The moment day-old broiler chicks arrive at your farm is one of the most critical points in the entire production cycle. These chicks have often endured several hours of transport after hatching, depleting their energy reserves and exposing them to stress before they’ve even taken their first sip of water. Research shows that the first seven days of a broiler’s life are the most critical period for growth, with seven-day body weight directly predicting final slaughter weight. Getting the brooder house fully ready before they step off that truck is not a courtesy – it’s a biological necessity.

Why advance preparation matters so much

Broiler chicks are physiologically immature when they arrive. Their immune systems are still developing, they cannot regulate their own body temperature, and their digestive systems are not yet fully functional. According to Aviagen’s Broiler Handbook 2025, successful early management should produce a seven-day body weight that is at least 4.5 times the chick’s hatch weight – a benchmark consistently linked to improved flock performance. Missing that target almost always traces back to inadequate preparation before the chicks arrived. Every element of preparation, from sanitation to heat to litter, works together to give these vulnerable birds the controlled environment they need to thrive.

Cleaning and disinfecting the brooder house

A clean house is the single most important disease-prevention measure in broiler production. Pathogens left behind from a previous flock can challenge incoming chicks at the exact moment when their defenses are weakest. The Poultry Site emphasizes that even if the previous flock showed no outward signs of illness, thorough cleaning must still be completed without exception – pathogens can be present without visible symptoms.

Step-by-step cleaning procedure

Start by removing all old litter, manure, leftover feed, and feathers from the house. Poultry Affairs recommends thoroughly washing all surfaces – floors, walls, and ceilings – using a high-pressure washer, then scrubbing away built-up grime. Work from top to bottom and from back to front to avoid recontaminating clean areas. After washing, patch any holes or gaps in the structure, since entry points for rodents and pests are direct channels for disease. Once all surfaces are dry, apply an approved broad-spectrum poultry disinfectant following manufacturer instructions. All feeders, drinkers, and equipment must be included in this step – not just the house structure itself.

Aviagen’s best practice guidelines also recommend flushing water lines with clean fresh water before chick placement and cleaning bulk feed bins and connecting pipes. Water biofilm in lines is a common but easily overlooked source of contamination.

Fumigating the house

After disinfection, fumigation provides a final layer of pathogen control that liquid disinfectants cannot achieve in every crack and crevice. Cobb Genetics advises that fumigation is most effective when the house is slightly damp and warmed to a minimum of 21ยฐC (70ยฐF), with relative humidity between 65 and 70 percent. Formalin fumigation – typically using formaldehyde and potassium permanganate – is a widely used method. The Poultry Site notes that after fumigation, the house must remain sealed for 24 hours with clear “No Entry” signs displayed, and must then be thoroughly ventilated to reduce formalin levels to below 2 ppm before anyone enters. Critically, fumigation must be completed well before chicks arrive so all residual gases have dissipated – fumigant exposure is toxic to day-old chicks.

Preparing good-quality litter

Once the house is clean and fumigation gases have cleared, the next step is laying down fresh litter. Litter performs several essential functions simultaneously: it absorbs moisture from droppings, provides insulation between chicks and the cold concrete floor, and gives birds a comfortable surface to walk and rest on. Wood shavings are widely recommended for their high absorbency and good insulation properties. Rice hulls are another option, being lighter and less dusty. Avoid fine, dusty materials, which can cause respiratory irritation in young birds, and never reuse litter from a previous flock. H&N International explicitly warns that old litter increases disease pressure and can directly raise chick morbidity and mortality.

Litter depth typically ranges from 5 to 10 cm depending on the season and flooring type. The litter must be dry and free from mold before it is spread. The US Poultry Industry Manual highlights that floor temperature can be more critical than air temperature for day-old chicks, since they lose body heat through direct contact with cold litter via their bare feet. Chicks placed on cold litter will cluster around feeder lids within just two hours of placement – a clear indicator that floor warmth cannot be overlooked.

Setting up and testing heating equipment

Temperature management is arguably the most critical aspect of the entire pre-arrival checklist. Newly hatched chicks are poikilothermic – they rely on their environment to maintain their body temperature because their own thermoregulation is not yet functional. Any failure in heating equipment after the chicks arrive can cause serious losses before the problem is even diagnosed.

Preheating the house

Alabama Cooperative Extension recommends preheating the brooder house to an ambient temperature of at least 90ยฐF (32ยฐC) and maintaining a minimum floor temperature of 86ยฐF (30ยฐC) for 48 hours before chick placement. Preheating does more than just warm the air – it brings the concrete floor, litter, walls, and equipment up to the required temperature. H&N International advises that in cold weather, preheating should begin 48 hours before arrival; in warm weather, 24 hours is generally sufficient.

