India’s poultry sector has quietly become one of the most remarkable growth stories in the country’s agricultural landscape. From a humble backyard activity practised across rural households for centuries, it has transformed into a dynamic, largely organized industry – and the numbers tell a compelling story. Between 1997 and 2003 alone, the total poultry population surged from 315 million to 457 million, a jump of over 45%. What drove this surge, how is the industry structured today, and why does the meat processing side still lag behind production? Let’s break it down.

The population figures: what the numbers reveal

The foundation of this growth lies in a clear shift from traditional, small-scale rearing to commercial-scale production. According to FAO’s country review on India’s poultry sector, the population of indigenous (desi) fowls grew from 188.36 million in 1997 to 238.21 million by 2003 – an increase of around 8.3% per annum. Even more striking was the growth of improved (commercial) fowls, which climbed from 127.06 million to 219 million over the same period, representing a 15.19% annual increase.

This distinction matters because improved fowls – selectively bred for higher meat and egg output – are the backbone of modern commercial poultry farming. Their faster growth relative to desi birds indicates that it was the organized commercial sector that was primarily responsible for the rise in overall poultry numbers.

By 2019, India’s total poultry population had exceeded 851 million, growing at an exponential 16.8% between 2012 and 2019 – far outpacing livestock growth of just 4.6% over the same period. This contrast underscores how uniquely dynamic the poultry segment has been within India’s broader animal agriculture sector.

Chickens dominate: the 93.5% story

When we talk about poultry in India, we are largely talking about chickens. Chickens constitute approximately 93.5% of the total poultry population, with ducks and other birds – turkeys, quails, guinea fowls, geese, and peafowl – making up the remainder. According to the FAO, in both the traditional backyard system and the modern intensive system of production, chickens are the most popular, followed by ducks. Together, these two species account for more than 99% of the total poultry population. Other domesticated avian species are reared only in limited pockets of the country.

The role of ducks

Ducks occupy a secondary but significant position in India’s poultry landscape. Data from Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS) shows that in 2022, the total duck population under the backyard system stood at 10.76 million, with desi ducks comprising around 87% of this figure. Duck rearing is concentrated in the coastal and northeastern states – West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu – where access to waterways and wetlands makes this form of farming practical.

From a production standpoint, ducks form about 10% of the total poultry population but contribute only around 2-3% of the country’s total egg output. Their meat contribution is similarly modest. Still, for marginal and small farmers in eastern and coastal India, duck farming remains an important supplementary livelihood.

Two systems, one industry

India’s poultry production operates through two fundamentally different systems that coexist side by side: the traditional backyard (extensive) system and the modern intensive commercial system.

Backyard poultry: the rural backbone

Backyard poultry is a centuries-old practice, typically involving 5 to 50 birds per household, reared using local (desi) breeds in a free-range, low-input setup with minimal management. Desi chicken breeds in the backyard system contribute about 11% of India’s total egg production, with individual birds yielding only 50-60 eggs annually – far below commercial breeds. Despite the low productivity, this system is critical for rural food security and income, particularly for women and marginalised households. Backyard birds – often called walking banks by agricultural economists – are sold during emergencies or to supplement household nutrition.

Commercial and intensive production: the growth engine

The organized sector of the Indian poultry industry contributes nearly 70% of total output, with the remaining 30% in the unorganized sector. The intensive/industrial system – which includes vertically integrated operations managing everything from breeding to processing – has become the dominant force. More than 80% of India’s chicken output is produced by organized commercial farms, and major poultry companies with vertically integrated operations account for approximately 60-70% of total chicken production.

These large companies – known as integrators – own hatcheries, feed mills, and slaughter facilities, and extend credit, veterinary services, and technical support to contract farmers who raise chicks to slaughter weight. This model has transformed broiler chicken farming from a traditional small-scale practice into a highly organized and vertically integrated agri-business. The broiler industry is especially concentrated in southern India – Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu – which together account for the majority of national broiler output.

