For decades, Indian farmers have made selling decisions based on word-of-mouth, local trader quotes, or outdated price information. This lack of reliable, timely market data has been one of the biggest disadvantages in agricultural marketing – leading to distress sales, unfair pricing, and poor bargaining power. To tackle this problem head-on, the Government of India launched AGMARKNET (Agricultural Marketing Information Network), an ICT-based portal that delivers real-time market information to farmers, traders, and policymakers across the country. What is AGMARKNET?

AGMARKNET stands for Agricultural Marketing Information Network. It is a central sector scheme launched in March 2000 by the Union Ministry of Agriculture. The portal is designed to collect, standardize, and disseminate agricultural market data – including daily commodity prices and arrival quantities – from wholesale markets (mandis) spread across India.

The scheme is implemented by the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection (DMI) with technical support from the National Informatics Centre (NIC). It works in coordination with State Agricultural Marketing Boards (SAMBs), Directorates, and individual Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) at the ground level.

In simple terms, AGMARKNET is the government’s effort to ensure that no farmer has to sell blindly. When a farmer in Madhya Pradesh can check what price wheat is fetching in a mandi in Punjab – before loading their truck – that’s AGMARKNET at work.

Key objectives of AGMARKNET

AGMARKNET was built with several clear goals in mind:

Nationwide information network: The primary objective is to build a country-wide electronic network for the speedy collection and dissemination of market data. This includes prices, commodity arrivals, and trend information from regulated markets across all states and union territories.

Farmer empowerment through ICT: AGMARKNET aims to orient farmers toward using digital tools for better marketing decisions. By providing data in multiple regional languages, the portal ensures that language is not a barrier to accessing critical information.

Improving marketing efficiency: When accurate, real-time information flows freely between markets, it reduces information asymmetry – the gap between what traders know and what farmers know. This leads to fairer price discovery and more competitive markets.

Supporting research and policy: The data collected through AGMARKNET serves as a resource for policymakers, researchers, and academic institutions working on agricultural marketing reforms, demand forecasting, and food security planning.

How does AGMARKNET work?

The functioning of AGMARKNET follows a structured, multi-level data flow system. Understanding this process helps clarify how raw mandi data reaches a farmer’s screen.

Data collection at market nodes

At the ground level, each networked wholesale market (mandi) acts as a market node. Designated marketing personnel at these nodes record daily information on commodity prices (minimum, maximum, and modal prices) and arrival quantities. This data is uploaded to the AGMARKNET portal using computers or, more recently, mobile devices.

State-level coordination

Each state has a nodal officer appointed by the State Agricultural Marketing Board or Department. This officer ensures that market-level officials upload data regularly and that all nodes remain operational. State-level monitoring helps maintain data consistency and quality.

Central portal and dissemination

All the data from market nodes flows into the AGMARKNET central portal, where it is standardized and made available to the public. Users – whether farmers, traders, policymakers, or researchers – can access commodity-wise, variety-wise, and market-wise price and arrival data. The portal also generates weekly and monthly trend reports for important commodities, helping users track price movements over time.

The data is available in English and 8 regional languages, which is a critical feature for a country as linguistically diverse as India.

Incentive mechanism for data uploaders

To encourage consistent data reporting, AGMARKNET provides a monetary incentive of โ‚น1,000 per month to market-level personnel who upload data for more than 20 days in a month. A similar incentive is given to state-level monitoring officials. This performance-linked payment system, verified through the portal’s built-in monitoring system, is key to keeping the data pipeline active.

Scale and coverage of AGMARKNET

When AGMARKNET was first conceived, it aimed to connect around 7,000 agricultural wholesale markets across India. Over the years, the network has expanded significantly:

According to a December 2025 statement in Parliament by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, 4,367 mandis have been linked to the AGMARKNET portal to display real-time price information. The portal covers more than 350 commodities and 2,000 varieties.

Additionally, the portal was technologically upgraded to AGMARKNET Portal 2.0 in November 2025. Alongside this, the government launched the AGMARKNET 2.0 Mobile App, which allows on-the-spot entry of mandi data by market officials and gives farmers direct access to price and arrival information on their mobile phones.

What information does the AGMARKNET portal provide?

AGMARKNET is not just a price ticker. It serves as a single-window platform for a wide range of agricultural marketing information:

Daily prices and arrivals: The core feature – users can check minimum, maximum, and modal prices along with arrival volumes for any commodity across connected mandis.

Price trend reports: Weekly and monthly trend reports help users understand how prices are moving for specific commodities, enabling better forecasting and selling decisions.

Market profiles: The portal provides profiles of individual mandis, including their infrastructure details, location, and types of commodities traded.

Agricultural marketing reforms: Information on state-level APMC reforms, model acts, contract farming provisions, and other policy updates is available.

