Indian agriculture has a remarkably long history – stretching back thousands of years to a time when early communities along river banks first learned to cultivate crops and domesticate animals. From the sophisticated farming systems of the Indus Valley Civilization to the sweeping changes of the Green Revolution, the story of Indian agriculture is one of continuous adaptation, innovation, and transformation. Understanding this journey is essential for anyone studying agriculture today, because so many of India’s current farming practices, crop choices, and land management approaches have deep historical roots.

Prehistoric beginnings: the shift from foraging to farming
India’s agricultural story begins in the Neolithic period, roughly between 7000 BCE and 4000 BCE. During this time, early inhabitants in the northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent – particularly at sites like Mehrgarh in Baluchistan – began growing barley and wheat while raising cattle, sheep, and goats. These communities gradually shifted from a nomadic, hunter-gatherer lifestyle to a more settled, agrarian one.
Meanwhile, in other regions of the subcontinent, different crops were being cultivated independently. Wild rice was being grown in the Vindhyan Hills and the Ganges valley, possibly as early as 7000 BCE. In the Deccan Plateau, communities cultivated millets and pulses, and herded cattle. Cotton cultivation appeared in the subcontinent by around 5000-4000 BCE – making India one of the earliest regions in the world to grow cotton.
This period also saw the domestication of animals that would become central to Indian agriculture for millennia. Cattle, particularly the zebu (humped cattle), were domesticated independently on the Indian subcontinent. Oxen were used for ploughing, and animal dung served as fertiliser – creating a sustainable farming cycle that persisted for thousands of years.
The Indus Valley Civilization: agriculture meets engineering
Around 3300 BCE, the Indus Valley Civilization (also called the Harappan Civilization) emerged in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent. It became one of the world’s earliest urban civilizations, and agriculture was its economic backbone.
Crops and cropping systems
Harappan farmers grew a wide range of crops, including wheat, barley, peas, sesame, dates, and cotton. Research by J. Bates and colleagues (2016) has confirmed that Indus Valley populations practised complex multi-cropping strategies across both seasons – growing rice, millets, and beans during summer (kharif), and wheat, barley, and pulses during winter (rabi). This required different watering approaches and demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of seasonal agriculture.
The Indus Valley is also recognized as one of the earliest centres of cotton production in the world. Archaeological evidence from Mohenjo-Daro includes cloth fragments and multi-fold yarn, pointing to a well-developed textile industry built on cotton farming.
Irrigation and water management
One of the most impressive achievements of the Harappan civilization was its irrigation and water management infrastructure. Farmers used canals, wells, and the natural flooding of the Indus River to irrigate their fields. At sites in western India, archaeologists have found massive reservoirs carved from solid rock, designed to collect and store rainwater for use during dry months. Sophisticated artificial reservoirs at Girnar date back to approximately 3000 BCE, and early canal irrigation systems were in place by around 2600 BCE.
Storage and organization
Large granaries unearthed at Harappa, Mohenjo-Daro, Lothal, and Rakhigarhi provide strong evidence of organized agricultural surplus management. These structures suggest that farmers likely paid a portion of their produce to a central authority, which then redistributed it – an early form of agricultural taxation and food security planning.
The Vedic period: agriculture as culture and religion
As the Indus Valley Civilization declined around 1900 BCE, the Vedic period (approximately 1500-500 BCE) ushered in a new chapter. Agriculture during this era became deeply intertwined with Indian culture and religion. The Vedic texts, especially the Rigveda, contain hymns celebrating rain, harvest, and the earth – reflecting how important farming was to daily life and spiritual practice.
The iron revolution in farming
A major turning point came with the introduction of iron around 1200 BCE. Iron ploughs could break harder, heavier soil that wooden ploughs could not handle. This allowed farmers to clear dense forests in the Gangetic plains and bring vast new areas under cultivation. The Ganges River valley rapidly developed into one of India’s most productive agricultural regions.
By the later Vedic period (around 1000-500 BCE), texts reference a wide range of farming practices: systematic ploughing, seed broadcasting, fallowing, crop sequencing, and the use of cow dung as manure. Irrigation also became more common, and farmers grew a diverse range of cereals, vegetables, and fruits.
Agriculture under empires: Maurya to Chola
The rise of large empires brought organized state involvement in agriculture. The Mauryan Empire (322-185 BCE) classified soils for agricultural purposes, made meteorological observations to guide farming, and invested in dam construction and irrigation infrastructure. The Greek diplomat Megasthenes, who visited India around 300 BCE, noted that most of the land was irrigated and produced two harvests a year thanks to India’s double monsoon seasons.
In South India, the Chola Empire (875-1279 CE) made significant contributions to water management. The Kallanai dam, built on the river Kaveri during the 1st-2nd century CE, is one of the oldest water-regulation structures in the world still in use today. Tamil farmers cultivated rice, sugarcane, millets, black pepper, coconuts, and cotton using systematic methods of ploughing, manuring, weeding, and irrigation.
India’s agricultural products also became part of global trade networks during this period. Spices like cinnamon and black pepper were shipped to the Mediterranean, and the Gupta period (320-550 CE) saw the earliest known production of crystallized sugar.
