Mushroom cultivation is quickly becoming one of the most attractive agribusiness opportunities in India. With rising health consciousness, increasing urban demand, and the ability to grow mushrooms using agricultural waste, this sector offers a unique combination of profitability and sustainability. Whether you are a small farmer with limited land or an aspiring agri-entrepreneur, mushroom farming presents a low-investment, high-return venture worth exploring.

Why mushroom cultivation is gaining momentum in India

India’s mushroom market was valued at approximately USD 1.58 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 12.84% through 2035. This growth is fuelled by rising health awareness, increasing vegetarianism, growing demand for plant-based proteins, and expanding use of mushrooms in processed and ready-to-cook food products.

Despite having 18% of the world’s population, India currently produces only about 300,000 tonnes of mushrooms annually, which is less than 1% of global production. This gap between demand and supply represents a significant opportunity for new growers. Mushroom consumption surged noticeably during the COVID-19 pandemic as people became more aware of the health benefits of including nutrient-dense foods in their diet.

Nutritional value and health benefits of mushrooms

Mushrooms are far more than just a culinary ingredient – they are a nutritional powerhouse. According to research published in the journal Foods, edible mushrooms contain between 19-35% protein on a dry weight basis, along with 50-65% carbohydrates (primarily dietary fibre), and very low fat content (2-6%). They are also cholesterol-free.

Mushrooms provide essential B vitamins (including riboflavin, niacin, and folate), minerals like potassium, phosphorus, selenium, and copper, and are one of the few non-animal sources of vitamin D. They contain all nine essential amino acids, making them a complete protein source – particularly valuable for vegetarian and vegan diets.

Medicinal and functional properties

Beyond basic nutrition, mushrooms contain bioactive compounds such as polysaccharides, polyphenols, and beta-glucans that offer antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and even anti-tumour properties. Research from Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health has also noted that regular mushroom consumption may have protective effects on brain health in older adults. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations recommends mushrooms as a healthy food for balanced diets worldwide.

Major types of mushrooms cultivated in India

India primarily cultivates four types of mushrooms, each suited to different climatic conditions and market segments.

Button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus)

This is the most widely grown and consumed variety, accounting for roughly 60% of India’s mushroom market share. Button mushrooms require a controlled temperature of 22-28ยฐC during spawning and 12-18ยฐC during fruiting. They grow on composted substrates made from wheat straw or paddy straw mixed with poultry manure. North Indian states like Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana are major production centres.

Oyster mushroom (Pleurotus spp.)

Oyster mushrooms are the easiest variety for beginners. They thrive on a wide range of agricultural waste materials – paddy straw, wheat straw, sawdust, sugarcane bagasse, cotton waste, and even used tea leaves. They grow well in tropical and subtropical climates and mature within 4-6 weeks, making them ideal for small-scale and commercial farming alike. Oyster mushroom cultivation is expanding rapidly among small farmers and landless labourers across India.

Paddy straw mushroom (Volvariella volvacea)

This tropical variety is popular in South and Southeast Asian countries. It grows at higher temperatures (30-35ยฐC) and is cultivated on rice straw beds. The paddy straw mushroom has a shorter shelf life compared to other varieties, so it is mostly consumed fresh and sold in local markets.

Milky mushroom (Calocybe indica)

The milky mushroom is a tropical species that was developed for commercial cultivation in India. It can tolerate temperatures of 25-35ยฐC, making it well-suited for the warmer regions of the country. Milky mushrooms have a firm texture, long shelf life, and are gaining popularity in southern Indian states.

How mushroom cultivation works: step by step

Mushroom farming follows a structured process that, once understood, is straightforward to replicate across cycles.

Substrate preparation

The substrate is the growing medium for mushrooms. Depending on the variety, it can be composted straw, pasteurised paddy straw, wheat straw, sawdust, or other agro-waste. For button mushrooms, the substrate is prepared by composting straw with supplements like poultry manure, urea, and gypsum over 25-30 days with regular turning. For oyster mushrooms, the substrate simply needs to be chopped, soaked in water, and pasteurised by hot water treatment.

