India’s bee product industry has been on a remarkable growth trajectory. With honey production doubling to over 1.5 lakh metric tonnes and exports tripling in recent years, the country has firmly positioned itself as a major player in the global apiculture trade. But honey is only one part of the picture. Products like beeswax, propolis, royal jelly, bee pollen, and bee venom are attracting strong demand from international buyers – particularly in the USA, Europe, Japan, and the Middle East. For Indian beekeepers and exporters, the international market presents significant opportunities, provided they understand the regulations, quality benchmarks, and buyer preferences that govern global trade.

Why the global demand for bee products is rising

The global bee products market was valued at roughly $8.3 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $13.7 billion by 2033, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.8%. This growth is driven by consumers seeking natural health remedies, clean-label food ingredients, and sustainable personal care solutions.

Honey remains the dominant segment, accounting for over 60% of global market revenue. It is used not just as a natural sweetener but also in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and cosmetics. Monofloral varieties – like eucalyptus, litchi, acacia, and mustard honey – now command premium prices, especially when backed by certifications of purity and origin.

Propolis is the fastest-growing segment in the bee products market. Its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties have made it a sought-after ingredient in functional health supplements, throat lozenges, and skincare. The global propolis market alone was valued at $0.73 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach $1.12 billion by 2032.

Beeswax is widely used in cosmetics, candles, polishes, and pharmaceutical coatings. Royal jelly finds application in anti-aging creams, dietary supplements, and wellness products. Bee venom, used in apitherapy and luxury skincare, is a niche but fast-expanding market – projected to grow from $416.7 million in 2025 to $678.8 million by 2035. India is leading this segment’s growth in Asia, with a 5.7% CAGR driven by traditional medicine practices and pharmaceutical research.

Bee pollen, rich in proteins, vitamins, and antioxidants, is gaining recognition as a functional superfood. Markets in Japan, Germany, and the USA are particularly receptive to pollen-based dietary supplements and health foods.

India’s honey export landscape

India has emerged as one of the top global honey exporters. According to APEDA data, India exported more than 74,400 metric tonnes of natural honey during 2023-2024. During January to October 2025, honey exports were about 40% higher than the same period the previous year.

The United States is by far India’s largest buyer, accounting for approximately 78% of total honey exports. Other key destinations include Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bangladesh, and Canada. Forecasts from research studies suggest the USA’s share in India’s honey exports could remain around 82% through 2027, while Saudi Arabia, Morocco, and Bangladesh are expected to see marginal increases.

Challenges on the horizon

India’s heavy dependence on the US market carries significant risk. The US Department of Commerce has imposed anti-dumping duties on honey imports, alongside a blanket 50% tariff that has made Indian honey less competitive. Before the tariff, Indian honey was priced about 10% lower than honey from Argentina and Vietnam – a gap that the new duties have essentially erased.

This situation underscores the importance of market diversification. Indian exporters must actively explore opportunities in Europe, Japan, and the Middle East rather than relying almost entirely on a single buyer market.

Competitive pricing and India’s advantage

India’s honey remains competitively priced at around $2.11 per kilogram – significantly lower than Brazil’s at $3.62/kg, or the UK’s supply to Ireland at approximately $6/kg. To maintain competitiveness, India reduced its minimum export price for natural honey to $1,400 per tonne. This price advantage, combined with growing global supply shortfalls from Canada, the USA, and Ukraine, creates an opening for Indian exporters to establish long-term trade relationships in new markets.

Key international markets for Indian bee products

The European Union

The EU is the world’s largest honey importer, with projected imports of 3.6-3.7 lakh metric tonnes in 2025, valued at over $1.1 billion. Germany, in particular, is a high-value market with strong consumer demand for organic, certified, and traceable honey. German buyers are currently sourcing honey from nearby EU suppliers because intra-EU trade offers consistent quality and shorter logistics chains. However, competitive pricing and strong quality assurance from non-EU origins – including India – can open this market.

The EU also has growing demand for propolis and beeswax in the pharmaceutical and personal care industries. Germany has a long tradition of apitherapy and natural healing, which supports demand for products like propolis, royal jelly, and bee venom.

The United States

Despite tariff challenges, the USA remains the second-largest honey importer globally, with estimated imports of 2.6-2.7 lakh metric tonnes in 2025, valued at over $900 million. US import prices have risen to about $3,000 per metric tonne, driven by anti-dumping duties, supply constraints, and tariff barriers. The North American bee products market overall was valued at $3.19 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach $6.14 billion by 2032.

Japan and East Asia

Japan’s honey import price averaged around $3,013 per metric tonne in 2024, and domestic prices remain 12-15% higher than import prices. This means imports are likely to stay the more cost-effective option for Japanese buyers. Japan values purity, low moisture content, and consistent quality – criteria that Indian honey can meet with proper processing and quality control.

The Middle East

Saudi Arabia and the UAE are established markets for Indian honey. The UAE’s share in India’s exports is forecast to be around 4.7% in 2026. The Middle East’s demand for honey is driven by cultural and dietary practices, and India’s geographic proximity gives it a natural logistics advantage.

Quality standards that govern international trade

Meeting international quality standards is non-negotiable for any exporter looking to compete globally. Two regulatory frameworks are particularly important: the Codex Alimentarius and the EU Honey Directive.

