India may be widely known for its cattle and poultry sectors, but pig farming has quietly held its ground as a critical component of the country’s livestock economy. The piggery sector supports the livelihoods of millions – particularly in rural and tribal communities – and is now drawing increasing attention from policymakers, entrepreneurs, and agricultural planners. Understanding how India’s pig population has evolved, where it is concentrated, and what opportunities it presents is essential for anyone interested in the future of the country’s meat industry.

How India’s pig population has changed over time

India’s pig population showed a steady upward trend for much of the late 20th century, growing from 12.78 million in 1992 to approximately 13.52 million in 2003. However, this trajectory did not hold. According to the Government of India’s Livestock Census (2012), the pig population declined by 7.5 percent to 10.3 million between 2007 and 2012, with disease outbreaks cited as a major contributing factor. By the 20th Livestock Census conducted in 2019, the population had further settled at 9.06 million – a 12 percent decline from 2012 levels.

In the global context, this number is modest. The global pig population as of 2022 stood at around 784.20 million, and India accounts for only a small fraction of that. Yet despite lower headcount figures, pigs account for roughly 5 percent of India’s total meat production, making them a meaningful – if underutilised – contributor to the country’s protein supply.

Where pigs are concentrated in India

Pig farming in India is not evenly spread. It is geographically concentrated, with specific states and regions accounting for a disproportionate share of the total population. The eastern and north-eastern regions together account for approximately 63 percent of the country’s pig population.

Assam and the north-eastern belt

Assam leads all Indian states in pig numbers, with a population of over two million as of 2019, followed by Jharkhand and Meghalaya. The north-eastern region as a whole – comprising states like Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura – is deeply intertwined with pig farming both culturally and economically. Pig rearing is an important means of livelihood for tribal populations in the north-eastern region and is woven into the socio-cultural fabric of the region. Pork features prominently in local cuisine, and demand for it remains high within these communities. The north-eastern region collectively contributes 49 percent of India’s total pig population.

Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal

Outside the north-east, Uttar Pradesh is home to 1.33 million pigs, and it actually leads national pork production with a 30 percent share, followed by the north-eastern states at 25 percent, and Bihar at 15 percent. West Bengal, with 0.65 million pigs, also maintains a notable presence. In terms of population density, Delhi records the highest concentration of pigs per square kilometre, reflecting the demand pressures of a large urban consumer base.

Indigenous vs. crossbred pigs: a shifting composition

The majority of India’s pig population consists of indigenous animals, but this balance is gradually changing. Indigenous breeds account for 79 percent of the total pig population, while exotic and crossbred animals make up the remaining 21 percent. A more detailed breakdown from breed-level data indicates that the Indian pig population consists of 29.40 percent descript pigs – comprising 2.80 percent exotic, 18.10 percent crossbred, and 8.20 percent indigenous – while 70.60 percent are non-descript pigs yet to be categorised.

The challenge with indigenous breeds is their productivity. Indigenous breeds are typically small-sized, slow-growing, produce small litters, and yield lower-quality pork – India’s average meat yield from indigenous breeds is around 35 kg per animal, far below the world average of approximately 78 kg. Popular indigenous breeds include Ghungroo (found largely in West Bengal), Niang Megha (Meghalaya), Ankamali (Kerala), and Tenyi Vo (Nagaland), each with distinct physical traits adapted to local environments.

The rise of crossbreeding

To address productivity limitations, there has been a clear and deliberate shift towards crossbred pigs, particularly in the north-eastern states. The population of crossbred and exotic pigs increased by 12.7 percent between 2003 and 2012. Exotic breeds such as Hampshire, Large White Yorkshire, Duroc, and Landrace are commonly used for crossbreeding to improve growth rates and meat yield. State-level schemes, such as Arunachal Pradesh’s Arun Pig Development Scheme, aim to introduce crossbreeds adapted to local climatic conditions while improving productivity and piglet care management. The goal is not to replace indigenous genetics entirely, but to find a productive balance between local resilience and improved output.

Despite this upward trend in crossbreds, the declining population of indigenous pigs relative to exotic and crossbred animals signals the need for immediate attention to conserve indigenous genetic resources before they are further eroded.

