India is the second-largest producer of fruits in the world, right after China. With diverse agro-climatic zones ranging from tropical coastlines to temperate highlands, the country grows an extraordinary variety of fruits – from mangoes and bananas to apples and citrus. In 2023-24, India’s total fruit production reached approximately 112.97 million tonnes, cultivated across about 7.13 million hectares. But not all fruits contribute equally to this massive output. A handful of major fruits – mangoes, bananas, citrus fruits, papayas, and apples – dominate the landscape in terms of both area and production volume. Understanding the share of each fruit helps us appreciate India’s agricultural strengths and the areas where further improvement is possible.

India’s position as a global fruit producer

India holds a unique position in world fruit production. According to APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority), India is the largest producer of bananas, mangoes, and papayas globally. The country also ranks among the top ten producers of apples, oranges, grapes, and pineapples. Five major fruits – mango, banana, citrus, guava, and apple – together account for roughly 75% of India’s total fruit production. Despite this vast output, India’s share in global fruit exports remains quite low – around 1% – pointing to a significant gap between production capacity and export performance.

Mango: the king of fruits and largest area holder

Mango holds a special place in Indian agriculture and culture alike. It occupies the largest cultivation area among all fruits in India – approximately 35% of the total area under fruit crops. In terms of production volume, mango contributes about 20-22% to India’s total fruit output. During 2024-25, mango production was projected at around 22.8 million tonnes, showing steady growth over previous years.

Major mango-producing states

Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Gujarat, and Maharashtra are the leading mango-producing states. Each region is known for its distinct varieties. Uttar Pradesh produces the famous Dasheri and Langra, while Maharashtra and Gujarat are renowned for Alphonso and Kesar respectively. Other popular varieties include Banganapalli from Andhra Pradesh and Himsagar from West Bengal.

Why mango leads in area but not in production share

Despite occupying the maximum acreage, mango does not lead in total production volume. The reason is simple: mango trees are seasonal bearers, producing fruit typically once a year during the summer months. Productivity per hectare is relatively lower compared to banana, which bears fruit year-round. This is why banana surpasses mango in total production despite covering less land.

Banana: the highest production share among all fruits

Banana is India’s most produced fruit. It contributes roughly 32-33% to the country’s total fruit production – the highest share among all fruit crops. As per the National Horticulture Board, banana ranks first in production and third in area among Indian fruit crops. During 2024-25, banana production was estimated at approximately 38 million tonnes, cultivated on about 0.9 million hectares.

What makes banana so productive

Several factors explain banana’s dominance in production volume. First, banana is a perennial crop with a short crop cycle of 12-14 months, allowing nearly year-round harvesting. Second, it has very high productivity per hectare – some states like Maharashtra achieve yields above 60 tonnes per hectare against a national average of around 35 tonnes per hectare. Third, banana thrives across a wide range of climatic conditions, from the humid tropics of Kerala to the semi-arid regions of Gujarat.

Major banana-producing states and varieties

Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka are the top banana-producing states. Key commercial varieties include Grand Naine (Cavendish type, widely exported), Robusta, Nendran (popular in Kerala for chips), Poovan, and Rasthali. Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district, in particular, has emerged as a hub for organized banana cultivation and marketing.

Citrus fruits: a versatile contributor

Citrus fruits – including oranges, mandarins (kinnow), lemons, limes, and sweet limes – collectively form the third-largest fruit group in India. They are cultivated on roughly 1.04 million hectares and contribute about 12-13% to total fruit production. Citrus fruits are valued not only for fresh consumption but also for juice processing, essential oil extraction, and medicinal uses.

Key citrus-producing regions and varieties

Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh dominate in orange (particularly Nagpur mandarin) production, while Punjab and Rajasthan are major producers of Kinnow, a mandarin hybrid known for its high juice content. Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu contribute significantly to lime and lemon output. Assam Lemon and Kagzi Lime are other noteworthy regional varieties.

Citrus production has shown a positive growth trajectory in recent years. According to government data, the production of mandarin and lime/lemon increased noticeably during 2023-24 and 2024-25, driven by expanded cultivation area and improved orchard management practices. The push for citrus processing units in states like Maharashtra has also supported this growth.