Links to commodity exchanges: AGMARKNET is linked with online commodity exchanges, providing users with futures price data alongside spot market prices.

GIS-based atlas: A geographic information system-based atlas provides visual data on commodity production, movement, storage, and market locations – useful for both planning and logistics.

Who benefits from AGMARKNET?

AGMARKNET was designed to serve multiple stakeholders in the agricultural marketing ecosystem.

Farmers

Farmers are the primary beneficiaries. By checking prices across multiple mandis before selling, they can choose the market that offers the best return. This is especially valuable during peak harvest seasons when supply gluts can push prices well below the cost of production. Instead of accepting the first offer from a local trader, a farmer with access to AGMARKNET data has real bargaining power.

Traders and commission agents

Traders use AGMARKNET to track supply patterns and identify markets with high or low arrivals. This helps them plan procurement strategies and manage inventory more effectively.

Policymakers and government agencies

For government officials, AGMARKNET data is essential for monitoring market trends, designing interventions during price crashes or spikes, and fine-tuning policies like Minimum Support Prices (MSP). As noted by agricultural technology analysts, the data also supports evidence-based policymaking in agricultural marketing.

Researchers and academic institutions

The historical price and arrival data available on AGMARKNET is a valuable resource for agricultural economists, market researchers, and universities studying pricing trends, market efficiency, and supply chain dynamics.

AGMARKNET and its relationship with e-NAM

AGMARKNET is often discussed alongside e-NAM (electronic National Agriculture Market), and it’s important to understand how the two relate. While AGMARKNET is primarily an information dissemination platform – it tells you what prices are prevailing in different mandis – e-NAM is a trading platform that enables online bidding and electronic payment for agricultural commodities.

According to the government’s parliamentary statement, 1,522 mandis have been onboarded on the e-NAM portal, which also displays real-time mandi prices and offers a free mobile-based price information service for 247 notified commodities. Together, AGMARKNET and e-NAM form a complementary system: AGMARKNET provides the information foundation, and e-NAM builds a transactional layer on top of it.

Challenges facing AGMARKNET

Despite its achievements, AGMARKNET is not without limitations. Several challenges affect its reach and effectiveness on the ground.

Inconsistent data quality

Not all connected mandis report data consistently. Variability in reporting standards, data entry errors, and delayed uploads can reduce the reliability of the information available on the portal. While the incentive mechanism helps, coverage gaps remain in certain states and remote markets.

Digital literacy gaps

A significant portion of Indian farmers – particularly smallholders and marginal farmers – have limited digital literacy. Navigating a web portal or even a mobile app remains a challenge for many, especially older farmers who are unfamiliar with smartphone-based tools. The Indian government’s annual spending on agricultural data collection runs into hundreds of millions of dollars, yet much of this data remains underutilized because the intended users cannot easily access it.

Poor internet connectivity in rural areas

Even when farmers are willing and able to use digital tools, unreliable internet and mobile network coverage in many rural areas remains a barrier. Without consistent connectivity, real-time data access becomes impractical – and by the time a farmer reaches a connected area, the price may have already changed.

Limited awareness

Many farmers are simply unaware that AGMARKNET exists or what it can do for them. Outreach and awareness campaigns at the village level have not kept pace with the platform’s expansion. As a result, the benefits of the portal remain concentrated among relatively better-connected, better-educated farming communities.

Recent developments and the road ahead

The upgrade to AGMARKNET 2.0 in late 2025 represents a significant step forward. The new version features a mobile-friendly interface, faster data reporting through the companion mobile app, and improved data visualization tools. The integration of additional mandis is an ongoing process, with the government targeting broader coverage.

Looking ahead, several developments could further strengthen AGMARKNET’s impact:

Integration with other agricultural databases: Linking AGMARKNET data with datasets on crop production, land use, weather, and export-import trends could create a comprehensive data warehouse for demand-driven agricultural planning.

AI and predictive analytics: Combining historical price data from AGMARKNET with artificial intelligence models could enable short-term and long-term price forecasting, helping farmers decide not just where to sell but also when to sell.

Private sector partnerships: Strategic alliances with telecom companies and agritech startups can help disseminate AGMARKNET data through SMS alerts, voice messages, and WhatsApp-based services – reaching farmers who may never open a web portal.

Expanding multilingual support: While the portal already supports 8 regional languages plus English, extending support to more local dialects and simplifying the interface for low-literacy users will be essential for true last-mile reach.

AGMARKNET has laid a strong foundation for transparent, data-driven agricultural marketing in India. Its success will ultimately depend on how effectively the system bridges the gap between data availability and data accessibility – ensuring that the farmer standing in a remote village field gets the same market intelligence as a trader sitting in a city office.