Spawning

Spawn is the mushroom equivalent of a seed. It is produced from selected mushroom strains grown on sterilised cereal grains (usually wheat or sorghum). Freshly prepared spawn (20-30 days old) is mixed into the prepared substrate in a clean, fumigated room. The quality of the spawn directly affects the yield and quality of the harvest.

Incubation and cropping

After spawning, the bags or trays are placed in a dark, humid room for the mycelium to colonise the substrate. This spawn-run phase takes about 2-3 weeks. Once the substrate is fully colonised, environmental conditions are changed – introducing light, fresh air, and slightly lower temperatures – to trigger fruiting (the formation of mushroom pins). Harvesting begins once mushrooms reach marketable size, and each batch typically produces 3-4 flushes of mushrooms.

Why mushroom farming is ideal for small farmers

One of the biggest advantages of mushroom cultivation is that it requires very little land. A room or shed as small as 250-500 square feet is enough to get started. Mushrooms are grown vertically on racks, which maximises space utilisation. This makes it an excellent option for marginal farmers, landless labourers, and even urban entrepreneurs.

The investment required is relatively modest. A small-scale mushroom unit can be started with as little as โ‚น50,000 to โ‚น1 lakh. The harvest cycle is fast – most mushrooms are ready to pick within 30-45 days of spawning – and multiple crop cycles are possible in a single year. Women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Farmers Producer Organizations (FPOs) play a particularly active role in mushroom production, making it an inclusive livelihood option.

Revenue streams beyond fresh sales

Fresh mushroom sales to local markets, supermarkets, restaurants, and hotels are the primary income source. But growers can diversify by processing mushrooms into dried, pickled, or powdered forms for extended shelf life and premium pricing. Mushroom-based products such as snacks, soups, and supplements are growing segments in the Indian food market. The spent mushroom substrate (what is left after harvesting) can also be recycled as cattle feed or used for vermicomposting, adding another layer of income from the same operation.

Mushroom farming and sustainability

Mushroom cultivation is one of the most environmentally friendly farming practices. It turns agricultural waste into food – India generates roughly 600 million tonnes of agricultural residue annually, and diverting even a small fraction to mushroom growing could dramatically increase production while reducing waste burning.

Compared to conventional protein sources like meat, mushroom farming requires significantly less land, water, and energy and generates far fewer greenhouse gas emissions. The spent substrate, when returned to fields, improves soil organic matter and health, completing a circular farming cycle. This makes mushrooms not just profitable but genuinely regenerative.

Government support and training opportunities

The Indian government actively promotes mushroom cultivation through several schemes and institutions. Under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), the National Horticulture Board (NHB) provides credit-linked subsidies of up to 50% on infrastructure costs, with support available up to โ‚น10 lakh for setting up mushroom production units.

NABARD offers loans and grants for agri-entrepreneurs, while State Horticulture Departments provide financial aid, equipment support, and hands-on training. The ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) and the Directorate of Mushroom Research in Solan regularly conduct training programmes on mushroom production technology. Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) across the country also offer localised training that requires minimal prior investment or technical knowledge.

Key challenges to be aware of

While mushroom farming has clear advantages, it is not without challenges. Maintaining the right temperature and humidity levels is critical – even small fluctuations can affect yield. Pest and disease management requires strict hygiene protocols. Access to quality spawn and cold storage infrastructure remains limited in many rural areas. Additionally, fresh mushrooms have a short shelf life, which means proximity to markets or access to processing facilities matters. Beginners should start with a small setup, master the technique, and then scale gradually.

The road ahead for India’s mushroom industry

The future of mushroom cultivation in India looks promising. The domestic market is projected to reach USD 5.29 billion by 2035, driven by growing urban consumption, hotel and restaurant demand, and expansion into processed and functional mushroom products. Innovation in the sector – including AI-based climate control, smart cropping systems, and bio-fortification of mushroom varieties – is accelerating.

India has all the raw ingredients for a mushroom revolution: abundant agricultural waste, cheap labour, diverse agro-climatic zones, and growing consumer demand.
