India’s relationship with farming stretches back more than 9,000 years. Long before modern inputs, machinery, or agronomic science entered the picture, Indian farmers worked the land using inherited knowledge, simple tools, and an intimate understanding of their local ecology. This system – what we broadly call traditional farming – sustained one of the world’s oldest civilizations for millennia. But it also had deep structural limitations, and understanding both its strengths and its vulnerabilities is essential for anyone studying how Indian agriculture evolved into what it is today.

What traditional farming in India actually looked like
Traditional farming in India was defined by its heavy reliance on land and human labor, with minimal use of capital or technology. Traditional farming is broadly understood as a primitive way of farming that involves labor-intensive methods, traditional knowledge, natural resources, organic fertilizers, and old customs and cultural beliefs. Farmers worked smallholdings, often less than two acres, using hand-crafted tools made from locally available materials – wooden ploughs, hoes, sickles, and digging sticks.
Rather than being a single uniform practice, traditional farming in India encompassed several distinct regional methods:
- Subsistence farming: The most widespread form, where families grew just enough to feed themselves, with little or no marketable surplus. Farming in India was primarily characterized by its reliance on the monsoon, a large labor force, and generally small landholdings, often of a subsistence nature.
- Mixed or integrated farming: Traditionally, man, animals, trees, and agricultural fields were inseparable and harmonious components of a single farming system. Livestock provided draft power and manure; trees provided fodder and fuel.
- Shifting cultivation (Jhum/Podu): Practiced by tribal communities in hilly regions such as Odisha and Northeast India, this involved clearing a patch of forest, farming it for a few seasons, then moving on to allow the land to regenerate.
- Polyculture systems like Barahnaja: The Barahnaja system from Uttarakhand involved cultivating 12 or more crops together, enhancing food security and soil health.
The roots of traditional agricultural knowledge
Ancient Indian farmers used organic and sustainable farming practices to maintain the soil’s long-term fertility, including crop rotation, the use of organic manures, and irrigation techniques like digging wells and canals. These weren’t random practices – they were the product of centuries of observation and trial-and-error refinement.
In the centuries before chemical methods were found, farmers protected their crops through fumigation with milk, ghee and jaggery, spraying decoctions of bitter herbs and barks, and scattering ashes and sesamum seed paste at the roots of trees. Pest and disease management was entirely natural, using biodiversity and plant-based compounds.
Water management was similarly sophisticated. Farmers dug canals and tanks through cooperative effort, and there are many historical references to dikes and bunds built to prevent floodwater. The Chola kings of South India and the Kharavela kings of Kalinga built magnificent irrigation systems – dams, anicuts, and chain wells – many of which functioned effectively for centuries. In the arid zones of Rajasthan and Gujarat, communities built huge stone-lined water tanks in every kingdom to store seasonal rainfall.
Seed saving was another cornerstone. Farmers carefully selected and preserved indigenous seed varieties adapted to local soils and climate – a form of agricultural intelligence that modern plant breeders now actively try to recover.
The structural limitations of the traditional system
Despite its ecological wisdom, traditional farming had critical structural weaknesses. Output was low and highly unpredictable. Crop yields depended almost entirely on natural rainfall, so a bad monsoon directly meant food shortage. Traditional farming methods before independence relied on basic tools, organic manure, and local seeds, which limited the amount of food that could be produced per hectare. Without access to credit, scientific knowledge, or improved crop varieties, farmers had little ability to buffer against environmental shocks.
Two-thirds of Indian agriculture is rainfed, producing almost half of the total food output of the country, and this dependence goes back to the very roots of traditional farming. In regions without developed irrigation, entire communities were perpetually one failed monsoon away from crisis.
Land fragmentation was another chronic problem. By the late 1930s, about 40 percent of cultivators owned less than two acres per family, and a considerable section of the rural population lived on the margin of subsistence – where a slight shift in food prices was enough to cause starvation and death.
The Great Bengal Famine of 1943: when the system’s fragility was fully exposed
No single event better illustrates the vulnerability of India’s traditional, subsistence-based agricultural system than the Great Bengal Famine of 1942-43. Bengal’s economy was almost solely agrarian, but agricultural productivity was among the lowest in the world. Agricultural technology was undeveloped, access to credit was limited and expensive, and land quality and fertility had been deteriorating for decades.
