If you’ve ever cracked open a jar of honey only to find dark, waxy bits or – worse – discovered that harvesting time meant sifting through brood-filled combs, you already know the problem a queen excluder is designed to solve. What is a queen excluder?
According to Wikipedia, a queen excluder is a selective barrier inside the beehive that allows worker bees but not the larger queens and drones to pass through. It is typically a flat sheet of perforated metal or plastic, or a wire grid mounted in a frame, with openings limited to around 4.1-4.2 mm. That precise gap is the key: worker bees are small enough to squeeze through, but the queen – with her noticeably larger thorax and plump abdomen – cannot. Drones, being bulkier males, are also blocked.
The concept has been around for well over a century. A metal queen excluder was reportedly first made in France sometime in the mid-1800s, and it has been a staple of managed beekeeping ever since. Its purpose has remained unchanged: keep the queen where she belongs – in the brood chamber – and out of the honey supers where her egg-laying would contaminate the harvest.
How does it work inside the hive?
A standard beehive is organized in layers. At the bottom are the brood boxes (also called brood chambers), where the queen lays eggs and where larvae develop. On top of these go the honey supers – shallower boxes where worker bees store surplus honey intended for harvest. The queen excluder is placed directly on top of the uppermost brood box, just below the first honey super.
The most common use of a queen excluder is to place it directly above the top brood box, so all honey supers sit above it. Worker bees move freely through the grid to pack nectar into the cells above, while the queen remains below, continuing her egg-laying in the brood area. This physical separation is simple but highly effective – when done correctly, it guarantees that no brood develops in the honey combs.
If the queen were to lay eggs in the honey supers and brood developed, it would make it nearly impossible to harvest clean honey. Larvae and cocoons left behind in comb also attract wax moths, which adds another layer of problems for hive health.
Types of queen excluders
Queen excluders are not all made the same way, and the material you choose can affect durability, ease of use, and how the bees respond. There are three main types available to beekeepers.
Metal (wire) queen excluders
Metal queen excluders are the easiest to clean and the most durable option – they won’t sag, and the smooth rounded wires allow worker bees to pass through without wing damage. Metal excluders can withstand scraping with a hive tool and even exposure to heat to melt away wax and sterilize the surface, making sanitation straightforward. They tend to be heavier and more expensive, but they last for many seasons.
Plastic queen excluders
Plastic excluders are the most affordable option and are lightweight – an advantage when managing many hives. They can also be trimmed to custom sizes and leave less space for hive beetles to hide. The downside is that plastic is prone to warping in high heat and can crack if handled too roughly during removal. In humid climates, however, the rust-proof nature of plastic is a genuine benefit.
Wood-bound metal excluders
This type combines a wooden frame around a metal wire grid. The wooden frame helps keep the excluder from bending and losing shape, which is a common issue with frameless metal versions. Many experienced beekeepers prefer this design for its structural stability and ease of placement on the hive.
Key benefits of using a queen excluder
The queen excluder’s primary job is clean honey production, but its value extends beyond just that. Here are the main reasons beekeepers choose to use one.
Brood-free honey combs
This is the core reason for the tool’s existence. An excluder keeps the queen from laying eggs in honey supers, which leaves the honeycomb wax cleaner and less attractive to wax moths, who are drawn to cocoons left behind by brood. During extraction, brood-free combs spin out cleanly, and the resulting honey is pure and uncontaminated.
Easier queen location during inspections
Containing brood in one section of the hive makes it much easier to find the queen when needed. Since you know she cannot be in the honey supers, the search is limited to the brood boxes – saving significant time and reducing stress on the colony during inspections.
Better hive organization and colony management
By physically dividing the hive into distinct zones, the queen excluder supports structured hive management. Many keepers with more than a dozen hives rely on the time-saving that excluders offer, in addition to cleaner honey. The separation also helps beekeepers track colony growth, assess brood patterns, and plan for splits or new queen introductions more accurately.
Controlling colony defensiveness
The more brood a colony has, the more worker bees, and the more defensive it can become – particularly in regions with Africanized bee genetics. Keeping the brood nest contained with a queen excluder gives beekeepers better control over colony size and temperament.
Support for queen-rearing
Queen excluders are also used with some queen breeding methods – for example, as a way to allow queen cells to be built in the same hive with an existing queen, or to house multiple queens in the same hive. A vertical excluder can be used to isolate a breeder queen on a single frame, ensuring larvae of a known age are available for grafting.
Limitations and considerations
No piece of equipment is without trade-offs, and the queen excluder has its critics. Some beekeepers refer to it, only half-jokingly, as a honey excluder – implying it can actually reduce honey yields.
The concern is real in some cases. Some colonies will refuse to work above the queen excluder, while others don’t seem to mind at all. If worker bees are reluctant to pass through the grid, less nectar gets stored in the supers, and honey production drops. The spacing between wires also varies by manufacturer, and a tighter grid can slow down worker traffic even if it doesn’t stop it.
There is also a risk of drone trapping. Drones are blocked by the excluder just as the queen is, and if they enter the hive from above the excluder, they can become stuck – creating blockages and, over time, a buildup of dead drones. Adding a top entrance above the excluder gives drones an easy exit route and helps prevent this problem.
Another critical management point: queen excluders must be removed before winter. If left in place, the queen cannot move with the winter cluster and would die from exposure. Losing a queen to winter isolation is both biologically disruptive and financially costly, since replacement queens are not always easy to introduce to an established hive.
How to use a queen excluder correctly
Proper placement and timing are what separate a useful queen excluder from one that just frustrates the colony. Here are the key practices to follow:
- Place it above the top brood box: The excluder goes directly above the brood chamber, with honey supers stacked on top. Never place it below the brood area or between two super boxes.
- Let workers draw comb first: A well-known beekeeper tip suggests letting worker bees draw out comb in the honey super for about a week before introducing the queen excluder. Once bees have invested effort into building comb above the excluder, they are far less reluctant to pass through it.
- Check for propolis buildup: Bees seal gaps with propolis and often attach burr comb to the excluder’s surface. Over time, this can clog the openings and reduce worker traffic. Inspect and clean the excluder at the start of each season.
- Remove before winter: As the nectar flow ends and the colony prepares to cluster, take out the excluder so the queen can move freely with the winter cluster and survive the cold months.
- Adjust based on your colony’s behavior: Some colonies with naturally smaller brood nests build honey readily without an excluder, while wild-caught colonies may go overboard on brood production – making an excluder essential for them. Observation matters more than any fixed rule.
Should beginners use a queen excluder?
For a new beekeeper, using a queen excluder is generally a good practice – it removes the complication of finding and relocating the queen during honey harvest, and it keeps the hive organized in a predictable way. The brood stays in the brood boxes, the honey stays in the supers, and inspections become more systematic.
That said, if the bees won’t go through the excluder and honey production suffers, it’s perfectly acceptable not to use one. Experienced beekeepers who actively monitor the queen’s position can manage her movements manually – rotating brood boxes, watching for upward movement, and intervening as needed. But for most beginners, the queen excluder is a reliable, low-cost safeguard that simplifies an already complex process.
The debate about queen excluders will likely continue among beekeepers for as long as beekeeping itself does. What is certain is that when used with care and adjusted to the specific needs of each colony, the queen excluder remains one of the most practical tools for keeping a well-organized, productive hive.
