Geese are among the most self-sufficient poultry species you can raise. They thrive on pasture, require minimal infrastructure, and are naturally resistant to many common diseases. But that doesn’t mean management is an afterthought. From the moment goslings hatch to their first full grazing season, every decision you make – housing, brooding, feeding, health care, and incubation – shapes the health and productivity of your flock. Here’s what sound geese management actually looks like in practice.

Housing: simple but purposeful
Geese don’t need elaborate housing. What they do need is shelter that protects them from predators, wind, and extreme weather, while keeping access to grazing areas easy. A simple, draft-free structure works well, with about 4-6 square feet of indoor space per adult bird. Unlike chickens, geese don’t roost – they prefer to rest on the ground, so clean, dry bedding is essential. Wood shavings work well as flooring material; avoid hay or straw inside the shelter, as it absorbs ammonia from droppings and hay can carry harmful spores that cause respiratory problems.
Fencing matters more for predator control than containment. A fence about one metre (around 3 feet) in height is generally sufficient to keep geese contained, since most domestic breeds are too heavy to fly well. However, fencing should extend underground or include a wire apron to stop digging predators from getting in. Geese are vulnerable to foxes and other ground predators despite their size, so a lockable, predator-proof enclosure for nighttime is a must.
Artificial brooding: similar to chicks, but get them on grass fast
When natural brooding isn’t available, goslings can be raised under artificial heat in a brooder – and the setup is very similar to brooding chicks. The starting temperature near the heat source should be around 90ยฐF (32ยฐC), reduced by 5-10 degrees per week until it reaches 70ยฐF (21ยฐC) at around five to six weeks of age, when supplemental heat is no longer needed. Because goslings are larger than chicks, hover height should be raised 3-4 inches higher than you would for chickens.
The most important aspect of brooding is ensuring goslings stay warm, dry, and protected from predators, especially at night. Check on them frequently during the first few weeks to make sure they’re comfortable and have access to feed and water at all times. When brooder temperature is right, goslings spread out evenly across the floor. If they huddle under the heat source, they’re too cold; if they crowd away from it, they’re too warm.
Getting goslings onto grass
One of the most important differences between brooding goslings and brooding chicks is how quickly you should move them outdoors. When the weather is mild, goslings can be let out to graze on pasture when they are only a few days old. Grass is their natural food, and early access to pasture develops both their grazing instincts and their immune systems. On warm, sunny days, supervised outdoor time can begin in the first week. That said, goslings lack adult waterproofing until their feathers fully develop, making them vulnerable to getting chilled when wet – so keep them off wet grass and out of rain during those early weeks.
By five to six weeks of age, goslings can subsist almost entirely on good pasture, though some supplemental feed is still recommended until they are fully feathered. This early transition to grazing is one of the key management advantages geese offer over other poultry.
Geese as grazers: making the most of pasture
Geese are exceptional grazers. When kept on pasture, they consume not only grass but also insects, snails, and worms, which can supply around 10% of their daily protein needs. This makes them highly efficient foragers and reduces dependence on purchased feed significantly. Some producers report feed cost reductions of close to 50% when geese are raised on pasture compared to full confinement.
Geese prefer short, tender grass – ideally no more than 10 cm (about 4 inches) tall. If pasture has grown long, it can be grazed down by cattle or sheep first, with geese following on. Orchards are particularly well-suited for geese, providing shade in summer and lush grass growth underneath the trees. On a well-managed pasture, stocking densities of 20 to 40 geese per acre are generally sustainable. Rotational grazing helps maintain pasture quality and prevents overgrazing.
Geese are also well-known as weeder birds. They have been used to control weeds in a wide variety of crops, including asparagus, fruit trees, strawberries, and ornamental flowers. When used for weeding, grain is typically withheld during the day and offered only in the evening to keep the birds hungry and actively foraging.