Why pig farming matters for rural livelihoods

Pig farming in India is not just about meat production – it is deeply linked to the economic survival of marginalised communities. Approximately 70 percent of India’s pigs are reared under traditional low-input, smallholder production systems, where animals are fed on available grains, vegetables, food scraps, and kitchen waste. This makes pig farming accessible to households with minimal capital. Pigs have inherent advantages as a livestock species: high fecundity, early maturity, short generation intervals, and good feed conversion efficiency make them ideal for small and marginal farmers.

Women’s self-help groups play a crucial role in pig farming, with opportunities across pork processing units and the broader value supply chain. In several north-eastern states, pig rearing is one of the few income-generating activities available to women in rural settings. Recognising this, government programmes have increasingly channelled support towards women and economically weaker sections in the piggery sector.

Government policy and institutional support

The Government of India has taken structured steps to develop the piggery sector. Under the National Livestock Mission (NLM), a dedicated Sub-Mission on Pig Development in the North-Eastern Region was introduced, providing support for State Piggery Farms and importation of germplasm to benefit all eight states of the region. The NLM also extends entrepreneurship support more broadly: under the NLM Entrepreneurship Development Programme, a 50 percent capital subsidy of up to โ‚น30 lakh is available for establishing pig breeding farms with a minimum of 100 sows and 10 boars.

At the policy level, the Ministry of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries has issued guidelines for a State Pig Breeding Policy aimed at genetic improvement, maintenance of crossbred pigs at the farm level, and development of breeding infrastructure and piglet care management. State-level schemes like the Meghalaya Piggery Development Scheme complement these central initiatives by tailoring support to local conditions.

Export potential and the push for organised production

One of the most compelling arguments for restructuring India’s pig industry is its untapped export potential. Currently, India’s pork exports remain minimal – India’s pig meat exports in 2023 were valued at approximately $384,000, with Malaysia, the Netherlands, and Turkey among the top destinations. This figure pales in comparison to the country’s buffalo meat export dominance.

However, the geographic advantage of north-eastern India positions it as a potential pork export hub. APEDA has highlighted strong demand for pork from neighbouring countries like Myanmar and Bhutan, as well as Southeast Asian markets including Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, and Hong Kong. New pork processing infrastructure is being developed in the region – including a facility in Assam’s Nazira town capable of processing 400 pigs per day – to help meet international hygiene and quality standards.

The pork industry in north-east India is currently largely unorganised, with smallholders selling pigs to middlemen who then supply informal markets with limited hygiene practices. Scaling up requires a transition to organised production – with better cold chain infrastructure, certified processing units, traceable supply chains, and stronger extension services reaching farmers at the grassroots level.

Challenges holding the sector back

The piggery sector faces a set of persistent structural challenges. Disease is perhaps the most pressing. African Swine Fever (ASF), first detected in India in 2020, spread rapidly across north-eastern states, severely impacting pig populations and rural economies. States like Mizoram and Manipur recorded significant losses in both pig deaths and culling in subsequent years. Classical Swine Fever (CSF) has also been a long-standing challenge, with a pooled prevalence of around 35 percent reported in Indian pigs.

Beyond disease, insufficient slaughter and processing facilities, limited quality feed, weak supply chain infrastructure, absence of a national traceability programme, and low levels of breed quality upgrades continue to constrain productivity. Cultural perceptions around pork hygiene further limit demand in many parts of the country, though these attitudes are gradually evolving, especially in urban markets where processed pork products such as sausages, bacon, and ham are gaining popularity.

The road ahead for India’s piggery sector

India’s pig population story is one of potential constrained by structural gaps. The raw ingredients for growth are in place – a large smallholder base with traditional knowledge, culturally entrenched demand in high-consumption regions, growing urban appetite for processed pork, and increasing government investment. What remains is the work of connecting these elements: improved breed quality, disease-resilient farming systems, organised value chains, and access to export markets.

The north-eastern region, in particular, sits at an inflection point. With the right combination of policy support, processing infrastructure, and farmer training, it could realistically become India’s primary pork production and export zone. With rising incomes and improving lifestyles expected over the coming decade, domestic demand for quality pork is also projected to grow – giving the sector both a near-term local opportunity and a longer-term global one.
