Choosing the right poultry variety is one of the most important decisions in backyard farming. Unlike commercial breeds that depend on controlled housing, high-cost feed, and intensive management, backyard poultry birds need to survive on minimal inputs – scavenging for food, tolerating heat, resisting predators, and still delivering consistent eggs and meat. India’s agricultural research institutions have spent decades developing breeds specifically for these conditions. The result is a set of scientifically improved, field-tested varieties that are transforming the livelihoods of millions of rural farming families.

Why specialized backyard poultry varieties matter

Traditional village poultry – the common “desi” hen – is hardy but produces very few eggs, typically 50 to 80 per year. Commercial layers and broilers, on the other hand, require expensive feed, climate-controlled housing, and intensive veterinary care that most smallholder farmers simply cannot afford. Improved backyard poultry varieties bridge this gap – they are designed to perform under low-input, scavenging conditions while delivering far greater productivity than native birds. These varieties are dual-purpose, meaning farmers get value from both eggs and meat from the same flock, making backyard farming a genuinely viable source of supplementary income and household nutrition.

CARI varieties: bred for India’s diverse backyard conditions

The Central Avian Research Institute (CARI), Izatnagar, Uttar Pradesh, operating under ICAR, has developed a range of dual-purpose backyard poultry varieties. Each one addresses a specific challenge – predation, heat stress, disease susceptibility, or poor nutrition – that farmers face in real-world conditions.

CARI Debendra

CARI Debendra is a medium-sized, dual-purpose bird developed by crossing a coloured synthetic broiler line (as the male parent) with Rhode Island Red (as the female parent). It reaches a moderate body weight of 1,200 g by eight weeks of age, with a feed conversion ratio of 2.5-2.6, making it economically efficient to raise. Its meat has lower carcass and abdominal fat compared to standard commercial broilers, which appeals to health-conscious consumers and commands better prices in local markets. Annual egg production stands at 190-200 eggs, and under a semi-scavenging system, 100 Debendra birds can yield 20,000 brown-shelled eggs per year, generating a meaningful net return for rural households.

CARI Nirbheek

CARI Nirbheek is arguably the most recognized of all CARI backyard varieties. It is a cross between the Indian native breed Aseel and CARI Red, released in 2003-2004 for commercial exploitation under scavenging and backyard systems. CARI Nirbheek directly addresses the core problems of backyard poultry production – predation, adverse climate, substandard nutrition, and poor productivity – through its hardy nature, coloured plumage, longer shanks, lean body, higher growth rate, strong immunity, and solid egg production. Its fighting instincts and majestic gait, inherited from the Aseel parent, make it capable of defending itself against predators – a critical trait under free-range conditions.

In terms of performance, males reach approximately 1,850 g and females around 1,350 g at 20 weeks of age, with females laying 170-200 eggs annually after reaching sexual maturity at 170-180 days. The variety has been adopted in 16 states across India, and over 13.35 lakh germplasms have been supplied to farmers, NGOs, and government bodies over the past two decades. FAO and the National Livestock Mission have also recognised it as a suitable crossbreed for tropical and subtropical climates.

CARI Upcari

CARI Upcari was developed using Indian native chicken crossed with a Frizzle plumage line. The Frizzle feather – which curls outward rather than lying flat – is not merely decorative. This unique plumage structure enables faster heat dissipation, making Upcari especially well-adapted to tropical and arid zones where heat stress is a limiting factor for poultry productivity. These multicoloured birds have a single comb, medium body size, and a typical desi fowl appearance that is familiar and acceptable to rural communities. Annual egg production reaches around 180-220 eggs, making Upcari one of the higher egg-producing varieties in the CARI backyard lineup.

CARI Hitcari

CARI Hitcari is a cross between Indian native naked neck chicken and CARI Red. The naked neck trait means these birds carry 30-40% fewer feathers on their bodies, which helps them adapt to hot and humid climates – making them particularly well suited to coastal regions. They are larger in build compared to some other backyard varieties, with males reaching around 1,756 g and females around 1,320 g at 20 weeks. Annual egg production of CARI Hitcari is around 200 eggs, with fertility rates of approximately 92%, making this variety a strong performer in humid lowland and coastal backyard settings.

Giriraja and Swarnadhara: KVAFSU’s contribution to backyard farming

Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fishery Sciences University (KVAFSU), Bangalore, released two dual-purpose coloured plumage chicken varieties – Giriraja in 1989 and Swarnadhara in 2005 – both of which have gained wide acceptance among farmers and researchers across India.