Medieval India: the Mughal agricultural system
The medieval period brought further diversification of Indian agriculture through trade and conquest. The Delhi Sultanate introduced new irrigation techniques and crops, while the Mughal Empire (16th-18th centuries) oversaw one of the most productive agricultural eras in Indian history.
Mughal land revenue and irrigation reforms
Emperor Akbar (reigned 1556-1605) and his revenue minister Todar Mal introduced the zabt system – a reformed land revenue structure that classified lands based on productivity and taxed farmers using a uniform monetary system instead of the older tribute model. This system incentivized farmers to grow higher-value cash crops such as cotton, indigo, sugarcane, and opium. The Mughal government also funded large-scale irrigation systems, including canals and Persian wheels, which increased crop yields significantly.
Crop introduction and diversification
Indian farmers during the Mughal period were remarkably adaptive. New World crops like maize and tobacco – introduced through Portuguese and other European traders – were rapidly adopted and widely cultivated across the empire between 1600 and 1650. Crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, chilli peppers, pineapples, and papaya also entered India during this period. These introductions would permanently reshape Indian cuisine and agriculture.
According to several economic historians, agricultural productivity and per-capita output in 17th-century Mughal India were comparable to – or even higher than – those in contemporary Europe. Indian farmers were skilled in growing a wide variety of both food and non-food crops, a versatility that distinguished them from their European counterparts.
Colonial period: disruption and commercialization
The arrival of the British East India Company and later the establishment of the British Raj fundamentally altered Indian agriculture. Colonial policies shifted the focus from food crops to export-oriented cash crops – including indigo, cotton, opium, wheat, and rice – to serve British industrial and commercial interests.
While some modern techniques were introduced and canal-based irrigation expanded in regions like Punjab and Andhra Pradesh, the overall impact on Indian farming was largely exploitative. Traditional self-sufficient village economies were disrupted, and the emphasis on cash crops over food production contributed to devastating famines throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. Agricultural growth during the later colonial period was modest, averaging about 1% per year in the second half of the 19th century.
Post-independence and the Green Revolution
When India gained independence in 1947, it inherited an agricultural sector weakened by decades of colonial exploitation. Productivity was low, food shortages were common, and the country was heavily dependent on food imports – particularly wheat from the United States under the PL-480 agreement.
The food crisis of the 1960s
Back-to-back droughts in 1964-65 and 1965-66 pushed India to the brink of famine, making agricultural modernization an urgent national priority. This crisis set the stage for the Green Revolution, which would transform Indian agriculture in a matter of years.
How the Green Revolution changed Indian farming
The Green Revolution in India was spearheaded by agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan, often called the “Father of the Green Revolution in India,” who worked closely with American agronomist Norman Borlaug. In 1966, India imported 18,000 tonnes of high-yielding variety (HYV) wheat seeds from Mexico. The results were dramatic – wheat production surged from 12 million tonnes in 1965 to 20 million tonnes by 1970.
The revolution centred on the adoption of HYV seeds for wheat and rice, combined with chemical fertilisers, pesticides, modern irrigation, and farm mechanisation. The number of tractors in India grew from 37,000 in 1960 to over a million by 1990. Fertiliser use increased from under 1 million tonnes in the 1960s to over 12 million tonnes in the 1990s. States like Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh – which had better irrigation infrastructure – benefitted the most.
By the mid-1970s, India achieved self-sufficiency in food grain production and eventually became a net food exporter. Rice production rose from about 34.58 million tonnes in 1960 to over 137 million tonnes in recent years, according to Down to Earth.
The other side of the Green Revolution
Despite its successes, the Green Revolution came with significant drawbacks. The heavy reliance on chemical inputs led to soil degradation, groundwater depletion, and loss of biodiversity. In Punjab, where the revolution was most intense, an estimated 80% of groundwater units are now classified as “overexploited.” The production of indigenous crop varieties and millets declined sharply as farmers focused almost entirely on wheat and rice.
The benefits were also unevenly distributed. Wealthier farmers with access to irrigation and capital prospered, while small and marginal farmers in rain-fed regions struggled with rising costs and shrinking profitability. Many small farmers fell into debt cycles, and regional disparities between prosperous states like Punjab and lagging ones like Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh widened considerably.
Indian agriculture today and the road ahead
Today, India is one of the world’s largest agricultural producers, with roughly 157 million hectares of cultivated land across 20 agro-climatic regions. The country is the largest global producer of milk, jute, and pulses, and the second-largest producer of rice, wheat, and cotton. Agricultural exports reached approximately $49 billion in 2023-24.
Yet challenges remain. A large portion of Indian farming is still done on small, fragmented holdings – the average farm size is about 1.5 acres. Climate change, erratic monsoons, declining water tables, and soil health issues pose ongoing threats. There is growing recognition that India needs a “second Green Revolution” – one that emphasises sustainability, crop diversification, water conservation, organic farming, and better support for smallholder farmers.
Initiatives in precision agriculture, digital farming tools, natural farming methods, and the revival of indigenous crop varieties like millets are now gaining momentum. The challenge is to maintain food security for over 1.4 billion people while also protecting the natural resources that farming depends on.
