It feeds billions of people daily, supports millions of farming livelihoods, and shapes the agricultural economy of entire continents. Understanding where rice is grown – both globally and within India – is essential for anyone studying agriculture, food security, or crop planning. This post breaks down the key distribution trends of rice across the world and within India, backed by the latest available data.

Why rice distribution matters
Rice is not just a crop; it is a cornerstone of food security. Knowing where rice is grown helps governments plan procurement, allocate subsidies, manage water resources, and design trade policies. For students and professionals in agriculture, mapping rice distribution provides a foundation for understanding agro-climatic suitability, cropping patterns, and yield gaps across regions.
Global rice production at a glance
Global milled rice production has been on a steady upward trend for decades. According to USDA Foreign Agricultural Service data, world rice production reached approximately 541.66 million metric tons (milled basis) in the 2024/25 marketing year. This figure represents a consistent increase from around 400 million metric tons in the early 2000s, driven by improved varieties, expanded irrigation, and better crop management practices across major producing nations.
The top rice-producing countries in the world include China, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Vietnam. Together, China and India alone account for over 50% of global rice output. Other significant producers include Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines, Japan, and Pakistan.
Asia’s dominance in rice
One of the most striking facts about rice is that over 90% of the world’s rice is both produced and consumed in the Asia-Pacific region. This concentration reflects the crop’s deep cultural, dietary, and economic roots in Asian societies. Countries stretching from Pakistan in the west to Japan in the east form a continuous rice-growing belt that has historically accounted for more than nine-tenths of global rice output.
Within Asia, the production landscape has shifted over time. China led global rice production for decades with output exceeding 200 million metric tons (paddy basis). However, India has been catching up steadily, particularly after the spread of improved seed varieties and fertiliser technology to rainfed eastern regions. Southeast Asian nations like Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Vietnam collectively add another 120-130 million metric tons annually to the global rice basket.
Rice outside Asia
Only about 9-10% of the world’s rice harvest comes from outside Asia. South America – led by Brazil – is the next significant producing region. Brazil’s rice harvested area stands at around 1.7 million hectares, with production concentrated in the southern states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina under irrigated conditions. Sub-Saharan Africa is another growing rice region, with countries like Nigeria, Madagascar, and Egypt increasing their output. However, many African nations remain net rice importers due to rapidly growing demand outpacing local supply.
The United States also plays a role in global rice trade, with production centred in Arkansas, California, and Louisiana. The U.S. is among the top five rice exporting countries worldwide, shipping primarily to Mexico, Haiti, and Japan.
India’s position in global rice production
India holds a unique distinction in the global rice landscape. It has the largest area under rice cultivation of any country in the world. As per USDA’s International Production Assessment Division, India’s rice harvested area reached a record 51.42 million hectares in the 2024/25 crop year, with total milled production at 150 million metric tons. This was a significant jump from 44.16 million hectares reported in 2018/19.
India is also the world’s largest rice exporter. In 2023/24, India exported approximately 16.5 million metric tons of rice, far ahead of Thailand and Vietnam. Basmati and non-basmati varieties from India reach markets across the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
India’s yield challenge
Despite leading in area and being a top producer, India’s rice yield has historically trailed the global average. In 2018/19, India’s yield was approximately 3.96 tonnes per hectare (rough rice basis), while the global average hovered around 4.68 t/ha. By 2024/25, India’s yield improved to about 4.38 t/ha, but it still falls below the levels achieved by countries like China (over 7 t/ha), Egypt, and Australia, where irrigated systems and high-yielding varieties deliver superior productivity.
This yield gap is primarily attributed to a large proportion of rainfed rice cultivation in India, fragmented landholdings, uneven adoption of improved varieties, and water management challenges. Bridging this gap remains a central goal for Indian agricultural policy.
State-wise rice distribution in India
Rice cultivation in India is spread across diverse agro-climatic zones, from the humid plains of eastern India to the irrigated tracts of Punjab and the plateau regions of Telangana. However, a handful of states dominate the production map.
Top rice-producing states (2024-25)
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare’s Final Estimates for the 2024-25 crop year, the leading rice-producing states are:
Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 20.76 million tonnes of rice from 7.35 million hectares, making it the state with both the highest production and the largest cultivated area. The state’s vast Gangetic plains and extensive canal irrigation system support widespread rice farming, particularly during the kharif season.
