukranti portal has been launched for online registration and traceability of honey and bee products, with over 14,800 beekeepers registered as of October 2025.

Beekeeping as a livelihood for small and marginal farmers

One of the greatest strengths of apiculture is its accessibility. It does not require ownership of large tracts of land. A farmer with even a small plot – or no land at all – can maintain a few bee colonies and generate supplementary income. As noted by NITI Aayog, beekeeping is a low-investment, high-skill enterprise that can significantly contribute to doubling farmers’ income, generating rural employment, and ensuring food security.

According to government estimates, India has the potential to sustain over 200 million bee colonies, compared to roughly 3.4 million colonies currently in operation. If realised, this could provide employment to over 6 million rural families. The sector already supports over 2 lakh farmers and beekeepers across the country.

The economic viability is strong. A cost-benefit analysis of beekeeping in Punjab and Haryana found output-input ratios of 2.46 and 2.06 respectively – meaning every rupee invested in beekeeping generated over โ‚น2 in returns. This makes it a highly profitable enterprise, particularly when integrated with crop farming and dairy within an Integrated Farming System (IFS) model.

Challenges facing Indian apiculture

Despite its growth, the Indian beekeeping sector faces several significant challenges that need to be addressed for sustained development.

Pesticide exposure

Intensive agriculture in states like Punjab and Haryana exposes bee colonies to harmful chemicals, leading to colony losses and reduced productivity. Pesticide poisoning remains one of the leading causes of sudden bee die-offs.

Pests and diseases

Infestations by Varroa mites, wax moths, and diseases like Nosema can severely weaken or destroy entire colonies. Only about 20-25% of Indian beekeepers currently use modern pest management practices.

Climate change

Erratic rainfall, temperature extremes, and unpredictable flowering cycles disrupt bee foraging patterns and honey production. Climate-resilient bee strains and adapted management practices are needed.

Adulteration and quality concerns

Honey adulteration – mixing pure honey with sugar syrups – remains a persistent issue that undermines consumer trust and market value. The introduction of traceability systems like the Madhukranti portal and blockchain-backed supply chains is helping address this problem.

Limited adoption of scientific practices

Many beekeepers, especially in remote areas, still rely on traditional methods and lack access to training in modern hive management, disease control, and product extraction techniques.

The ecological importance of bees

Beyond their agricultural and economic contributions, bees play a vital role in maintaining ecological biodiversity. They pollinate not only cultivated crops but also wild plants, supporting the reproduction of trees, shrubs, and wildflowers that form the foundation of many ecosystems. Forests, grasslands, and wetlands all depend on pollinators for plant diversity, which in turn supports insects, birds, and other wildlife.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) emphasises that protecting pollinators is essential for achieving Sustainable Development Goals related to poverty reduction, zero hunger, good health, and biodiversity conservation. Apiculture, when practised sustainably, directly supports all of these goals.

The future of apiculture in India

The Indian apiculture market is on a strong growth trajectory. It was valued at approximately INR 28,394 million in 2024 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of around 9.7% through 2033. Several trends are shaping the future of the sector.

Technology adoption is accelerating. IoT-based hive sensors, AI-driven decision tools, and satellite monitoring are enabling beekeepers to track hive health, temperature, humidity, and forage quality in real time. Blockchain technology is being used to verify honey origin and combat adulteration. Young entrepreneurs are increasingly viewing beekeeping as a viable and tech-friendly business opportunity.

Value addition is expanding. Beyond raw honey, products like royal jelly, propolis, bee pollen, and bee venom are being commercially produced and marketed through digital platforms. The pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and wellness industries are driving demand for these high-value bee products.

Organic and export markets are growing. Indian producers are adopting USDA Organic and EU Organic certifications to access premium international markets. Countries in Europe and North America are increasingly receptive to certified organic and raw honey from India.