Giriraja

Giriraja was developed at the College of Veterinary Science, Bangalore, specifically for backyard rearing. Giriraja females lay approximately 130-150 eggs per year, with each egg weighing 52-55 g. The eggs are brown-shelled, thicker than standard commercial eggs, and carry a hatchability rate of 80-85%, allowing farmers to raise their own replacement stock without purchasing chicks. Day-old chicks weigh 42-45 g. The birds show better growth rates compared to unimproved local varieties, and as natural scavengers, they forage efficiently on insects, green foliage, farm waste, and kitchen scraps. For backyard rearing, a flock of five hens and one cock is considered ideal.

Swarnadhara

Swarnadhara, released 16 years after Giriraja, is a further improvement. Swarnadhara hens lay 180-190 eggs annually, which is 15-20 eggs more per year than Giriraja. Each egg weighs 55-60 g with hatchability of 80-85%. Hens attain body weights of around 3 kg and cocks around 4 kg, reaching maturity between weeks 22 and 23. Despite its higher productivity, Swarnadhara is actually smaller in physical size than Giriraja – a deliberate breeding choice, since the lighter build and long shanks help birds escape predators more easily in open backyard environments. Eggs can be stored for 8-10 days at room temperature in summer and up to 15 days in winter, which matters considerably in villages without refrigeration. The birds are sturdy, long-lived, and require no special housing or intensive care.

Among all improved backyard poultry varieties available in India today, Vanaraja stands out as the most widely adopted. Vanaraja was developed by the Project Directorate on Poultry (PDP), Hyderabad, and is a dual-purpose, multi-coloured bird specifically intended for free-range farming in rural and tribal areas.

The male parent is a coloured Cornish strain developed for moderate juvenile body weight, long shanks, and good immune competence. The female parent is a synthetic multi-coloured meat strain bred for high egg production, better egg size, high hatchability, and immune competence. The result is a bird with attractive, desi-like colouration that is highly acceptable in local markets, combined with productivity that far exceeds native village poultry.

Vanaraja pullets produce around 160-180 eggs per laying cycle with minimal supplementary feeding, and the variety has a general resistance to common poultry diseases as well as the ability to withstand adverse climatic conditions. This combination of disease tolerance, climate resilience, and solid output makes Vanaraja a practical choice even for first-time or resource-limited farmers. Germplasm of Vanaraja is available as fertile eggs, day-old chicks, or grown chicks from the Project Directorate on Poultry, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. Importantly, local desi hens can serve as brooders for Vanaraja eggs, eliminating the need for mechanical incubators in village settings.

Key traits that make these varieties suitable for low-input systems

All the varieties discussed above share several defining traits that make them specifically useful in backyard farming contexts, as opposed to generic commercial breeds:

Dual-purpose productivity: Each variety delivers both eggs and meat, ensuring that farmers get returns from the flock throughout the bird’s productive life, not just at slaughter.

Climate adaptability: Whether the adaptation mechanism is Frizzle plumage (Upcari), naked neck (Hitcari), or long shanks (Nirbheek, Vanaraja), each variety has a biological trait that helps it cope with India’s wide range of heat, humidity, and seasonal variation.

Disease resistance: Unlike commercial hybrids that require strict biosecurity, these varieties carry stronger innate immunity, with recorded fertility rates between 88-92% and high survivability under field conditions.

Predator defence: Varieties like Nirbheek and Swarnadhara have physical and behavioural traits – fighting instinct, lighter body weight, active movement – that reduce predation losses, which is one of the biggest causes of mortality in open backyard systems.

Low feed dependency: These birds can scavenge effectively for insects, seeds, and kitchen scraps, reducing dependence on purchased commercial feed, which keeps input costs low and makes the enterprise accessible to landless and marginal farmers.

Choosing the right variety for your conditions

No single variety is universally best. The right choice depends on local climate, available natural feed resources, market preferences, and the primary production goal – eggs or meat. Hitcari and Upcari are better suited to hot coastal or arid climates. Nirbheek performs across a wider geographic range and excels in FCR and anti-predation resilience. Giriraja and Swarnadhara are strong choices where egg production is the priority and the farmer wants the ability to hatch their own replacement chicks. Vanaraja is the go-to choice for tribal and remote rural areas where market access for commercial inputs is limited and desi-type birds are preferred by local buyers.

For farmers starting out, the simplest guidance is to source germplasm from official institutions – ICAR-CARI Izatnagar for CARI varieties, KVAFSU Bangalore for Giriraja and Swarnadhara, and ICAR-Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad for Vanaraja – to ensure genetic quality and authentic breed performance.
