Good records are the foundation of informed farm management. Without reliable records, a farmer cannot detect issues early, validate what’s working, or identify where costs are creeping up. Key decisions – from when to replace a flock, to adjusting a feed formula, to planning vaccination schedules – all depend on having accurate, up-to-date information at hand.

Traditionally, poultry farmers recorded data by hand in logbooks or paper registers. While this method is still used in small operations, it has clear limitations – data is hard to search, errors are common, and generating summaries takes time. Computers changed this entirely.

  • Data migration: If transitioning from manual records, transfer all existing data carefully to the new system, verifying accuracy during the process.
  • Staff training: Ensure all farm workers who enter or use data are properly trained, and provide refresher training when software is updated.
  • Daily data entry: Record data every day – waiting a week allows details to be forgotten, and gaps make trend analysis unreliable. Assign one responsible person to manage records consistently.

The shift to computerized record keeping does not have to happen all at once. Many farms start with a simple spreadsheet and move to dedicated software as the need and familiarity grows.
