If you keep bees – or are planning to – two of the most important tools you’ll ever develop are ones that many new beekeepers overlook entirely: a floral map and a floral calendar. These aren’t complicated instruments. A floral map shows you where nectar and pollen sources are located around your apiary, while a floral calendar tells you when those sources bloom and for how long. Together, they give you a clear, season-by-season picture of what your bees will eat, when they’ll thrive, and when they may struggle. Without them, hive management becomes reactive guesswork. With them, it becomes strategic and productive.

A floral map is a geographic record of all significant nectar and pollen-yielding plants found within the foraging range of your bee colonies. A floral calendar, as defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, is a timetable that indicates the approximate date and duration of the blossoming periods of important honey and pollen plants in a given area. Think of it as a 12-month bloom schedule – a resource guide that tells you what flowers are available for your bees at any point during the year.
These two tools work together. The map tells you where the resources are; the calendar tells you when they’re available. Used together, they allow you to plan hive management, time colony build-up before major nectar flows, anticipate dearth periods, and make data-driven decisions about supplemental feeding or colony migration.
Why every beekeeper needs these tools
Bees are entirely dependent on flowering plants for their food. Nectar provides the carbohydrates they need for energy, while pollen supplies the proteins and fats necessary for brood-rearing. As Clemson Cooperative Extension explains, the nutrition of a honey bee colony is directly tied to the plant community surrounding it – and that community changes constantly with the seasons.
The challenge is that flowering is never uniform throughout the year. There are periods of abundance – often called nectar flows – and periods of scarcity called dearth periods, when few or no plants are blooming. During dearth, colonies can weaken rapidly if the beekeeper hasn’t prepared. Understanding foraging range and carrying capacity
Before you can build an accurate floral map, you need to understand how far your bees actually travel. Foraging range varies by species. Apis mellifera (the Italian honey bee) typically covers a radius of 1 to 3 km, while Apis cerana indica (the Indian hive bee) forages within a closer range of 1 to 1.5 km. Your floral map should focus on plant species found within this radius around the apiary.

Your calendar should clearly distinguish between:
- Major nectar flow periods – months when strong, surplus-producing plants are in bloom and honey can be harvested.

- Dearth periods – when flowering largely ceases and supplemental feeding may be necessary.

For beekeepers who practice migratory beekeeping – moving colonies from one location to another as seasons and floral sources shift – a floral map and calendar are not optional. They are foundational.
As the FAO states, migratory beekeeping requires separate floral calendars for each foraging zone along the migration route. Researcher Rao noted that sunflower was once a reliable nectar source in Punjab, but newer hybrid varieties grown in the region have poor nectar content and are no longer attractive to bees. This kind of shift can go unnoticed without regular surveys – and a floral calendar built on outdated data quickly loses its value.
Clemson Cooperative Extension’s research similarly highlights how human land uses – including agriculture, forestry, and urban development – fundamentally alter what pollen and nectar sources are available to bees. Beekeepers who update their floral calendars regularly are better positioned to respond to these shifts, whether by planting supplementary bee-friendly plants, adjusting hive density, or altering migration routes.
NASA’s Honey Bee Net project takes this a step further, using satellite-derived vegetation data to map blooming periods across large geographic regions. This kind of macro-level floral mapping gives commercial beekeepers and researchers insight into forage availability at a landscape scale – a powerful complement to the ground-level surveys that individual beekeepers conduct.
Practical tips for getting started
You don’t need to wait until you have years of data to begin. Start with what’s available: regional published floral calendars (many agricultural universities and extension services publish these for their areas), observations from local beekeeping associations, and your own seasonal notes. Even a rough first-year calendar gives you a framework to refine.
A few practical guidelines:
- Survey your area at least once in each season – spring, summer, monsoon/autumn, and winter – to capture the full annual bloom cycle.
- Use a simple notebook or spreadsheet to record plant species, bloom start and end dates, and estimated flower density.
- Watch for floral fidelity – bees tend to favour specific plants when nectar and pollen quality is high, which helps you identify the most valuable species in your area.
- Update your calendar each year, especially after significant changes in land use, cropping patterns, or weather.
- Match hive numbers to floral carrying capacity. Overcrowding a location with more hives than its flora can support will reduce yield for every colony present.
Honey plants vs. pollen plants: knowing the difference
As you build your floral map, it helps to distinguish between plant types in terms of what they provide. Some species produce abundant nectar and little pollen; others are excellent pollen sources but contribute minimally to honey. The FAO notes that during colony build-up – particularly in early spring – bees need large quantities of pollen for brood-rearing, even if nectar is not yet surplus. Your calendar should therefore flag both types of resources, not just nectar flows.
Among the most valuable dual-purpose plants that provide both nectar and pollen are sunflower, mustard, safflower, litchi, and many leguminous crops. Indian research indicates that out of 87 major crops requiring pollinators, 62 offer nectar or pollen or both to honeybees – making agricultural landscapes particularly rich floral resources when managed well.