Compared with other livestock sectors – cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat – the poultry industry in India is more scientific, well-organized, and progressing towards modernization. This organizational advantage is a key reason the sector has outpaced other animal agriculture segments in growth rate.

The meat processing gap

Despite impressive production numbers, India’s poultry meat processing sector remains strikingly traditional. The Indian broiler sector operates almost completely as a live-bird market, with manual poultry processing accounting for more than 90% of consumption. Traditional dressing facilities at both wholesale and retail levels are entirely manual, with no sanitary measures for the dressing floor or workers.

Over 90% of chicken in India is sold in wet markets, where live birds are slaughtered and sold fresh. Consumers have a strong preference for freshly slaughtered birds – a widespread belief holds that live birds purchased at the market are fresher and of superior taste compared to chilled or frozen products. This consumer attitude has historically limited the growth of processed poultry products.

Processed chicken: a small but growing share

Processed chicken meat constitutes only around 7-10% of total chicken sales volume, but this segment has been growing at 15-20% per year, driven by the expanding middle class, urbanization, and the growth of fast-food chains, hotels, and institutional food service. About 1% of total poultry production is processed further into ready-to-eat or ready-to-cook value-added products.

The transition is underway, albeit slowly. Major poultry integrators have established modern HACCP-certified processing plants and are expanding their retail presence through branded chilled and frozen products, franchised shops, and home delivery services. Integrated production and the transition from live birds to chilled and frozen products are considered key factors for the future growth of India’s poultry industry, as they would reduce price volatility, improve hygiene, and open up export markets.

Why the industry is more organized than other livestock sectors

The Indian poultry industry has undergone a paradigm shift from a backyard activity to a major commercial enterprise in just about four decades – an unusually fast transformation. Several factors set poultry apart from cattle, buffalo, and small ruminant sectors:

Short production cycles: Broilers reach slaughter weight in just 5-6 weeks, meaning capital is recovered quickly and production can respond rapidly to market demand. Private sector leadership: Unlike dairy or cattle, the poultry sector’s transformation was driven largely by private enterprise with minimal government intervention, giving it flexibility and efficiency. Vertical integration: The integrator model tightly links genetics, feed, veterinary care, and marketing – ensuring consistent quality and cost control. Scale economies: As farm sizes increased – from a few hundred birds per cycle to standard units of 5,000-50,000 birds – economies of scale dramatically reduced production costs. The production of eggs and broilers has been rising at 8-10% per annum, compared to just 1.5-2% for agricultural crops – a gap that reflects the sector’s organizational and technological edge.

Economic significance and employment

The total value of India’s poultry sector reached Rs. 162 billion in 2005-06, accounting for 10.5% of the total value of livestock output and 2.6% of the agricultural sector as a whole. More than three million people directly or indirectly depended on the sector for income and employment at that time. That number has grown significantly – over 5 million people are now engaged in the poultry sector either directly or indirectly, spanning farm workers, hatchery staff, feed mill operators, traders, and retailers.

The backyard poultry segment, in particular, plays an outsized social role. With more than 30 million farmers engaged in backyard poultry, it functions as a low-barrier entry point into the agricultural economy for the poorest rural households – providing both nutrition and a supplementary income stream. This farming system, predominantly managed by rural women, contributes to food security, poverty alleviation, and empowerment in ways that commercial poultry production cannot easily replicate.

The road ahead: modernizing processing

The most significant challenge – and opportunity – for India’s poultry sector lies in modernizing its meat processing infrastructure. A shift to mechanical and more hygienic processing is integral to transitioning the broiler industry to a chilled/frozen-product market, which would reduce waste, improve food safety, stabilize prices, and unlock export potential. Consumer education about the hygiene risks of live-bird wet markets will be central to driving this transition.

The India poultry market reached INR 2.30 trillion in 2024 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12.60% through 2033, driven by population growth, rising incomes, urbanization, and the expanding food service sector. The foundations of a more processing-oriented industry – HACCP-certified plants, branded cold chains, quick-service restaurant demand – are already in place. The pace at which consumer preferences shift from live birds to packaged products will largely determine how quickly the sector matures.