Checking all equipment

Every heater, thermostat, temperature sensor, fan, and lighting fixture must be tested before chicks arrive. Fivet Animal Health notes that brooders and heaters must be confirmed as fully functional before arrival – discovering a faulty heating element after chicks are already in the house leaves no margin for error. Temperature and humidity sensors should be placed at chick height, not suspended at adult human height where readings may differ significantly. EW Nutrition recommends targeting 28-30ยฐC at floor level and 60-70% relative humidity in the brooding area when chicks enter, as relative humidity exceeding 70% causes wet litter and excessive caking.

For spot brooding setups, use brooder guards – ideally 50 cm high – placed about 75-130 cm from the edge of each brooder. These guards confine chicks near the heat source and, if made from solid cardboard, also protect them from drafts. Air speed at chick level should stay below 0.15 m/second to prevent chilling from drafts, which are a common but preventable early mortality factor.

Preparing feeders and drinkers

Feed and water must be immediately accessible the moment chicks are placed. The US Poultry Industry Manual states that water is the most immediate need when chicks arrive, since they can easily dehydrate during hatching, processing, and transport. Drinkers should be filled several hours before chick placement so the water warms to room temperature – drinking cold water can chill chicks and suppress early feed consumption.

Fivet Animal Health recommends providing chick feeders at a rate of one feeder per 75 chicks, with two supplementary drinkers per 100 chicks. Supplementary chick-font drinkers should not be placed directly under heat sources. If nipple drinkers are part of the system, reduce water pressure for the first few days so that droplets form at the nipple tips – this stimulates chicks to drink. Automatic pan feeders should be set so that chick-level access is easy, and supplementary feed trays or cardboard spreads with starter crumbles ensure that even the smallest, weakest chicks can find feed without competing with the system.

Checking feed quality and supply

EW Nutrition advises ordering starter feed to ensure delivery one to two days before chick placement. Starter crumbles or mini-pellets are the appropriate form for day-old broilers because young chicks lack some of the digestive enzymes needed to process harder feed. The proportion of fine particles (under 1 mm) in sieved crumbles should remain below 10%, as excessive fines reduce feed intake and early growth performance.

Securing the house against drafts and structural weaknesses

Before bringing in litter and equipment, inspect the entire house structure. Seal any gaps in walls, roofing, ventilation curtains, and doors. Any holes or gaps can allow drafts that chill chicks and entry points for rodents or wild birds that carry disease. The house should achieve draft-free ventilation – fresh air exchange without direct air currents hitting the chick level. Check that all window and curtain openings are operable so ventilation can be adjusted after placement based on conditions.

Arranging an emergency power source

Power outages during the first week of brooding can be fatal. A generator or backup power supply is an essential part of pre-arrival preparation, not an optional upgrade. Heating systems, ventilation fans, and lighting all depend on continuous power during the most vulnerable period of the flock’s life. Test any backup power system during the preheating phase so there is still time to service it before chicks arrive. Having fuel reserves on hand and a clear protocol for switching to backup power is part of responsible flock management.

Anti-stress supplements in drinking water

Chicks that have traveled long distances arrive in a state of dehydration and physiological stress. Adding electrolytes and vitamins to drinking water on arrival day supports recovery and helps restore the fluid balance lost during transport and hatching. Freedom Ranger Hatchery notes that electrolytes offer a fast and effective way to reduce travel-related stress, restore hydration, and support vital functions from day one. Common formulations combine electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium) with vitamins D3, E, and B-complex to optimize energy metabolism and appetite stimulation.

Some producers also add glucose or raw sugar to drinking water on the first day, providing an immediate energy source to chicks that have depleted their yolk sac reserves during transport. Bivatec recommends allowing chicks to drink for two to three hours before they are introduced to solid feed after arrival, ensuring adequate hydration before the digestive system begins processing nutrients. Always offer the electrolyte solution alongside plain water in a separate container so chicks are not over-supplemented.

A preparation timeline to follow

Effective chick arrival preparation follows a structured timeline rather than a rushed last-minute effort. Work backward from the chick arrival date: complete cleaning, repairs, and disinfection first, then fumigate and ventilate, then lay fresh litter, then install and test all equipment, then begin preheating 24-48 hours before arrival, then fill drinkers and feeders within a few hours of placement. Aviagen’s guidelines specify that thorough cleaning and disinfection must be completed and verified at least 24 hours before chick arrival – not during the same morning the birds are due. Rushing any step in this sequence creates gaps that can cost the entire flock’s early performance.

On the day of arrival, unload chicks quickly and place them gently and evenly across the brooding area. Leave them to settle for one to two hours with immediate access to feed and water, then check crop fill, temperature, humidity, and chick distribution and make any necessary adjustments. Chick behavior is itself a reliable temperature gauge: chicks that cluster tightly under the heat source are cold; chicks that spread to the edges of the brooder ring and pant are too hot; chicks distributed evenly and actively exploring indicate the environment is correct.