Why debilling is never done in geese
Debeaking (also called debilling) is a common practice in chickens to reduce feather pecking and cannibalism in confined flocks. In geese, it is never performed – and for good reason. A goose’s bill is its primary grazing tool. Trimming or removing the bill tip would directly impair its ability to graze effectively, undermining the very trait that makes geese valuable and low-cost to raise. Geese are cleaner and more self-sufficient than ducks, and their grazing instincts can dramatically cut down on feed costs – but only if their bills remain intact. Their natural feeding behaviour also keeps bills properly shaped through regular wear, so no intervention is required.
Health management: hardy birds with one key vulnerability
Ducks and geese are hardy birds not susceptible to many common poultry diseases, which makes them straightforward to manage compared to chickens or turkeys. However, their foraging lifestyle – constant ground contact, grazing, and drinking from natural water sources – exposes them to one consistent health risk: internal parasites.
Deworming: a non-negotiable routine
Because geese spend significant time foraging and drinking from outdoor water sources, they are particularly vulnerable to picking up internal parasites. The most important of these is gizzard worm (Amidostomum), which can be fatal in geese if untreated. Other parasites include roundworms, capillaria (hairworms), and gapeworms. Worming geese twice a year – typically in spring and autumn – is the standard recommendation, with additional treatments if a bird appears unwell or is losing weight. Geese grazing in the same pasture year-round, or kept at high stocking densities, are at greater risk and may need more frequent attention.
Signs of worm infestation include lethargy, weight loss, reduced appetite, and in severe cases, coughing or bloody droppings. Commonly used anthelmintics include flubendazole (Flubenvet), which can be mixed into feed and administered over seven consecutive days, and fenbendazole (Panacur), which is effective against gastrointestinal worms. Always consult a vet for correct dosage and to observe appropriate withdrawal periods if eggs or meat are intended for consumption.
Beyond deworming, maintaining good pasture hygiene, rotating grazing areas, and limiting contact with wild birds all reduce the risk of reinfection. Periodic faecal sampling is the most reliable way to confirm whether your flock actually carries a worm burden before treating, avoiding unnecessary chemical use.
Incubation and hatching: why humidity makes all the difference
Goose eggs have specific incubation requirements that differ notably from chicken eggs, and getting humidity right is the central challenge. Goose eggs require higher humidity during incubation, and these elevated humidity requirements make it unsuitable to set waterfowl eggs alongside chicken eggs in the same incubator.
For forced-air incubators, the recommended temperature for the first 27 days is 37.7ยฐC, with a relative humidity of 50-55%. Eggs should be turned at least every two hours and cooled briefly each day from day 4 to day 27 – a practice that mimics the natural behaviour of geese, which leave the nest daily to bathe and return with moisture in their feathers. Goose eggs typically take 28 to 35 days to hatch, depending on the breed and incubation method.
Natural incubation: the preferred approach
Given the humidity challenges of artificial incubation, natural incubation by a broody goose is widely preferred, especially for smaller operations. A broody goose will often achieve better hatch rates than an artificial incubator, as she naturally regulates temperature and humidity through her own behaviour, including daily bathing. Medium-weight breeds tend to make better mothers than heavy breeds, which can be clumsy with eggs.
If natural incubation is the only method available but no broody goose is present, eggs can be set under a broody hen, duck, or turkey. A broody hen can typically incubate 4-6 goose eggs, a duck can manage 8-10, and a turkey up to 14. Importantly, goslings raised by a broody goose benefit from an immediate connection to the flock – geese are known to adopt and raise goslings collectively, even those that are not their own offspring.
Feeding supplements and water requirements
On good pasture during the growing season, adult geese may need little to no supplemental feed. When pasture quality is poor, or during winter months, supplemental grain such as wheat or a poultry layer pellet can maintain body condition. Geese prefer short grass around three inches tall and will graze on various grass and clover species, with the notable exception of alfalfa, which they consistently avoid. Fresh greens like cabbage and lettuce can supplement their diet when pasture is limited.
Water access is critical at all stages. Geese need water deep enough to submerge their heads fully, which keeps their nostrils clean and healthy. Goslings need water deep enough to dip their entire bills to keep their nares clear – a shallow tray with an inch of water works well in the brooder. On pasture, ponds or troughs that allow head submersion are ideal.
