India and the coconut palm share a deep, centuries-old bond. Known as Kalpavriksha – the “tree of heaven” – the coconut provides food, fibre, oil, and livelihoods across the country’s tropical coastal belt. Today, that relationship has grown into a formidable economic force. India is among the world’s top three coconut-producing nations, alongside Indonesia and the Philippines, and the crop touches everything from rural kitchen gardens to billion-dollar export markets. Understanding how coconut production operates in India means understanding a sector that sustains millions of families while feeding global demand for one of agriculture’s most versatile crops.

India’s standing in global coconut production

India’s scale of coconut production is significant. During FY24, India produced 21,373.62 million nuts, maintaining its position as one of the world’s largest producers. The crop’s economic weight is equally impressive – it contributed around USD 3.72 billion to India’s GDP during FY23. At the farm level, national productivity reached 9,871 nuts per hectare in FY24, one of the highest rates among major producing countries. The coconut palm supports food security and livelihood opportunities for more than 12 million people in India, making it far more than just an agricultural commodity – it is a social and economic lifeline.

The major coconut-producing states

Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh together account for over 91% of India’s total coconut production. Each state brings distinct strengths to the industry.

Karnataka – the top producer

Karnataka ranked first in coconut production during 2023-24, with an output of 6,151 million nuts – nearly 28.78% of the national total. The state cultivates coconuts across approximately 5.64 lakh hectares, with the districts of Tumakuru, Hassan, and Mandya being the most productive. Karnataka’s success is largely attributed to integrated pest management techniques, well-spaced planting, and active state government support for processing infrastructure.

Tamil Nadu – leading in productivity

Tamil Nadu ranked second in 2023-24 with a production of 6,091.98 million nuts, contributing 28.50% of national output. The state is particularly strong in processing – districts like Coimbatore, Tirupur, and Salem house major facilities for oil extraction, copra manufacturing, and desiccated coconut production. Pollachi in Tamil Nadu is known as the “Coconut City of India” and serves as a major coconut trading hub. Tamil Nadu has also invested significantly in drip irrigation for coconut cultivation in water-scarce inland regions.

Kerala – the cultural heart of coconut cultivation

Kerala may have slipped to third place in output, but it remains the state with the largest area under coconut cultivation – 7.65 lakh hectares, representing 35.37% of the national share. The state produced 5,522.71 million nuts in 2023-24. Kerala is also the historic hub of the coir industry and continues to produce much of India’s coconut oil. However, Kerala’s productivity of 7,287 nuts per hectare falls below the national average of 9,170, a gap that has prompted policy attention in recent years.

How coconut supports the national economy

The coconut industry’s contribution to India’s economy extends well beyond the farm gate. It supplies raw materials to several distinct industrial sectors, each with its own employment base and export potential.

Food and beverages

Coconut is integral to the cuisines of South India, used in everything from curries to confectionery. Domestically, over half of India’s coconut production is used for making copra and coconut oil. Beyond traditional uses, the sector has expanded into a wide range of processed goods – coconut water, coconut milk, coconut sugar, desiccated coconut, and coconut-based snacks. In the first eight months of FY25 alone, desiccated coconut exports surged 300% to USD 9.6 million, reflecting strong international appetite for processed coconut products.

Coconut oil – a multi-sector commodity

Coconut oil is one of the most valuable outputs of the industry. It serves as a cooking medium in states like Kerala and Goa, and is widely used in bakery production, hair oil manufacturing, and soap making. Virgin coconut oil (VCO) has seen rising global demand due to its health and wellness properties, particularly in nutraceutical and cosmetic markets. VCO is now among India’s key export products, alongside desiccated coconut and coir goods.

The coir industry

Coir – the fibre extracted from the coconut husk – underpins one of India’s oldest agro-based industries. India accounts for more than two-thirds of global coir and coir products production, and along with Sri Lanka, supplies about 90% of the world’s coir fibre. The coir industry employs approximately 5.5 lakh people in India, predominantly women in rural areas. Products range from mats, mattresses, ropes, and yarn to geotextiles used in erosion control and civil engineering. India exports coir and coir products to 121 countries, with the USA and China among the top buyers.

By-products and zero-waste potential

One of the coconut palm’s defining characteristics is that virtually nothing goes to waste. Coconut shells are used to produce charcoal, activated carbon, ladles, and spoons. Coconut leaves are used in composting and organic inputs. Coir pith, a by-product of fibre extraction, is processed into organic fertilizer. This zero-waste model not only improves farm economics but aligns well with sustainability objectives increasingly demanded by global buyers.

Cultivation practices and innovations

India’s productivity gains over the past few decades have not happened by accident. National coconut productivity increased from around 6,000 nuts per hectare to 10,000 nuts per hectare, driven mainly by improved varieties and the adoption of scientific cultivation practices.