The winter rice crop of 1942 was afflicted by a severe outbreak of fungal brown spot disease, while a cyclone on 16-17 October ravaged croplands, destroyed houses, and dispersed high levels of fungal spores across the region. These natural shocks compounded an already fragile agricultural base.
But the famine was not purely a production failure. According to the Indian economist Amartya Sen, who witnessed the famine as a child, it resulted from an entitlement failure – the distribution of the food supply was hindered primarily by economic factors that affected the ability of certain groups to purchase food. Wartime policies made things catastrophically worse: British authorities stockpiled food to feed defending troops and exported considerable quantities to British forces in the Middle East, while also confiscating boats and carts, depriving local people of the ability to trade and survive.
An estimated 3 million people died due to the Bengal famine of 1943. The harshest phase lasted eight months, but its consequences – starvation and epidemic disease – stretched well into 1944. The famine exposed, in the starkest possible terms, what happens when a traditional low-productivity agricultural system meets a policy environment designed to extract rather than protect.
Partition in 1947 and its impact on traditional agriculture
If 1943 exposed the fragility of traditional farming under colonial mismanagement, then 1947 compounded the crisis through a different kind of disruption: political partition. The partition of India in 1947 left India with 82% of the total population of undivided India but only 75% of the cereal production. The surplus provinces of Punjab and Sind – both with well-established canal irrigation networks – went to Pakistan, taking with them approximately one million tons of annual foodgrain supply.
Out of 70 million acres of irrigated and fertile land in the undivided country, 48 million acres remained with India while 22 million acres went to Pakistan. This was not just a loss of land – it was the loss of some of the most productive, irrigated farmland on the subcontinent, built up over decades of colonial-era investment.
The partition gave away areas that produced exportable products and food processing plants to Pakistan, creating a food deficit in India. At the time of independence in 1947, India was in the grip of a serious food crisis, accentuated by the partition. The demand for food far exceeded supply, food prices were high, and more than half of the population was living below the poverty line with inadequate purchasing power.
India was forced to import food on a significant scale. The amount of food imports reached 2.7 million tonnes in 1947, and at its peak India was importing 10 million tonnes of food, largely from the United States. This dependence on food imports continued until the mid-1960s.
From crisis to transformation: the path beyond traditional farming
The situation improved considerably after the mid-1960s, when a new agricultural development strategy and food policies were adopted. The production of staple cereals increased substantially, mainly due to productivity improvements, and the dependence on food imports decreased. This was the era of the Green Revolution – high-yielding crop varieties, chemical fertilizers, and expanded irrigation that fundamentally changed India’s agricultural output.
Yet traditional farming did not disappear. It persisted – and still persists – across large parts of India, particularly in rainfed regions, tribal areas, and small-scale subsistence communities. Agriculture accounts for approximately 20.2% of India’s GDP and supports the sustenance of rural populations while preserving indigenous crop varieties. Many of the practices that once defined traditional farming – organic inputs, seed diversity, water harvesting – are now being actively revived as tools for climate resilience and sustainable agriculture.
Ancient techniques like the use of Jiwamrita – a natural fertilizer made from cow dung, cow urine, and raw sugar – are being revived by farmers who argue they restore soil health where decades of chemical use have left the land depleted. These are not simply nostalgic practices; they represent accumulated ecological knowledge that modern agronomy is beginning to take seriously.
Despite huge population growth since the colonial era, famine deaths have been substantially eliminated in modern India due to better food distribution, buffer food stocks, rural employment generation, transportation, and groundwater-based irrigation. The contrast with the traditional farming era is stark – and it underlines just how much the evolution of agricultural systems and policy has mattered.
What the evolution of traditional farming tells us
Traditional farming in India was not primitive in the pejorative sense. It was an intricate, locally adapted system that sustained communities for thousands of years. Existing local cultivation practices emerged after centuries of experience based on trial and error, and had a sound basis for their wide acceptance. But the system’s low productivity, dependence on monsoon rains, and lack of market integration made it deeply vulnerable – to natural disasters, to policy failures, and ultimately to the enormous population pressures of the modern era.
The crises of 1943 and 1947 were not simply agricultural failures. They were moments when the structural weaknesses of a labor-intensive, low-capital farming system collided with political and economic forces beyond the control of individual farmers. Understanding this history is not just academically important – it is the foundation for understanding every major agricultural policy India has pursued since independence.
