India is the world’s largest producer of bananas, generating over 36.6 million tonnes annually – more than triple the output of the second-largest producer. Much of this success comes down to one critical factor: variety selection. India cultivates an extraordinary range of banana varieties, each shaped by the soil, climate, and culinary traditions of the region where it thrives. From the sour-sweet Poovan of Tamil Nadu to the starchy Nendran of Kerala, these varieties don’t just fill market baskets – they define regional food cultures. Whether you’re a farmer choosing what to plant, a student studying horticulture, or simply curious about what goes into that banana on your plate, understanding India’s commercial banana varieties is the starting point.

How banana varieties are classified commercially

Commercially, bananas in India are classified into two broad types: dessert varieties and culinary varieties. Dessert varieties are eaten fresh when ripe – think Dwarf Cavendish, Poovan, and Rasthali. Culinary varieties, on the other hand, have starchy fruits that are used in their raw, unripe form – Nendran, Monthan, and Karpuravalli fall into this group. This classification matters a great deal for farmers because it directly determines where and how the produce will be sold, what price it will command, and what agronomic practices are required.

Each variety also belongs to a genomic group – such as AAA, AAB, or ABB – indicating its genetic lineage from wild Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana species. These groups influence not just fruit characteristics, but also disease susceptibility, yield potential, and suitability for processing or fresh consumption.

Major commercial banana varieties in India

Dwarf Cavendish (AAA)

Dwarf Cavendish, locally known as Basrai in Maharashtra, is the most widely cultivated commercial banana variety in India. It is grown extensively for both table and processing purposes in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Bihar, and West Bengal, and is also popular in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The plant’s dwarf stature is a practical advantage – it is less prone to wind damage compared to taller varieties. Average bunch weight is 15-25 kg, with 6-7 hands and about 13 fruits per hand. Even when fully ripe, the thick fruit rind retains a slightly greenish colour. When grown with drip irrigation and high-density planting, this variety becomes highly productive. Its key weakness is high susceptibility to Sigatoka leaf spot disease in humid tropical conditions, which limits cultivation in wetter regions.

Robusta (AAA)

Robusta is a semi-tall variety primarily grown for table use in Tamil Nadu and parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra. It produces large, well-developed bunches weighing about 25-30 kg, with dark green fruits turning bright yellow on ripening. The pulp is very sweet with a good aroma, but its poor keeping quality makes it unsuitable for long-distance transportation – a factor growers must weigh carefully when targeting distant markets. Like Dwarf Cavendish, Robusta is highly susceptible to Sigatoka leaf spot in humid conditions.

Poovan (Mysore AAB)

Poovan is one of the most commercially significant banana varieties across India. It is grown throughout the country with location-specific ecotypes: Palayankodan in Kerala, Karpura Chakkarakeli in Andhra Pradesh, and Alpan in the North-Eastern Region. Tamil Nadu leads in its production due to favourable climatic and soil conditions. Poovan is also commercially cultivated for its leaves, which are widely used in Tamil Nadu and parts of Kerala. The fruit is slightly acidic and firm, with a characteristic sour-sweet aroma, and turns to attractive golden yellow on ripening. It has good keeping quality and is resistant to fruit cracking – a practical advantage during post-harvest handling. However, susceptibility to Banana Bract Mosaic Virus (BBMV) and Banana Streak Virus (BSV) remains a significant production challenge.

Nendran (AAB)

Nendran is Kerala’s most iconic banana variety, holding strong cultural and economic importance in the state. Commercial cultivation of Nendran has also picked up rapidly in Tamil Nadu in recent years. A typical bunch has 5-6 hands weighing 12-15 kg. The fruits have a distinct neck with thick green skin that turns buff yellow on ripening, and notably, they remain starchy even when fully ripe – making them ideal for processing into banana chips, steamed preparations, and traditional Kerala dishes like pazham pori (banana fritters). Nendran is, however, highly susceptible to BBMV, nematodes, and borers, requiring careful pest management throughout the crop cycle.

Rasthali (Silk AAB)

Rasthali, also known as the Silk banana, is commercially grown in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, and Bihar. Its unique fruit quality makes it a highly prized cultivar for table use. Fruits are yellowish green during development but turn pale to golden yellow after ripening. The pulp is very tasty with a good aroma. The main production challenges include a longer crop duration, severe susceptibility to Fusarium wilt, and the need for bunch covers to prevent sun cracking – all of which add to the cost of cultivation.

Red banana (AAA)

Red banana is among the most prized and highly relished varieties in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Its commercial cultivation is prominent in the Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts of Tamil Nadu. In Bihar and other northern regions, it is known as Lal Velchi, while in Karnataka it goes by Chandra Bale. The pseudostem, petiole, midrib, and fruit rind are all distinctively purplish red. Bunches weigh 20-30 kg under good management, and the fruits are sweet, orange-yellow coloured, and pleasantly aromatic. High susceptibility to bunchy top, Fusarium wilt, and nematodes requires careful agronomic management.

Ney Poovan (AB)

Ney Poovan is the most preferred diploid cultivar in India, under large-scale commercial cultivation in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. In Kerala, it was traditionally a backyard variety but is now shifting to large-scale cultivation. The plant is slender, bearing bunches of 15-30 kg after 12-14 months. The dark green fruits turn golden yellow with a very good shelf life – a notable commercial advantage. The fruit is highly fragrant, sweet, and firm. Ney Poovan is tolerant to leaf spot disease but susceptible to Fusarium wilt and banana bract mosaic virus.