High-yielding varieties and hybrid palms

Research institutions such as the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University have developed high-yielding dwarf and hybrid varieties. In places like Anaimalai in Tamil Nadu, dwarf Γ— tall hybrid palms regularly produce 250-300 tender coconuts per tree, far above the national average. These varieties are more compact, bear fruit earlier, and show better resistance to certain pests, making them attractive to commercial farmers.

Intercropping and integrated farming

Monocropping coconut is an inefficient use of land, with land use efficiency estimated at just 22% in monoculture systems. Intercropping with crops like banana, cocoa, pepper, and spices significantly improves resource use, diversifies income, and reduces pest pressure. Multi-storied cropping systems combined with soil test-based fertilizer management have recorded substantially higher coconut equivalent yields and net incomes per hectare compared to monoculture approaches, according to research in coastal Odisha.

Government support and institutional framework

The Coconut Development Board (CDB), established under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, plays a central role in coordinating research, providing financial assistance, and promoting exports. On World Coconut Day 2025, the CDB revised its financial assistance schemes, sharply raising the subsidy under the Area Expansion Programme from USD 73.63 per hectare to USD 634 per hectare. The Union Budget 2026-27 further announced a dedicated Coconut Promotion Scheme to rejuvenate old, unproductive coconut gardens and expand cultivation along coastal areas.

Challenges facing the coconut sector

Despite consistent growth, India’s coconut industry faces a set of persistent challenges that growers and policymakers must actively manage.

Pest and disease pressure

Coconut palms are vulnerable to several serious threats. The rhinoceros beetle, red palm weevil, and black-headed caterpillar cause direct physical damage to trees and fruit. More recently, the rugose spiralling whitefly (RSW) has emerged as a year-round threat across South India’s coconut belt, causing black sooty mould that blocks photosynthesis and sharply reduces yields. Farmers who once harvested 200-300 nuts per hybrid tree are now reporting outputs of just 100-120 nuts. Since 2016, national coconut output has fallen over 10% and productivity has declined by 14%, with the whitefly identified as a contributing factor. Kerala has long battled root wilt disease, for which no effective treatment has yet been found despite decades of research.

Climate change and shifting suitability

Climate change poses both immediate and long-term risks to coconut cultivation. Irregular rainfall patterns and unseasonal storms have disrupted traditional farming practices, especially in coastal areas. Research modelling future climate scenarios found that the area climatically suitable for coconut cultivation in India could decline from 15% to around 11-12% of national territory by 2050 and 2070, with the steepest losses in south interior regions of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Temperatures in plantation regions are projected to rise by 1.6-2.1Β°C by 2050, increasing drought stress and reducing yields without adaptive management.

Price volatility and aging palms

The price of coconut is heavily linked to coconut oil prices, which are characterized by recurring and often violent fluctuations. When prices fall, farmers tend to neglect gardens, which increases pest and disease vulnerability. Aging plantations are another structural concern – older trees produce fewer nuts, and replanting requires capital that many smallholder farmers lack. The new Coconut Promotion Scheme specifically targets this problem by incentivizing the replacement of unproductive old palms with certified high-yielding material.

Product diversification and export growth

The shift from treating coconut as an oilseed to recognizing it as a functional and nutritional food has opened new commercial pathways. Between FY16 and FY22, India’s total coconut exports grew at a compound annual growth rate of 13%. During FY23, coconut product exports crossed USD 452.19 million, a growth of 9.8% from the previous year. India exports coconut and coconut products to more than 140 countries, with Vietnam, the UAE, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and the USA among the top destinations.

Value-added products are driving this export momentum. Key exports include virgin coconut oil, desiccated coconut, coir products, and coconut shell charcoal. Domestically, the market for coconut water, coconut milk powder, coconut sugar, and coconut-based snacks is expanding rapidly as health-conscious urban consumers seek natural food alternatives. Technologies developed at research institutions now enable value addition from coconut water to make vinegar, squash, and jelly, creating new micro-entrepreneurship opportunities across rural South India.

The road ahead for Indian coconut farming

India’s coconut sector has demonstrated resilience and adaptability over decades of changing agricultural conditions. The key to sustaining that trajectory lies in simultaneously addressing the threats of climate stress and pest pressure while expanding value-added processing and market access. Strengthening research into heat-tolerant and disease-resistant genotypes, scaling up precision farming tools such as drone-based monitoring and soil sensors, and encouraging farmer producer organisations to access better processing infrastructure are all part of the path forward. The theme for World Coconut Day 2025 – “Boosting Innovation and Revitalising Coconut Sector Through Sustainable Action and Partnership” – captures this direction well. India has the land, the expertise, and the institutional framework to lead globally. The challenge is ensuring that millions of smallholder coconut farmers remain viable participants in that success.