Papaya: a nutritional powerhouse with growing output

Papaya is one of the fastest-growing fruit crops in India in terms of production. It occupies about 0.14-0.15 million hectares and contributes roughly 6% to total fruit output. What makes papaya stand out is its exceptionally high yield per hectare and its ability to bear fruit within 8-10 months of planting.

Leading papaya states and varieties

Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh are the primary papaya-producing states. The most widely cultivated varieties include Red Lady (a high-yielding hybrid), Pusa Delicious (developed by IARI), Pusa Nanha (a dwarf variety), and Coorg Honey Dew. The shift towards hybrid and tissue-cultured planting material has significantly improved both yield and fruit quality in recent years.

Papaya’s role in nutrition and processing

Papaya is rich in vitamins A, C, and E, along with the enzyme papain, which has wide applications in the food processing, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries. Green papaya is also used as a vegetable in several Indian cuisines. The fruit’s dual utility – as both a fresh fruit and an industrial raw material – adds to its economic importance.

Apple: India’s premium temperate fruit

Apple is the most important temperate fruit grown in India, primarily cultivated in the hilly regions of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and to a smaller extent in Arunachal Pradesh and parts of the northeastern hills. Apple occupies about 0.3 million hectares and contributes around 2-3% to India’s total fruit production. While its share in total volume is relatively small compared to tropical fruits, its economic value per unit is significantly higher.

Apple varieties and production challenges

The dominant varieties include Royal Delicious, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and Ambri (a native Kashmiri variety). In recent years, high-density apple cultivation using rootstocks like M9 and M26 has been promoted to improve yield and fruit quality. However, apple production faces challenges including fluctuating output due to climate variability – erratic snowfall, rising temperatures, and hailstorms can significantly affect harvest in a given season.

Economic significance of apple

Apple is a high-value crop that supports the livelihoods of lakhs of farming families in the hill states. Jammu & Kashmir alone accounts for nearly 75% of India’s total apple production. The fruit fetches premium prices in domestic urban markets, and significant quantities are also exported to neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and Nepal.

Other notable fruits contributing to production

Beyond the five major fruits, several others make meaningful contributions to India’s fruit basket. Guava accounts for about 4% of total production, with Allahabad (Prayagraj) being its most famous growing region. Grapes, concentrated largely in Maharashtra and Karnataka, are a major export earner – India ships significant volumes to Europe and the Middle East. Watermelon has seen rapid growth in production; during 2024-25, watermelon output was estimated at about 44.7 million tonnes, a notable increase over previous years. Pomegranate, litchi, sapota, and pineapple are other fruits that, while smaller in individual share, contribute significantly to regional economies.

Improving fruit productivity: progress and potential

India’s fruit productivity has improved considerably over the past two decades, thanks to better varieties, drip irrigation, integrated nutrient management, and the adoption of modern horticultural practices promoted under schemes like the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH). Between 2011-12 and 2023-24, India’s total fruit production grew by nearly 48%.

Where the gaps remain

Despite this progress, India’s average fruit productivity – around 16 tonnes per hectare – is still roughly half of what countries like the United States achieve. Post-harvest losses remain a critical issue: an estimated 25-30% of fruit produce is wasted due to inadequate cold chain infrastructure, poor storage facilities, and inefficient supply chains. Only a tiny fraction of domestic production (less than 2%) is processed into value-added products.

The way forward

Expanding cold storage and pack house networks, investing in food processing, promoting high-density planting, using tissue-cultured planting material, and strengthening farmer-producer organisations (FPOs) for collective marketing are key steps that can raise both productivity and farmer incomes. The growing focus on GI-tagged fruits and organic certification is also opening up premium market opportunities both domestically and internationally.

A quick summary of major fruits and their shares

To put the key numbers in perspective: Banana leads India’s fruit production with approximately 33% of total output, followed by mango at around 22%. Citrus fruits collectively contribute about 12-13%, while papaya adds around 6%. Guava accounts for about 4%, and grapes about 3%. Apple, though smaller in volume at 2-3%, carries high economic value. Together, these major fruits account for over three-quarters of all fruit production in the country.