Monthan (ABB)

Monthan is a widely cultivated processing variety, fairly tall and robust, bearing bunches of 18-20 kg after about 12 months. The fruits are bold, stocky, knobbed, and pale green in colour, with the skin usually remaining green. Beyond its culinary use as a cooked vegetable, Monthan’s pseudostem core is a relished vegetable with recognized medicinal properties. It is immune to Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV) and tolerates saline soils, but susceptibility to Fusarium wilt is a key limitation. Newer clones like Kanchi Vazhai and Chakkia are gaining commercial popularity in Tamil Nadu.

Karpuravalli (ABB)

Karpuravalli is notable for being considered the sweetest among Indian bananas. Its commercial cultivation is spread across central and southern districts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, with cultivation in Bihar under the name Kanthali. It is a tall, robust plant suited to marginal lands and low-input conditions, with ash-coated golden yellow fruits that have good keeping quality. Karpuravalli is drought and salt-tolerant, making it a resilient choice for challenging growing environments. It is highly susceptible to wilt disease, however, which limits its use in wilt-prone areas.

Safed Velchi

Safed Velchi is a good-quality table variety cultivated mainly in the Thane and Nashik districts of Maharashtra, and under areca nut garden shade in the South Kanara districts of Karnataka. The plant has a slender yellowish green pseudostem with a reddish petiole margin. The fruits are large with very thin, papery skin and white, firm, sweet flesh. An average bunch weighs about 12 kg with around 150 fruits per bunch, and the crop matures in about 13 months.

Hill banana

Hill banana refers to a group of varieties adapted to higher elevation conditions, primarily cultivated in the hilly tracts of Tamil Nadu. Varieties such as Namaran, Ladan, Manoranjitham, Sirumalai, and Virupakshi are recommended for hill banana cultivation and perform best at higher altitudes. Virupakshi, for instance, develops its characteristic flavour only at elevated growing zones. In mixed farming systems, it serves well as a shade plant for young coffee. These varieties are vigorous and hardy, though not particularly high-yielding, and are grown primarily for local and niche markets.

Gros Michel

Gros Michel, often referred to as “Big Mike,” was once the dominant variety in global banana trade before Panama disease devastated its commercial cultivation in the 1950s, leading to its replacement by the Cavendish group. In India, Gros Michel is still grown on a small scale in select irrigated zones, particularly in Kerala, and is valued for its rich flavour and large bunch size. While no longer commercially significant at the national level, it retains relevance in specific regional markets and in germplasm preservation.

Variety selection and regional adaptation

No single banana variety suits all conditions across India. The choice of variety varies significantly by state: Karnataka favours Robusta, Rasthali, Dwarf Cavendish, and Monthan; Kerala relies on Nendran, Palayankodan, and Robusta; Andhra Pradesh grows Dwarf Cavendish, Rasthali, Robusta, and Monthan; Tamil Nadu produces Robusta, Poovan, Virupakshi, Rasthali, Karpuravalli, and Nendran; and Maharashtra prioritizes Dwarf Cavendish and Basrai. In the Northeast, Assam has its own distinct set including Jahaji, Chini Champa, Malbhog, Bhimkol, and others suited to that region’s climate.

Disease resistance is an increasingly important selection criterion. Panama wilt (Fusarium oxysporum), Sigatoka leaf spot, BBTV, and BBMV pose the greatest threats to banana plantations across India. Varieties like Monthan offer immunity to BBTV, while Ney Poovan’s tolerance to leaf spot makes it more resilient in certain conditions. Conversely, popular varieties like Rasthali and Poovan carry significant wilt susceptibility, which growers must manage through soil treatment, tissue-cultured planting material, and proper crop rotation.

India’s banana cultivation supports over 25,000 farmers and provides employment to more than 50,000 people across the supply chain. As export ambitions grow – with India aiming for $1 billion in banana exports within five years and recent trial shipments to the Netherlands opening a potential European corridor – variety selection will become even more strategic. Export-oriented growers are increasingly favouring Grand Naine (G9), a Cavendish group variety valued for its uniform appearance, long shelf life, and international market acceptance. Meanwhile, domestic markets continue to show strong demand for traditional varieties like Poovan and Nendran, where taste and cultural familiarity drive purchasing decisions.

The role of variety diversity in sustainable banana production

India’s banana industry draws strength from its varietal diversity. While global banana production is increasingly dominated by a single variety – the Cavendish – India’s multi-variety cultivation system serves as a buffer against catastrophic crop loss. Cavendish bananas are genetically uniform since they reproduce via clones, making them extremely vulnerable to disease outbreaks and fungal infections – a vulnerability that scientists warn could eventually threaten their commercial viability. India’s diverse portfolio of varieties, each with different genetic backgrounds and disease profiles, means that a disease outbreak devastating one variety does not necessarily sweep through all banana cultivation in the country.

Furthermore, varieties suited to marginal lands and low-input conditions – like Karpuravalli and Monthan – ensure that banana cultivation remains viable even in areas with poor soils or limited irrigation. This agronomic resilience, rooted in varietal diversity, is one of the most valuable assets of India’s banana production system and something worth preserving as commercial pressures push for uniformity.