Telangana ranked second with 17.45 million tonnes from 4.81 million hectares. Telangana’s rapid rise in the rice production rankings – from a relatively mid-ranking state just a decade ago – is linked to major investments in irrigation infrastructure, particularly lift irrigation projects, and strong government procurement incentives.
West Bengal came third at 16.02 million tonnes from 5.59 million hectares. Long considered the rice bowl of India, West Bengal benefits from fertile alluvial soil, ample rainfall, and a tradition of paddy cultivation. It grows both aus (early), aman (monsoon), and boro (winter) rice.
Punjab, despite having a relatively smaller area of 3.24 million hectares, produced 14.36 million tonnes, giving it the highest yield per hectare among major rice-producing states – approximately 4,428 kg/ha. Punjab’s productivity advantage comes from near-universal irrigation through canals and tubewells, widespread adoption of high-yielding varieties, and intensive crop management practices rooted in the Green Revolution era.
Other important states include Chhattisgarh (10.37 Mt), Odisha (9.53 Mt), Madhya Pradesh (9.11 Mt), Bihar (8.30 Mt), Andhra Pradesh (8.16 Mt), and Tamil Nadu (7.09 Mt).
Area vs. production vs. productivity: a key distinction
Understanding Indian rice distribution requires separating three metrics – area under cultivation, total production, and productivity (yield per hectare) – because different states lead in each category.
Area: Uttar Pradesh has the largest rice-cultivated area (7.35 Mha), followed by West Bengal (5.59 Mha) and Telangana (4.81 Mha). States in eastern India generally have large areas under rice due to favourable monsoon rainfall and flat terrain.
Production: Uttar Pradesh leads in total output, but Telangana has shown the fastest growth in recent years. As noted in a report based on the Ministry’s estimates, Telangana contributed about 12% of India’s total rice output in 2023-24, surpassing several traditionally dominant states.
Productivity: Punjab leads with over 4,400 kg/ha, followed by Andhra Pradesh (3,928 kg/ha) and Haryana. These states achieve high yields through assured irrigation, advanced seed technology, and better input management. In contrast, states like Odisha and Chhattisgarh, while large in area, have yields below 2,700 kg/ha, reflecting their dependence on rain-fed farming and lower input use.
Factors shaping rice distribution
Several factors determine where and how much rice is grown in both global and Indian contexts:
Climate: Rice thrives in warm, humid conditions with temperatures above 20-25ยฐC and abundant water. This is why tropical and sub-tropical Asia dominates global production. Within India, the monsoon belt from West Bengal to Kerala provides natural rainfall-based irrigation for paddy cultivation.
Water availability: Rice is a water-intensive crop. Irrigated rice occupies about 30% of total irrigated land globally and accounts for over 70% of rice output. In India, states with extensive canal and tubewell irrigation – such as Punjab and Andhra Pradesh – achieve much higher yields than rain-dependent states.
Soil: Fertile alluvial and clayey soils with good water retention are ideal for paddy fields. The Indo-Gangetic plains and deltaic regions of eastern India offer these conditions naturally.
Government policies: India’s Minimum Support Price (MSP) for paddy, public procurement systems, and subsidies on fertiliser, seeds, and electricity significantly influence which states grow more rice. Punjab’s dominance in yield, for instance, is closely linked to assured government procurement and heavy agricultural subsidies.
Technology adoption: The Green Revolution transformed rice productivity in Punjab and Haryana during the 1960s-70s. More recently, the spread of hybrid varieties, precision nutrient management, and improved water-use efficiency has been lifting yields in states like Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The IAEA and FAO have promoted climate-smart agriculture practices across Asia, including in India, to help farmers boost rice productivity sustainably.
Trends to watch
India’s total rice production crossed 150 million tonnes for the first time in 2024-25, a milestone driven by record area and improving yields. The country’s rice harvested area expanded by nearly 7 million hectares between 2018/19 and 2024/25 – a substantial increase in a short period.
At the global level, production is projected to remain relatively stable around 540 million metric tons (milled basis) for 2025/26. However, challenges like water scarcity, climate change, and declining growth rates in yield pose long-term risks. The growth rate in global rice yields has slowed from over 2% per year in the 1970s-80s to about 1% in recent decades, raising concerns about keeping pace with population-driven demand.
Within India, the eastward shift in rice intensification – with states like Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh increasing their contributions – is a significant trend. It suggests that the traditional rice heartlands of eastern India and the newer irrigated zones of central and southern India will play an increasingly important role in national food security.