Codex Alimentarius standard for honey

The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), established jointly by the FAO and WHO, sets the global baseline standard for honey (CXS 12-1981, revised in 2001 and amended through 2022). The CAC Standard for Honey is regarded as the minimum benchmark that any trader entering the international market should achieve. Key composition criteria include:

Moisture content: Maximum 20% for most honey types. High moisture leads to fermentation and reduces shelf life. Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF): Not more than 40 mg/kg after processing, though honey from tropical regions may have an HMF limit of up to 80 mg/kg. Diastase activity: Generally not less than 8 Schade units; for honeys with naturally low enzyme content, not less than 3 Schade units. Free acidity: Maximum 50 milliequivalents acid per 1,000 grams. Sugars: Fructose and glucose content, sucrose limits, and electrical conductivity are all measured to verify authenticity.

While Codex standards are not mandatory for governments, many countries adopt them as the basis for their national regulations. The standard also mandates that honey must be free from visible mould, inorganic or organic foreign matter, and toxic substances.

EU Honey Directive and regulations

The EU Honey Directive (Council Directive 2001/110/EC) sets stricter requirements than Codex for honey sold within the European market. It covers sugar content, moisture, water-insoluble content, electrical conductivity, free acid, diastase activity, and HMF. Importantly, European buyers often demand standards that go beyond the legal minimum – for instance, an HMF content of just 10 mg/kg for non-tropical honeys, instead of the regulatory ceiling of 40 mg/kg.

In 2024, the EU adopted Directive (EU) 2024/1438, which introduces stricter rules for origin tracing and labelling. From June 2026, honey blends sold in the EU must display the country of origin in descending order along with the percentage share of each origin. This is a direct response to the widespread problem of honey adulteration – the EU’s Joint Research Centre found that 46% of collected honey samples in Europe were suspected of being adulterated.

To export honey and other apiculture products to the EU, countries must be listed in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2021/405. They must also submit an annual Residue Monitoring Plan that demonstrates effective testing for veterinary drug residues, pesticides, and contaminants. Each shipment requires a health certificate signed by an authorised official of the exporting country.

FSSAI and India’s regulatory role

On the domestic side, India’s Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) sets the rules for honey quality and labelling within the country. For export, products must comply with both FSSAI standards and the regulations of the destination country. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) plays a central role in facilitating exports by providing market intelligence, organising buyer-seller meets, and managing residue monitoring programmes.

Making Indian bee products export-ready

Investing in quality infrastructure

Export-grade bee products require modern processing, testing, and packaging facilities. Honey must be tested for moisture content, HMF levels, diastase activity, antibiotic residues, pesticide residues, and heavy metals. Investing in NABL-accredited laboratories and HACCP-compliant processing units is essential. For EU-bound shipments, exporters also need to ensure TRACES (Trade Control and Expert System) registration.

Organic and specialty certifications

Organic honey commands a premium in international markets. To sell organic honey in Europe, it must be certified under the EU’s organic certification scheme. This means beehives must be placed in areas free from chemical contamination within a three-kilometre radius, and diseases must be managed with natural solutions rather than chemical antibiotics. Organic honey faces stricter residue testing – buyers typically apply a zero tolerance policy for pesticide residues.

Monofloral honeys from India – including litchi, mustard, eucalyptus, and sunflower varieties – can fetch premium prices if supported by pollen analysis confirming their botanical origin. Specialty certifications like GI (Geographical Indication) tags add further value. For example, Ramban Sulai honey from Jammu and Kashmir, made from wild basil, has gained wider recognition after receiving a GI tag.

Traceability and packaging

International buyers increasingly require full “hive-to-shelf” traceability. This means documenting every stage – from beekeeping and harvesting to processing and packaging – using labelling or digital tracking systems. For EU exports, stainless steel drums are strongly preferred over plastic containers because they reduce contamination risks and offer better protection during transit.

Government support and initiatives

The Indian government has taken several steps to support the beekeeping sector’s growth. Under the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM), the Khadi and Village Industries Commission has distributed over 2.25 lakh bee boxes, creating rural employment and boosting production. India’s honey output has grown from 76,000 metric tonnes about a decade ago to over 1.5 lakh metric tonnes today.

States like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal are the largest honey producers, while Karnataka has set up modern honey processing and tracking facilities benefiting thousands of farmers. These initiatives, combined with the growing organised retail and e-commerce penetration, are positioning India’s beekeeping sector for sustained growth.

The road ahead for Indian bee product exports

India’s bee product industry sits at an inflection point. The global supply of honey is under pressure – Ukraine’s production has dropped sharply due to the war, Canada has faced severe colony losses, and US production has declined due to varroa mite infestations. These disruptions create space for reliable exporters like India to step in.

However, the opportunity comes with responsibilities. Indian exporters must diversify away from the US-centric export model, invest in quality and traceability systems, pursue certifications that unlock premium markets, and build the infrastructure to handle value-added bee products like propolis and royal jelly – not just bulk honey.

The countries and regions that consume Indian bee products – the EU, Japan, the Middle East, and increasingly Africa and Southeast Asia – are raising their quality bars. Exporters who meet these standards will not just sell products; they will build lasting trade partnerships.
